J. J. Thomson
Joseph John Thomson was born in a Manchester suburb (4) on December 18, 1856 (3). His father was a bookseller and publisher (4) who died when Joseph was sixteen (3). When Joseph was 34 he married Miss Rose Paget on January 22, 1890 (3). They had two children; George Paget Thomson and Joan Paget Thomson (3). George also became a physicist and studied in the same area as Joseph (3). Joseph John Thomson died on August 30, 1940 (3). Joseph went to Owens College in Manchester (3) to study engineering (4). He was unable to apprentice due to his fathers death and the lack of money (4). He did however finish the engineering course at Owens College (4). One of his professors at Owens College encouraged Joseph to apply for the Trinity College prize fellowship. Joseph applied and won based on his thesis, which states, "electric charge diminishes evaporation from a small drop and may allow it to grow under conditions in which an uncharged drop would disappear" (4). He then went to school at Trinity College in Cambridge (4) on a mathematics scholarship (3). He finished his degree in physics in 1880 (4) at Trinity College second in his class (3). Joseph John Thomson received many awards and honors during his life. He won the Adams Prize in mathematics in 1882 for his essay on vortex ring (4). He also was chosen to be the Master of Trinity College in 1918 (3). In 1906 he won the Nobel Prize in physics for his research of the discharge of electricity in gases (3).
