Philip W. Anderson is an Emeritus Professor of Physics at Princeton University and a Nobel Laureate. He received his B.S. and Ph.D. from Harvard University in 1943 and 1949, respectively. After completing his studies, Dr. Anderson began a long career with Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, New Jersey (1949-84). In 1967-75, he held a permanent "Visiting Professorship" for two terms out of three at the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University, and was named a Fellow of Jesus College. In 1975, he replaced this position with a half-time appointment as the Joseph Henry Professor of Physics at Princeton University. Following his retirement from Bell Labs in 1984, he began working full time at Princeton. In 1985, Dr. Anderson became involved with the newly established Santa Fe Institute (SFI), where he is currently a member of the Science Board. He was also the George Eastman Professor of Physics at Oxford University in 1993-94.
Dr. Anderson received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1977, together with Sir Nevill F. Mott and Dr. John H. van Vleck, "for their fundamental theoretical investigations of the electronic structure of magnetic and disordered systems." Other awards and honours have included: the Dannie Heinemann Prize (1975), the Guthrie Medal and Prize (1978), the National Medal of Science (1983), the John Bardeen Prize (1997), and numerous honorary degrees and memberships in foreign science academies. He is the author of five books and over 450 research papers.

John H. van Vleck
John Hasbrouck Van Vleck, 1899–1980, American Physicist, born in Middletown, Connecticut, USA. Educated entirely in the USA, he taught at Harvard (1922-23) and the University of Minnesota (1923-28), where, in 1926, he expanded English physicist Paul Dirac's quantum mechanics to explain the electric and magnetic properties of atoms. His classical treatise, The Theory of Electric and Magnetic Susceptibilities (1932), published while he was teaching at the University of Wisconsin (1928-34), earned Van Vleck the title "father of modern magnetism". He promoted the union of physics and chemistry, applying his discoveries to chemical bonding in crystals. Returning to Harvard (1934-69), he used his theory in studies of nuclear magnetic resonance and in the development of computer memory systems. He shared the 1977 Nobel Prize in physics (with Philip Anderson and Nevill Mott) for his pioneering research. His colleagues knew him as a patient, gentle man whose personal interests included collecting detailed information of US and European railroad timetables.

Share your thoughts In the Forum Related Resources J. Robert Oppenheimer Albert Einstein FDR Elsewhere on the Web Vannevar Bush Enrico Fermi Oppenheimer's gathering resembled in microcosm the massive organization of scientific genius that he directed at the laboratory a year later. While different Berkeley attendees would be assigned specific problems or tasks, they also enjoyed a freewheeling exchange of thought and debate. Barriers to communication were anathema to Oppenheimer and his contemporaries. They believed passionately in the uninterrupted flow of ideas and information among individuals and institutions as well as nations. That tenet had been one of the prime reasons for the dramatic advancement of modern physics. It also accounted for the reason the luminaries feared Heisenberg and his colleagues in Germany. They knew what Heisenberg knew.

Chemistry 1976

Research on the structure of boranes, which has increased the understanding of chemical bonding Lipscomb had had quite a bit of experience by the time he elucidated the unusual chemical make-up of boron - off to college in 1937, he donated his elaborate chemistry set to his high school, doubling the school's chemistry inventory. The scientist, known for his clarinet playing and Western-style bow ties, describes his mode of reasoning: "I am inclined to make large intuitive jumps and then set about to test the conclusions." Lipscomb is the Abbott and James Lawrence Professor of Chemistry Emeritus. John H. Van Vleck 1899-1980
Physics 1977

Pioneered the application of quantum mechanics to the study of magnetism Van Vleck, known for his love of the arts, his quietly piercing wit, and his intense loyalty to Harvard, made cutting-edge contributions to the fields of radioastronomy, microwave spectroscopy, and magnetic resonance. His application of quantum mechanics altered both physics and chemistry, deepening our understanding of atomic systems - from single molecules to crystalline solids. Sheldon L. Glashow 1932-
