with Freedom From Religion Foundation President Anne Gaylor
Prof. Steven Weinberg prefaced his acceptance speech as the first "Emperor Has No Clothes" awardee by saying, "I enjoy being at a meeting that doesn't start with an invocation!" Weinberg addressed the audience at the 22nd annual Freedom From Religion Foundation convention in San Antonio last November on "insidious" creationist arguments, the Big Bang and its evidences, public misunderstandings of the scientific method, and his rejection of religion. Weinberg confessed he has almost envied his friends in evolutionary biology for being on the front lines fighting the creationists. "But these people in Kansas have done me the great service of attacking the standard cosmological theory, the Big Bang theory, so that we cosmologists are now in the thick of it along with our friends in evolutionary biology. I think that's simply wonderful." "Nothing," he said, "has been more important in the history of science than the work of Darwin and Wallace pointing out that not only the planets but even life could be understood in this naturalistic way." He added:

Introduction of Professor Weinberg
By Dan Barker
This introduction was delivered at the 22nd annual convention of the Freedom From Religion Foundation in San Antonio, Texas, in November, 1999. Dr. Weinberg was the first recipient of the Foundation's "Emperor Has No Clothes" Award for plain speaking on religious issues by a prominent person. I think the best way to combat superstition is with science. It happened in my life. Back when I was a traveling Christian evangelist, I was interested in the world, reading some books, branching out. I was still a believer, but fascinated with the world of knowledge out there. One of the books I read in the late '70s was The First Three Minutes by Steven Weinberg. There was a big buzz about this book. It's still in print and selling very well. The first recipient of the Foundation's "Emperor Has No Clothes Award" is Dr. Steven Weinberg. Steven Weinberg is a professor in the physics and astronomy departments at the University of Texas at Austin. He's the director of the Theory Group of the physics department there, which he founded. He's well known for his development of the field theory that unifies the electromagnetic and weak nuclear forces, and for other major contributions to physics and cosmology. He is a member of both the U.S. National Academy of Sciences and Britain's Royal Society as well as the American Philosophical Society, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, the Council on Foreign Relations, the International Astronomical Union, etc.

Steven Weinberg: Dreams of a Final Theory
Nobel-prize (physics) winner [nobel.se] Weinberg [utexas.edu] makes a nice historian, expecially in the field of physics. He describes the advancements of physicists - starting around Huxley in the late 19th century, and finishing up with recent findings (the book was published in 1992) - with a nice, personal view. However, it seems like Weinberg wrote this book to show his view about the philosophy of science, using the history of quantum physics only as a cover. Another clear task is to defend the funding of the SSC (Superconducting Super Collider), a project which was killed by the congress in 1993. Unfortunately Weinberg isn't much of a philosopher. He despises "real" philosophers, accusing them of concentrating on irrelevant details, asking wrong questions. However Weinberg himself can be accused of the same thing. It seems like he hasn't really thought of the actual subjectivity of philosophies of science. The book is well written, and I warmly recommend it to anyone interested in either basic knowledge of quantum physics or the history of its advancements.

    Dreams of a Final Theory
    Steven Weinberg
    Review date: 28/10/98
Publisher: Radius Steven Weinberg, winner of the Nobel prize in physics for his work on elementary particle theory, wrote this book while involved in the campaign by American physicists to obtain a grant for the Superconducting Super-Collider. This campaign colours the book, a lot of it being Weiberg's responses to the type of questions both physicists and non-physicists asked about the project and its aims, or an outcome of his own background thought as he marshalled his arguments for his testimony to the Congress committee involved. Because of the nature of the project, however, the book goes far beyond arguments for one particular particle accelerator. For the SSC was intended to test theories of the fundamental nature of the universe in which we live, to help physicists formulate a final theory, or "theory of everything". Thus the kind of questions which are being asked include: What do physicists mean by a final theory? What indications are there that such a theory may exist? How close are we to one? What sort of things might such a theory say? How could we tell it is indeed final? What would be the role of God in a universe governed by such a theory? The fact that in the end the battle for continued funding for the SSC was lost does not mean that this is a book only of interest in the mid-nineties. In the end, the debate was more an example to be quoted in the book and a motivation for writing it than its absolute centre; the questions it raised and Weinberg's discussion are of far wider interest.

    Facing Up
    Science and Its Cultural Adversaries
    Steven Weinberg
In 23 previously published articles and miscellaneous speeches, which span 15 years, the Nobel Prize-winning particle physicist takes up arms against a sea of post-modernists, religionists, mystics, and even some liberal critics of modern science...However, interspersed with the arguments, counterarguments, and rebuttals of adversaries are two quieter gems: a tour-de-force summary of 20th-century physics' accomplishments and a brief description of the moment of inspiration for his development of the theory unifying the weak and electromagnetic force.
Kirkus Reviews Winner of the Nobel Prize for physics in 1979, Weinberg will be well known to science buffs for his book The First Three Minutes and to a wider readership for his frequent essays in the New York Review of Books . He is one of the foremost proponents of reductionism, 'the explanation of a wide range of scientific principles in terms of simpler, more universal ones.' He has also been a major figure in the so-called science wars, arguing against writers like Derrida and Latour who question the objective character of scientific knowledge and maintain that cultural factors influence the nature of scientific discoveries...Yet he is quite adept at explaining complex concepts clearly to the general public.
