Nobel Laureate Jody Williams meets Suu Kyi February 19, 2003
Mizzima News (www.mizzima.com) The 1997 Nobel Peace Laureate Ms. Jody Williams visited Burma this week and met Burma’s country-bound Nobel Laureate Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, according to a press statement of Nonviolence International Southeast Asia yesterday. It was the first visit to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi by another Nobel Peace Laureate since she received the award while under house arrest in 1991. Ms. Jody Williams, who received the Nobel Peace Laureate with the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, carried personal messages of support from fellow Nobel Peace laureates Rigobera Menchu Tum, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Dr. Oscar Arias, Joseph Rotblat, Norman Borlaug, Betty Williams, Mairead McGuire, to Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.

BETTY WILLIAMS In 1976, along with Mairead Maguire, Betty Williams was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her work against violence in her native Northern Ireland. Together, Williams and Mairead founded the Community of Peace People, an organization which is still involved in the betterment of life in Northern Ireland. But, as Williams herself has said many times, the Nobel Peace Prize is not awarded for what one has done but for what one will do. For more than twenty years she has traveled the world, working with fellow Nobel laureates in trouble spots throughout the world where the cause of peace, and especially the safety and well being of children, is at risk. Williams moved to the United States in 1981 and has traveled extensively throughout the country. She has been honored with the Schweitzer Medallion for Courage, the People's Peace Prize of Norway, the Martin Luther King, Jr. Award, the Eleanor Roosevelt Award, and the Frank Foundation Child Care International Oliver Award. In 1992, Governor Ann Richards of Texas appointed Williams to the Texas Commission for Children and Youth. In 1995 she was awarded the Rotary Club International "Paul Harris Fellowship." Williams currently serves as President of World Centers of Compassion for Children, Chair of The Institute for Asian Democracy in Washington, D.C., and Visiting Distinguished Scholar at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton, Florida. William's vision is to save the world's children by creating safe havens where they will be fed, sheltered, nurtured, and encouraged to grow to their fullest potential. This vision is becoming manifest through the work of

The U.S. and Europe Must Stop Arming the World's Dictators
by Betty Williams, 1976 Nobel Peace Prize Winner in the July 13, 1997 San Francisco Examiner The House of Representatives approved historic legislation last month, the "Code of Conduct on Arms Transfers." It is intended to stop the sale of deadly weapons - such as fighter planes, helicopters, tanks and M-16s - to countries ruled by undemocratic, repressive regimes. The House and Senate in conference will consider this legislation, which impacts on democratic struggles throughout the world. Rep. Tom Lantos, D-Burlingame, who spoke eloquently on behalf of the code of conduct in the International Relations Committee this year, is likely to be a key player. During the Cold War, the United States and other major Western powers too often extensively armed dictators such as Mobutu Sese Seko in Zaire and Saddam Hussein in Iraq only to see those weapons used to kill civilians and to threaten world peace. Six years after the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the time is ripe for curbing this dangerous proliferation of weapons throughout the globe.

NOBEL PRIZE WINNER BETTY WILLIAMS TO GIVE FREE OSU LECTURE By Mark Floyd, 541-737-0788
SOURCE: College of Liberal Arts, 541-737-4582 CORVALLIS - Betty Williams, who with Mairead Maguire was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1976, will deliver the 19th annual Ava Helen and Linus Pauling Memorial Lecture for World Peace at Oregon State University on May 14. Williams' talk, "Creating a Safe World for Our Children," will begin at 7 p.m. in LaSells Stewart Center. It is free and open to the public. Maguire and Williams were awarded the Nobel Prize for their efforts to ease the violence in their native Northern Ireland. Together, they founded the Community of Peace People, a still-active organization designed to improve life in Northern Ireland. Williams moved to the United States in 1981 and for the past 20 years has traveled extensively throughout the U.S. and the world. She frequently visits international "trouble spots," working with other Nobel laureates to promote peace, safety and the welfare of children. Her goal and vision, she says, is to create safe havens for the world's children, "where they will be fed, sheltered, nurtured, and encouraged to grow to their fullest potential." To help reach that goal, she founded in 1997 the World Centers of Compassion for Children, a non-profit organization she hopes will help children have a political voice under the auspices of the United Nations.
