Sir Joseph John Thomson

Item Description U/M Price Item# Chart - Laminated - Solar Spectrum This hansome wall chart, covering the visible portion of the solar spectrum, shows the location of the more prominent Fraunhofer lines. These darklines, some narrow and some wide, are caused by the absorption of specific frequencies within the atmosphere of the earth or sun. Both colorful and informative, this chart makes an excellant teaching aid for any science classroom. This durable chart (seen above) is printed on heavy paper stock and is fitted with metal binding strips at top and bottom. The upper strip includes tabes suitable for wall haning. Chart dimention is 71cm x 28cm. each Chart - Laminated - Spectrum Analysis This chart shows the visible continuous spectrum of the sun and the emission or bright line spectra of ten relatively common elements. It provides an excellant beginning point to show the student the total individuality of the spectrum of each element. It also presents an opportunity to discuss the general relationship between the number of lines and the number of atomic shell electrons.

From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent. BIOGRAPHY
'J.J.' Thomson was one of the foremost physicists of his day. His name is principally remembered for the discovery of the electron and for his work on gaseous exchanges. Thomson was elected FRS in 1884 (Bakerian Lecture 1913, Royal Medal 1894, Hughes Medal 1902, Copley Medal 1914, PRS 1915-1920). In 1906 Thomson was awarded the Nobel Prize for Physics for his investigation of the conduction of electricity by gases. He was knighted in 1908 and appointed to the Order of Merit in 1912. JOSEPH JOHN THOMSON
Joseph John Thomson was born in Cheetham Hill, a suburb of Manchester on December 18, 1856. He enrolled at Owens College, Manchester, in 1870, and in 1876 entered Trinity College Cambridge as a minor scholar. He became a Fellow of Trinity College in 1880, when he was Second Wrangler and Second Smith's Prizeman, and he remained a member of the College for the rest of his life, becoming Lecturer in 1883 and Master in 1918. He was Cavendish Professor of Experimental Physics at Cambridge, where he succeeded Lord Rayleigh , from 1884 to 1918 and Honorary Professor of Physics, Cambridge and Royal Institution , London.
Thomson's early interest in atomic structure was reflected in his Treatise on the Motion of Vortex Rings which won him the Adams Prize in 1884. His Application of Dynamics to Physics and Chemistry appeared in 1886, and in 1892 he had his
