Archbishop Desmond Tutu www.csuchico.edu/.../archive/ 99_09_30/s7.desmondtutu.jpg Part 1: Activist Information Archbishop Desmond Mpilo Tutu was one of the greatest civil rights activists fighting against the South African apartheid. His civil disobedience, risk taking, struggling, and hard work helped to change the lives of South Africans today. Born in 1931, Desmond Tutu was the third of four children in his family. His parents were Zachariah, the headmaster of Methodist Primary School, and Althea, a domestic servant. Desmond, as well as his siblings were all giving a mixture of European and African names, as was the normal custom among Christian South Africans. Tutu described his childhood as happy, but later he pointed out that the racial discrimination he and his fellow black had been receiving was a kind of brainwashing that got them to hate themselves and believe that whites were superior. When Tutu was 12 his family moved to Krugersdorp and his family joined the Anglican Church. This influenced Tutu greatly because he is a very religious man and his religious beliefs helped guide him through his life. Desmond had to drop out of high school at 14 because he had been sick with tuberculosis and was hospitalized for 20 months. While sick he met and Anglican priest who would inspire, as well as befriend, Tutu. Father Trevor Huddleston visited Tutu many times while he was in the hospital. He would bring Desmond books and they would talk. Tutu's friendship with Huddleston helped Tutu along his way to becoming an Archbishop and a civil rights activist. When Tutu was ready to go to college there was much racial discrimination and tension. Many laws that were unfavorable by blacks, such as no mixed marriages and blacks and whites living separately, had been passed. Despite these discriminatory laws Tutu worked and eventually graduated from Bantu Normal College in 1954. In 1955 Tutu married Leah Shenxane and had 4 children throughout their marriage.

Hundreds of Protestants, separated from the children by a tight cordon of police in full riot gear, blew whistles and horns and turned their backs to make clear the girls were not welcome in the Protestant street leading to the front gate of their Catholic school. But there was no repeat of the hurling of the pipe bomb or of the rock and stone throwing which erupted on Wednesday as the girls, some as young as four, walked with their parents to school behind the police lines. Protestant leaders said they were pleased there was no violence on Thursday, after images of weeping and terrified schoolgirls shocked the world. Guest:

PEACEMAKERS: Armed with the Mighty Waters of Nonviolence Martin Luther King, Jr. was often asked by journalists why he believed violence and hatred could really, truly, seriously, be overcome with nonviolence. "Because you can’t fight fire with fire," he just as often replied. "You have to fight fire with water." To Dr. King, the waters of nonviolence were made of love, patience, forgiveness, faith, unity, and reasonable compromise. They were the lifewaters of Jesus and Gandhi, the essence of humane reason – and no matter how discouraged he may have felt at times, he never lost faith in these powerful waters. The members of the panel of Global Citizens Circle’s first Southern Circle – all of whom are members of the Circle’s International Advisory Board – are extraordinary peacemakers armed with the mighty waters of nonviolence. As they, and we, consider the tinderbox of world events and discuss "HOW DO WE CREATE TRUE RECONCILIATION?" we have before us the example of their efforts and often miraculous results as a guide for future action. Desmond Mpilo Tutu a man of immense moral authority who has been one of the leading figures in the fight against apartheid in South Africa. This presentation will be divided in three main parts : His life and the environment in which he grew up, His actions and finally his legacy. I. Who is Desmond Tutu? Desmond Tutu was born on October 7 1931 in Klerksdorp, South Africa. His father was a teacher in a mission school. His family, like most of the black families in South Africa at that time, had little money and lived in a small shack where there was no electricity or sanitation. South Africa was, at that time, a land of great injustices and racial segregation. But at his early age, Desmond Tutu saw that not all whites were cruel. When he turned 14, he caught tuberculosis and almost died While he was in the hospital, a white priest came to see and talked to him every day That inspired him to a lifelong devotion to Christianity. In 1948 an election was held. Only the whites were able to vote. The National party, who was openly racist, won the election. It was the beginning of apartheid, a policy of discrimination and apart-hood between whites and blacks. The new party wasted no time in enacting new laws that made racial prejudice, segregation, and oppression the central focus of government policy. He married Leah Nomalisso in 1955.

"HUMAN LIFE IS SACRED"
An Appeal to Restraint and a Call to Action in a Moment of Crisis by eight Nobel Peace Prize Laureates We are greatly saddened by the tragic events which took place on Tuesday, September 11th , in New York and Washington, D.C. We cannot yet fathom the magnitude of what has happened, and yet we feel impelled to speak in light of what we fear may be an escalation of violence in response. We extend our deepest sympathies and heart_felt condolences to the families and friends of the victims and to the people of the United States. Our prayers accompany you in this difficult period of loss and mourning. The many acts of courage on the part of the rescue teams and the generosity of the citizens of your cities and towns are an inspiration to all of us. Respect for the sacredness and inviolability of human life is a principal article of faith in each of the major world religions. We are heartened by the spontaneous expressions of solidarity by millions of men and women of good will, from all backgrounds, on every continent, and by so many religious and political leaders through the world who have spoken out against this barbarous act of terrorism. There is nothing which can condone an act which has cost the lives of thousands of innocent people. The perpetrators of this deed must be sought out and brought to justice. At the same time, we know that administering justice to those responsible will not resolve the deeper questions of the causes of terrorism. In this regard, we are mindful that every day innocent victims suffer and die in many parts of the world, their only crime being born in a particular place, or into a particular religion, or with a certain skin colour.

Examples The life and work of Desmond Tutu Desmond Mpilo Tutu was born on 7th of October 1931 in Klerksdorf, a gold-mining town 120 miles to the west of Johannesburg. He moved with his family to Johannesburg at the age of twelve and earned money selling peanuts at bus stops and caddying at golf clubs.
Desmond Tutu wanted to become a doctor but his family did not have the means for him to realize his dream and so he followed his father's footsteps and became a teacher. Hardly had he begun his career as teacher than the South African government introduced laws aimed at providing black pupils a poorer education than their white counterparts. Tutu wanted his pupils to become free and independent adults who could think and make decisions on their own, yet now he was expected to limit intentionally their knowledge. This he found impossible to go along with and decided to become a priest. Bishop Tutu spoke in the name of all of South Africa's churches against the apartheid system, which discriminated against races and violated human rights. Apartheid was introduced into South Africa by the National Party in 1948 in order to ensure that the minority made up of 4.5 million whites could rule over 23 million blacks. You will find background information on the apartheid system in South Africa as part of the Human Rights Main Subject Group under the heading of

Desiree Blankenberg's Address Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. It is indeed my sincere pleasure, not only as an African citizen but also as a student of the University of Alberta - and I say it with great pride - to present to you today a reflection on the life of Archbishop Desmond Tutu, a man that brought about freedom for me, and people like me. Something I never had as a child, but I do now. There was a time when Desmond Tutu was regarded as a turbulent priest, feared and disliked by the racist apartheid government who saw his liberation stance as threatening, destructive, and even unchristian. Ironically today, Mpilo Desmond Tutu has become the spiritual architect of a new understanding we as South Africans seek of each other in our beloved country. Desmond Tutu was born in the heartland of racist South Africa. His rise from birth and childhood in a barren black township of South Africa to a Nobel laureate was against all odds. Mpilo, his African name, means life.
