Nobel Prize
A chairde, It must not be too grand an honour to win the Nobel Peace Prize when people such as David Trimble are recipients. In northeastern Ireland today, there is still sectarian violence and more atrocities to come, because peace does not exist until there is freedom and equality for all. There is no peace, and Trimble played nothing of a viable role in encouraging peace. The Oslo Nobel judges have disgraced themselves and the Nobel Prize by giving it to Trimble. Perhaps next year they will follow the same ridiculous ideology as this year, and give it to David Duke of the Ku Klux Klan for not lynching anyone this year. What a pathetic prize it is. Seamus Fogarty, Patrick Riordan
Saint Louis, Missouri
A chairde, One has to wonder why the Norwegian parliamentary committee responsible for the award of the Nobel Prize for Peace chose to name the Orange Order sectarian activist David Trimble as a co-recipient of this prestigious award with John Hume. Trimble represents the visceral hatred that Orangeism holds for Roman Catholics in British-occupied Ireland. He has repeatedly upheld the ``right'' of the Orange Order to march through Catholic areas in order that Catholics may be reminded of their ``inferior'' political, if not biological, status within the prevailing social order.

Time for Trimble to show leadership
BY SEAN BRADY The most significant development in the deepening political crisis this week was David Trimble's pronouncement that he would attempt to move ahead in the political process without Sinn Fein. Trimble's threat followed his meeting with British Premier Tony Blair at Downing Street on Monday. Sinn Fein's Chief Negotiator Martin McGuinness met Tony Blair the same day. Afterwards he rejected Trimble's threat as the redundant language of pre-Good Friday unionism. Martin McGuiness said: ``David Trimble cannot move on without Sinn Fein or any other party to the Agreement. Nor can the two governments allow him to stall the full implementation of the Agreement in order to placate the rejectionists in his party any longer. ``He should resolve to face down the rump within his party which is intent on maintaining the politics of pre-Good Friday Unionism. He must tell them that they have had their day. A new dawn is breaking in politics on this island and no-one will be able to postpone it indefinitely. ``David Trimble must stand up to those in the Ulster Unionist Party who are attempting to wreck the Good Friday Agreement. He should impress on them that the peace process is unstoppable. That the peace process train is moving and gaining momentum and those not on board by 31 October are the only ones who can be left behind.

Nobel Peace Prize Winners still not satisfied (16-12-98)
John Hume from the SDLP and David Trimble from the Ulster Unionists, the two Nobel laureates, cannot be satisfied with the present situation in Northern Ireland.
Although violence has come to a halt, and England is complying with its promise to release or transfer IRA prisoners from British prisons to prisons in the Irish Republic, David Trimble raised pressure on the IRA to disarm. He said in Oslo, 'I have not insisted on precise dates, quantities and manner of decommissioning. All I have asked for is a credible beginning... That is not too much to ask for.'
In the Peace Prize ceremony of December 10 Trimble optimistically expressed hopes, however, by saying that the mountain of 'historical sectarianism' has been crossed.
But there seems to be a long way to the valley of peace....

Ulster leaders share Nobel for Belfast accord
By Shawn Pogatchnik, Associated Press writer
BELFAST, Northern Ireland John Hume and David Trimble, joint winners of this year's Nobel Peace Prize, have traveled dramatically different roads as brokers of the historic Northern Ireland accord.
For Hume, 61, the single-minded peacemaker who leads the province's major Catholic party, yesterday's honor from the Norwegian Nobel Committee caps a remarkable career that culminated in an agreement he envisioned decades ago.
For Trimble, 54, embattled chief of the Protestant party pivotal to the peacemaking efforts, the Nobel was more controversial particularly considering the omission of his nemesis, Gerry Adams, leader of the IRA-allied Sinn Fein party.
The Oslo Nobel judges previously have used their award to encourage progress in peacemaking most notably in the Middle East, where Israel's Menachim Begin and Egypt's Anwar Sadat shared honors in 1978, and when Palestine Liberation Organization chief Yasser Arafat joined Israel's Yitzhak Rabin and Shimon Peres in 1994.
It also has gone to Northern Ireland before. In 1976, early in the British province's three decades of strife, it was won by two women who founded a peace group.

He has many critics spanning Northern Ireland's political divide. Unionist opponents regard him as the man who sold out to their longstanding republican enemies, while nationalist critics have little faith in his willingness to fully recognise their rights. David Trimble was the surprise winner in the race for the leadership of the Ulster Unionist Party in 1995, despite little support from his fellow MPs. In part the success was explained by his high-profile role during a stand-off in Drumcree between members of the Protestant Orange Order and local Catholic residents in 1995. When Orange Order marchers were able to follow their preferred route, despite the objections of people in the area, Mr Trimble was at the head of the parade, alongside the democratic unionist leader, the Rev Ian Paisley.
