It is a Constitutional Democratic Republic and its current president is Alvaro Arzu Irigoyen. From the mid-19th century and through the mid 1980s, the country was ruled by a series of dictatorships, often opposed by various guerilla groups. Guatemala's first democratic elections were held on July 1st, 1984. The majority of the people in Guatemala are descendants of Mayan Indians. The most widely practiced religion is Roman Catholicism, however Protestantism and traditional Mayan religions are practiced as well "by an estimated 30% of the population." Although the majority of the people of Guatemala are indigenous, Spanish is the official language and is not necessarily understood by the indigenous population.

LA JUNTA — Students enrolled in Peace Studies, a new course offered this spring at Otero Junior College, had the opportunity to attend a two-day conference at Regis University this month where they met Rigoberta Menchu Tum, the 1992 Nobel Peace Laureate.
Peace Studies is a relatively new interdisciplinary field on many college campuses. The course reflects the content areas of psychology, sociology, government and economics within three arenas: intrapersonal and interpersonal relationships; community relationships; and global relationships. Within these three arenas, Peace Studies explores techniques for managed-conflict and how it results in positive, creative solutions rather than negative consequences. During their two days at the Peace Studies conference, OJC students took various workshops such as Does Your Conflict Have a Color, Team Building- A Foundation for Peaceful Communities, and Conflict and Leadership.

Press Release Archives Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu Tum lectures at UI Nov. 12
IOWA CITY, Iowa 1992 Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchu Tum, who distinguished herself as a human rights advocate for Guatemala's indigenous peoples, will present a lecture, "The Universal Declaration and Human Rights," at 8 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 12 at Macbride Hall Auditorium at the University of Iowa. Menchu was labeled a communist and several attempts on her life and her associates' lives were made by Guatemalan authorities when she began working through the Committee of Peasant Unity and speaking on behalf of her people nearly two decades ago. Menchu used political tactics and social work to lessen discrimination against Guatemalans of non-Spanish descent who were denied citizenship by the military-led government the same government that killed her brother, father and mother. Menchu's brother Petrocinio, was kidnapped and burned by military soldiers in 1979 while the family watched. In 1980, Menchu's father, Vincente, was among 39 Indian leaders who died in a fire at Guatemala's Spanish embassy while protesting human rights violations. In a separate incident, her mother, Juana, also a human rights advocate, was raped, tortured and killed one year later.

For the first time, the Assembly of First Nations of Canada and the National Congress of American Indians of the United States held a joint meeting in Vancouver in honor of Tecumseh's vision. During the historical July 21-23 conference, both organizations passed unanimous resolutions calling for the release of Leonard Peltier, a strong show of Native Nation's support. On November 12, 1999 both organizations met with Janet Reno's office and made a strong plea for clemency for Leonard Peltier. On January 18, 2000 the National Chief of the AFN, Phil Fontaine, his delegation, and Ernie Stevens of the NCAI met with Leonard Peltier in prison to strategize for his release. By Pat Omandam Star-Bulletin If Hawaiians gain political status from the federal government, they must continue to fight to see that the recognition as an indigenous people is fulfilled, says indigenous rights expert Rigoberta Menchu Tum of Guatemala, a 1992 Nobel Peace Prize winner. "In other parts, indigenous peoples have been able to achieve accords and treaties, and many times these treaties and these agreements are not respected," Tum said. "Therefore, our brothers continue to struggle so that these treaties and agreements are fulfilled." Tum, 41, is in Hawaii for a series of speaking events and to serve as a good-will ambassador of peace for the United Nations Education, Scientific and Culture Organization. Tum, who is Mayan, has been working to bring international attention to the plight of Guatemala's indigenous people for nearly two decades. She is a member of the Quiche, one of 22 groups of the Mayan, who constitute 60 percent of Guatemala's population.

Nobel Deception Despite making false claims in her book,
staple of the curriculum at UNC.
By Matt Roberson
Staff Writer of The Carolina Review
In 1992, Rigoberta Menchu Tum received the Nobel Peace Prize for her work as an activist for Indian rights in Guatemala as well as other parts of Latin America. The Nobel Committee awarded the prize on the basis of her biography I, Rigoberta Menchu I, Rigoberta Menchu . The Story of All Poor Guatemalans, called into question the legitimacy of her report, controversy has swirled across the nation’s campuses over the use of the book as historical fact. In her biography, she describes tales of brutality and deprivation, however Stoll claims that her book "cannot be the eyewitness account that it purports to be," for she describes "experiences she never had herself." Despite these findings, which were confirmed by a New York Times investigation, many professors continue to hold the book as sacred text for the multicultural curriculum. Though no one can deny her work in advancing the rights of sectors of indigenous population, the novel presents several contradictory statements and reveals her advocacy of violence. From this, one must question the Nobel committee’s standards for selection as well as the motives of professors who continue to teach biography. Throughout her novel, she speaks of violence, exploitation, hardship, and repression with such vividness that her book transformed her into a champion human rights campaigner for the people of Latin America.

Nobel Peace Prize, Goodwill Ambassador for the Culture of Peace
Posted at globalresearch.ca 26 September 2001
To Mr. George W. Bush
President of the United States of America
Washington DC, USA. Your Excellency, Mr. President: In the first place, I want to reiterate to you the solidarity and condolences I expressed to all your people on Tues. Sept. 11 when I became aware of the painful occurrences that had taken place in your country, as well as to share my indignation and condemnation of the threats these acts of terrorism constitute. In recent days I have been following the evolution of events, using my best efforts so that the response to them would be reflection, not obsession; prudence, not rage; and the pursuit of justice, not revenge. I invoked the consciousness of the world's peoples, the communications media, the eminent personalities with whom I share an ethical commitment to peace, the heads of state and leaders of international bodies, in order that prudence illuminate our acts. Nevertheless, Mr. President, upon listening to the message you gave to the Congress of your country, I have been unable to overcome a sensation of fear for what may come of your words. You call upon your people to prepare for "a lengthy campaign, unlike any other we have ever seen" and for your soldiers to save their honour by marching to a war in which you intend to involve all of us, the peoples of the world.

Al Sr. D. George W. Bush
Presidente de los Estados Unidos de Amèrica
Washington, D.C. E.U.A.
