On Derek Walcott... Nobel Prize for Literature, 1992 by Annie Greet IN selecting Derek Walcott, 62-year-old West Indian poet and playwright, as this year’s recipient of the prestigious Nobel Prize for Literature, the Swedish Academy has continued to acknowledge the leading role played by writers from places once designated as being "outside the metropolis". Simultaneously, in drawing world attention to the oft-misrepresented West Indies, the Academy has been instrumental in offering access to them as reflected in the words of a master poet and dramatist. The award is also a tribute to a virile, vital Caribbean literature, the English-language multi-island tradition which consists of such powerful figures as C.L.R. James, Jean Rhys, V.S. Naipaul, Wilson Harris, Louise Bennett, George Lamming, Roger Mais, John Hearne, Olive Senior, Sam Selvon, Jamaica Kincaid...and so many others. Derek Alton Walcott was born on the island of St. Lucia, two hundred kilometres north of Trinidad. As a young man, he studied for an arts degree in Jamaica, and taught in St. Lucia, Jamaica and Grenada. His mother, a school teacher, helped finance the publishing of a small book of his poems when he was eighteen, and ten years later, in 1958, he was awarded a Rockefeller Foundation Fellowship to study theatre in the united States of America. The following year he went to Trinidad and founded the Little Carib Theatre Workshop, later the Trinidad Theatre Workshop, in Port of Spain, and between 1960 and 1968, produced regular columns on art, theatre and literature for

When the Swedish Academy awarded Derek Walcott the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1992, it cited his "poetic oeuvre of great luminosity, sustained by historical vision" and his "multicultural commitment," adding that in Walcott "West Indian culture has found its great poet." Born in 1930 in the town of Castries on the island of St. Lucia, a former British colony in the Lesser Antilles, Mr. Walcott attended the University of the West Indies, in Jamaica. In 1957, he was awarded a Rockefeller Grant to study the American theater, and he went on to found the Trinidad Theatre Workshop and to have his plays produced by the Royal Shakespeare Company, the New York Shakespeare Festival, the Mark Taper Forum in Los Angeles and the Negro Ensemble Company. His plays include Dream on Monkey Mountain The Joker of Seville O Babylon!

His breakthrough came in 1962 with the release of a collection of poems titled In a Green Light. During the last decade, Walcott completed other works, including Omeros, a 64-chapter epic that intertwines Homeric legend, classics, folklore and history released in 1990. The Bounty, his most recent work, published in 1997, is another collection of poems. Walcott, having grown up on an isolated volcanic island and ex-British colony, has been an assiduous traveler but has always felt himself deeply rooted in Caribbean society with its cultural fusion of African, Asiatic and European influences.

Derek Walcott
Biography, Themes
Walcott is perhaps the most important West Indian poet and dramatist writing in English today. He is a Nobel laureate widely known for his vivid portrayal of Caribbean culture and his inventive use of language. Derek Walcott was born in 1930 on the island of St. Lucia, West Indies, to an English father and an African mother. Trained in Greek and Roman classics by the British school system, he boldly combines “white” literary forms with “black” contemporary issues. Rebekah Presson noted, “Walcott’s plays and poems are distinguished by the tensions between the European and African/Caribbean cultures, and by the resolution of those tensions. In play after play, poem after poem—and especially in his recent epic poem Omeros —Walcott explores the burden of cultural pasts ( Omeros is itself Walcott’s Caribbean Odyssey ), and how those pasts contend within his heroic, if all-too-human, characters.” Rita Dove said that though Walcott for years taught in U.S. universities, “No matter where he finds himself, he carries his island inside.” From 1959 to 1976, Walcott directed the Trinidad Theater Workshop, which staged some of his plays.

Trouble in Paradise
Splendor and sadness in Derek Walcott's The Bounty

The Bounty
By Derek Walcott Farrar, Straus and Giroux; 80 pages; $18 Division runs like a seam through the biography of the Nobel Prize-winning Caribbean-born poet Derek Walcotthis task has been to make it more boon than burden. He and his twin brother, Roderick, were born in 1930 in St. Lucia, a small link in the Antilles island chain, then part of the British West Indies. Walcott's was a British education. The paucity of books in his native St. Lucia led, paradoxically, to an excellent literary education grounded in the heavily accented rhythms of Shakespeare, the Anglican hymnal, and the King James Bible. Even as he pursued a college education, Walcott absorbed the parallel oral culture of the Caribbean, particularly audible in his plays, some of which adopt his native Creole dialect. His early poems register both geographical distances and the divisions within himself. In Crusoe's Island (1965), he is both Robinson Crusoe and "Friday's progeny,/ The brood of Crusoe's slave." His more recent poetry, especially the epic

Walcott has been an assiduous traveller to other countries but has always, not least in his efforts to create an indigenous drama, felt himself deeply-rooted in Caribbean society with its cultural fusion of African, Asiatic and European elements. For many years, he has divided his time between Trinidad, where he has his home as a writer, and Boston University, where he teaches literature and creative writing.
