George Hoyt Whipple was born on August 28, 1878, in Ashland, New Hampshire, U.S.A., the son of Dr. Ashley Cooper Whipple and his wife Frances Hoyt. His paternal grandfather and his father, both physicians, were born and bred in New Hampshire.
Whipple was educated at Andover Academy and then went to Yale University , where he took his A.B.degree in 1900. Subsequently he went to Johns Hopkins University , where he took his M.D. degree in 1905.
In 1905 he was appointed Assistant in Pathology at the Johns Hopkins Medical School and, although he spent a year as pathologist to the Ancon Hospital, Panama, he remained at Johns Hopkins University until 1914, being successively Assistant, Instructor, Associate and Associate Professor in Pathology.
In 1914 he was appointed Professor of Research Medicine at the University of California Medical School, and Director of the Hooper Foundation for Medical Research at that University, being Dean of the Medical School during the years 1920 and 1921. In 1921 he was appointed Professor of Pathology and Dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of Rochester
Whipple's main researches were concerned with anaemia and the physiology and pathology of the liver. For a year he worked under General William Gorgas and Dr. S. T. Darling on anaemia caused by parasitic infections and especially on the lesions found in the intestinal tract in people suffering from these infections. He also studied the histology of the tissues in patients suffering from blackwater fever.

George H. Whipple Ullstein Bilderdienst, Berlin in full GEORGE HOYT WHIPPLE (b. Aug. 28, 1878, Ashland, N.H., U.S.d. Feb. 1, 1976, Rochester, N.Y.), American pathologist whose discovery that raw liver fed to chronically bled dogs will reverse the effects of anemia led directly to successful liver treatment of pernicious anemia by the American physicians George R. Minot and William P. Murphy . This major advance in the treatment of noninfectious diseases brought the three men the Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine in 1934. After obtaining a medical degree from Johns Hopkins University (Baltimore) in 1905, Whipple began in 1908 a study of bile pigments. This led to his interest in the body's manufacture of the oxygen-carrying hemoglobin, which is also an important constituent in the production of bile pigments. In 1920 he demonstrated that liver as a dietary factor greatly enhances hemoglobin regeneration in dogs. He also carried out experiments in artificial anemia (1923-25), which established iron as the most potent inorganic factor involved in the formation of red blood cells. Whipple worked at Johns Hopkins University and then the University of California, San Francisco, before moving to the University of Rochester, where he spent most of his career (1921-55) and was first dean of the School of Medicine and Dentistry.

Obadiah Smith was a trader and storekeeper in New Hampton. His small store or trading post was in the field opposite the Lucian Schofield Home on Dana Hill. His parents lived at "Treasure Valley" (Wendleboe's). The family Cemetery is in the field near their home. Obadiah made two or three trips, annually to Portsmouth or Exeter to trade or sell goods and brought back supplies for the settlers in this area. He had a small house above the Alphonu Guyotte house on Dana Hill. Both house and store burned.
He had a store near "The Hole in the Wall" on Ashland's Main Street. In 1836 he started building the lovely brick house now the museum. One of his daughters married James Briggs who had the first Woolen Mill here. Mr. Smith helped them through financial difficulties and soon had problems of his own. The Whipple House was a Duplex house completed about 1837. His daughter married George Hoyt local contractor and Real Estate Broker. His granddaughter Francis, married Dr. Whipple, who died at an early age. Hence the name "Whipple." Ashley H. Platt, great granddaughter of Obadiah Smith married Charles Gavin Platt. The Platt family lived in the house many years. Their daughters were Frances(town librarian), Elizabeth Fletcher(deceased), and Dorothy Kelley,of Plymouth. Ashley's brother,George Hoyt Whipple, became a doctor, following in his father's profession. He practiced in California and . Finally at Syracuse (N.Y.) I FIRST MET GEORGE H. WHIPPLE in December 1938 when he interviewed me for the position of research fellow biochemist to work with him and other members of the Department of Pathology. I was impressed by his soft-spoken, taciturn manner and by his air of friendly reserve. Although I spent more than eight years in Whipple's laboratory working with him and others in many of the ongoing research problems, I came to realize that I had learned very little about Whipple personally. During department conferences or in small research meetings he stuck closely to the case discussions at hand or the research data being presented. He did not encourage wide-ranging discussion or sharp differences of opinion that might provoke controversy. However, he never discouraged a young worker from doing an experiment to test his own ideas. To learn some little about Whipple's personal life and feelings one must read the definitive biography, George Hoyt Whipple and his Friends , published in 1963 and written by George W. Corner after more than fifty years of close association and friendship. Whipple's autobiography in

His research interest concerned the formation of haemoglobin in the blood. He showed that anaemic dogs, kept under restricted diets, responded well to a liver regime, and that their haemoglobin quickly regenerated. This work led to a cure for pernicious anaemia. He shared the prize with George Minot and William Murphy. ..XTXT Whipple was born in Ashland, New Hampshire, and was educated at Yale and Johns Hopkins University before becoming a professor at the University of California, where he concentrated on his anaemia research.
