Secretary-General Kofi Annan and the organization of 189 nations which he heads jointly accepted the 100th Nobel Peace Prize Monday in Oslo, Norway. During the December 10 awards ceremony, the Nobel committee called the award the renowned medal, plus 10 million Swedish crowns ($953,000) a special endorsement of Annan's and the United Nations' efforts to create a better-organized and more peaceful world. The prize, the centenary of the annual award, underscores the belief that "the only negotiable route to global peace and cooperation goes by the way of the United Nations," the committee said in a written statement. Annan was joined on stage by South Korean Foreign Minister Han Seung-soo, president of the U.N. General Assembly, who accepted the award on behalf of the organization. More than 20 peace laureates from previous years, including East Timorese freedom fighter Jose Ramos-Horta and South Africa's Desmond Tutu, also gathered on stage for the ceremony at Oslo City Hall. Staff The Norwegian Nobel Committee Press release The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided to award the Nobel Peace Prize for 2001, in two equal portions, to the United Nations (U.N.) and to its Secretary-General, Kofi Annan , for their work for a better organized and more peaceful world. For one hundred years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to strengthen organized cooperation between states. The end of the cold war has at last made it possible for the U.N. to perform more fully the part it was originally intended to play. Today the organization is at the forefront of efforts to achieve peace and security in the world, and of the international mobilization aimed at meeting the world's economic, social and environmental challenges. Kofi Annan has devoted almost his entire working life to the U.N. As Secretary-General, he has been pre-eminent in bringing new life to the organization. While clearly underlining the U.N.'s traditional responsibility for peace and security, he has also emphasized its obligations with regard to human rights. He has risen to such new challenges as HIV/AIDS and international terrorism, and brought about more efficient utilization of the U.N.'s modest resources. In an organization that can hardly become more than its members permit, he has made clear that sovereignty can not be a shield behind which member states conceal their violations.

By Pedro B. Bernaldez While the war against terrorism is raging in Afghanistan and the globe seems to be divided into two camps: one pro, the other con, one needs to ponder the question on what role has the United Nations to do in this conundrum. It is academic, however, that the United Nations is less powerful than the superpower United States which is orchestrating the coalition, backed by a major power Great Britain, with the support of other major powers who are in the UN Security Council. The United Nations is acting on the background by pursuing more relevant actions in the humanitarian field. This limited but significant intervention by the United Nations is in keeping with the mandate as well as the limitations imposed on it by the very nature of its existence. The United Nations was created to address the concerns of the whole world community through a body representing the member nations. For more than fifty years, the United Nations has attempted to deal with the whole gamut of issues affecting the peace and security of peoples and nations. However, the organization has had to contend with certain limitations due to the institutional and programmatic shortcomings. Thus, the organization is under scrutiny. Reforming the United Nations will make it the only body that will be capable of enforcing systems and procedures of global governance.

His extensive experience in multilateral affairs includes two terms as president of the United Nations Security Council (2000-01), where he headed the council's first-ever missions to Kosovo and Belgrade. Chowdhury's other prominent leadership roles included service as president of the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) Executive Board, vice-president of the U.N. Economic and Social Council and chair of the Fifth (Administrative and Budgetary) Committee, U.N. General Assembly. Chowdhury also led the United Nations' groundbreaking initiative on culture of peace, chairing the nine-month-long negotiations that produced the landmark document "Declaration and Programme of Action on a Culture of Peace," adopted by the U.N. General Assembly in 1999. Subsequently, he guided efforts resulting in the declaration of the "International Decade for the Culture of Peace and Non-violence for the Children of the World (2001-10). Nobel Peace Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes bequested by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel . Four of the five prizes are awarded in Stockholm each year, but Nobel had stipulated in his will that the Peace Prize could not be awarded in Sweden. Instead the Norwegian capital of Oslo was chosen as the award site and a Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is appointed to select the laureate for the Peace Prize. According to the will of Alfred Nobel the prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

B'nai B'rith Criticizes U.N. Nobel Peace Prize award FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Contact: Eric Rozenman
Washington, D.C. (October 16, 2001) – "The United Nations did not deserve to win the Nobel Peace Prize this year. The decision to honor it for what it failed to do tarnishes the reputation of the Nobel committee and the award itself," B’nai B’rith International President Richard D. Heideman and Executive Vice President Daniel S. Mariaschin said today. The annual peace prize award –which went to both the U.N. and its secretary general, Kofi Annan – was announced last week. Heideman and Mariaschin said that while "Annan himself has worked with goodwill to advance the U.N.’s general agenda, the organization’s actions on matters pertaining to the Jewish people ought to have disqualified it from consideration." When it comes to fighting antisemitism, anti-Zionism, and supporting a beleaguered member state – Israel – against its enemies, "the United Nations has failed utterly," Heideman and Mariaschin stated. "Recently, U.N. officials were forced to acknowledge that their troops in southern Lebanon at the least hid evidence of Hezbollah terrorists kidnapping Israeli soldiers, if they were not complicit in the crime. This alone should have ruled out consideration of the United Nations for the peace prize." In addition, "tolerance by senior U.N. officials, including High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson, for the antisemitic, anti-Israel hate festival at Durban last month should also have disqualified the organization from receiving the peace prize," the B’nai B’rith leaders said. "The U.N. World Conference Against Racism was hijacked by radical Arab-Islamic representatives.

FROM Update Winter 2001 / Spring 2002 100th YEAR CELEBRATION OF THE U.N. It is a sincere pleasure to enclose the following tribute to the winners of the current Nobel Peace Prize which was awarded December 10 th in Oslo, Norway. According to Dr. Geir Lundestad, the Director of the Norwegian Nobel Institute, Dr. Irwin Abrams is an outstanding scholar and historian specializing in History about the Nobel Peace Prizes over the last 100 years. Abram’s new book, “The Nobel Peace Prize and the Laureates”, is a precious resource for any Peace Site School or other organization interested in the history of the Nobel Peace Prize. If possible, it should be included in every school Peace Site Resource Center as a reference. THE PROMISE OF THE UNITED NATIONS by Dr. Irwin Abrams Member of World Citizen’s Advisory Board This is the one hundredth year of the Nobel Peace Prize, and the Norwegian Nobel Committee announced on October 12 that it wanted “in its centenary year to proclaim that the only negotiable route to global peace and cooperation goes by way of the United Nations”. Accordingly, the prize of 2001 is to be shared by the United Nations and its Secretary General, Kofi Annan “for their work for a better and more peaceful world”. The committee explained that the end of the cold war had at last made it possible for the United Nations to do what its organizers had planned for it to do, and that Kofi Annan had been “pre-eminent in bringing new life to the organization”. . .
