Desmond Tutu By Nina Schulte Desmond Mpilo Tutu was a very strong man throughout his tough times. Many black South Africans loved him for his courageous work and many hated him for how he gave blacks their rights. Desmond Tutu is a well educated and life loving man. He pulled through for what many South Africans thought would never happen. Growing up in South Africa where segregation was a big part of society Desmond had to learn to step above and become a strong man. (Bently 12) Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born on October 7 th , 1931 in a town named Klerksdorp in tranasvaal South Africa. (Internet 1) Desmond had always grown up along the outside parts of towns and cities along the rand with his mother, father & three sisters. (Bently 21) When Desmond was born he was what many call a weakling. His Family did not think he would be able to live in such a weak condition. His grandmother gave him the middle name of Mpilo, which in Bantu means "life". (Green 10) A let known fact that Tutu did live, and while growing up a strong life. Desmond Tutu lived with both his parents. Tutu's father, " Zachariah", was from the Xhosa tribe. His Xhosa tribal influences stayed with him for he was a fierce imposing man. (Bently12) As opposed to Desmond's mother "Aletta", who was from the Tswana tribe which had a more peaceful reputation. (Bently 12) Her compassionate nature was given to Desmond as well as short height and a stalky nose. Aletta and Zachariah were both an unusual match for their characteristics were completely opposite. Desmond had other additions to

Desmond Tutu - A Man with a Mission by Lindsay Miller Archbishop Desmond Tutu today stands as one of the most respected and influential men in South Africa, after having devoted much of his adult life fighting and defeating apartheid. However, Desmond Tutu was not always loved and respected. In fact, according to Nelson Mandela, this "outstanding patriot" was for years considered "public enemy number one" by the South African government (Tutu xi). Taking a close look at Desmond’s past, it is apparent that the church has affected every aspect of his life. Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born on October 7, 1931 in the city of Klerksdorp (Baker, par.1). His name, Desmond stands for "courageous" (Bentley 14). Although his parents did not know it at the time, this name was perfect for their son. Desmond’s father, Zacharaih Tutu was an extremely strict and dominating man. His mother, Aletta, however was gentle and a peacemaker (Bentley 12). Her teachings had a significant influence on Desmond’s political and religious behavior. Desmond was the middle child with an older and younger sister (Bentley 15) Desmond began school at the age of seven. There were few education centers for South African black youths and those that existed were started by churches and required tuition (Bentley 19). Desmond attended Western High School (Moritz 419). In 1951, Desmond decided to go to Bantu Normal College to become a teacher (Tutu xiii; "Desmond" par.1). This was Desmond’s second choice, for he had hoped to study medicine but could not afford it (Baker, par.7). While at college, Desmond met Nomalizo Leah Shenxane (Bentley 35). In 1954, Desmond began teaching at Madibane High School. Leah, who was also a teacher, and Desmond were married the following year (Bentley 36).

"My vision is of a South Africa that is totally non-racial...a new South Africa,
a free South Africa, where all of us, black and white together, will walk tall; where all of us, black and white together, will hold hands as we stride forth
on the Freedom March to usher in the new South Africa where people will matter because they are human beings made in the image of God."
    Desmond Tutu
Archbishop Desmond Tutu has been described as "one of South Africa's most articulate Christians." He gained notoriety for his blatant opposition to the South African government's apartheid system. Much of his life has been spent fighting for justice and racial harmony in South Africa and throughout the world. Highly educated, very articulate, and extremely spiritual, Mpilo Desmond Tutu has become a figure of peace in a world shattered and torn by the disillusionment of hatred and violence. Born October 7, 1931 in Klerksdorp, a town in the Western Transvaal, 70 miles west of Johannesburg, Tutu grew up "in a country where legality and morality are compromised by institutionalized racism."

EGYPTIAN COPT LEADER WINNER OF UNESCO-MADANJEET SINGH PRIZE FOR TOLERANCE AND NON-VIOLENCE The jury is composed of five members: Nasser El-Ansary, Director-General of the Paris-based Institut du Monde Arabe Ms Boni explained the choice of the jury saying: "Pope Shenouda is a religious personality whose work has been devoted to the promotion of tolerance. We feel that religion is an area where tolerance must be particularly encouraged because it is often in religion that it is particularly lacking". Pope Shenouda III's commitment to peace and tolerance is expressed through his sermons, books and official Church bulletins. He has established a relationship of trust with Muslims and has also worked to facilitate international dialogue between religions and plays an active role in easing inter-religious tensions as they arise in Egypt. The jury also decided to attribute two Honourable Mentions . One to Indonesian human rights activist Munir, founder of the Commission for Disappearences and Victims of Violence (KONTRAS) which co-ordinates a network of non-governmental organisations and associations concerned with state-organised violence and local conflicts. Munir is also a member of Simpati, an organisation which fights discrimination against the Chinese community of Indonesia.

Posted to the web November 5, 2001 Washington, DC Last month, Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu turned 70, triggering a flood of congratulations from around the globe. The son of a schoolteacher and a domestic worker, he joined the priesthood only after starting life as a teacher. In 1976, in the wake of the uprising by young black South Africans, Tutu was appointed General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches (SACC) and became a nationally and internationally known campaigner against apartheid, eventually being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1984. In 1985, he was elected Bishop of Johannesburg and a year later, Archbishop of Cape Town, where he was a thorn in the side of the National Party regime in Pretoria and a powerful advocate for change. It finally came in 1990 when President F.W. De Klerk unbanned the ANC and the Communist Party and opened the way to negotiations about a transfer of political power.

South African Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu speaks to a capacity crowd in Gaston Hall Thursday. South African Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu stressed the importance of interfaith cooperation rather than retribution in response to the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, relating the situation to his nation’s triumph over apartheid in a speech Thursday in Gaston Hall. After a moment of silence to commemorate the victims of the attacks and a c
ongratulatory remark to newly inaugurated University President John J. DeGioia, Tutu expressed how honored he was to be part of Georgetown’s 2001 Oliver Tambo lecture series, as Tambo had made a “quiet but oh-so-tearing contribution and influence” to the alleviation of apartheid. Tutu concentrated on lessons to be learned after Sept. 11, saying that there is “no future without forgiveness.”

Bishop Desmond Tutu was born in 1931 in Klerksdorp, Transvaal. His father was a teacher, and he himself was educated at Johannesburg Bantu High School. After leaving school he trained first as a teacher at Pretoria Bantu Normal College and in 1954 he graduated from the University of South Africa . After three years as a high school teacher he began to study theology, being ordained as a priest in 1960. The years 1962-66 were devoted to further theological study in England leading up to a Master of Theology. From 1967 to 1972 he taught theology in South Africa before returning to England for three years as the assistant director of a theological institute in London. In 1975 he was appointed Dean of St. Mary's Cathedral in Johannesburg, the first black to hold that position. From 1976 to 1978 he was Bishop of Lesotho, and in 1978 became the first black General Secretary of the South African Council of Churches. Tutu is an honorary doctor of a number of leading universities in the USA, Britain and Germany.
Desmond Tutu has formulated his objective as "a democratic and just society without racial divisions", and has set forward the following points as minimum demands:
