In his will, Alfred Nobel stated that prizes for Literature be given to those who, during the preceding year, "shall have conferred the greatest benefit on mankind" and that one part be given to the person who "shall have produced in the field of literature the most outstanding work in an ideal direction." The prize, therefore, is not associated with one particular book, but bestowed upon an author who produces works consistent with Nobel's vision. Create your own collection of Nobel Prize winners. Born of simple country parents, Frans Eemil Sillanpaa grew up amid the Finnish forests that later provided the setting for his literary works. His first efforts at writing were short stories and magazine articles. His insight and distinctive style quickly established his critical reputation as an author. Soon, a publisher approached the budding writer to try his hand at a novel. According to his own story, Sillanpaa spent the next years alternating between toiling over his novel and explaining to the eager publisher why it was not yet finished. Finally, it was published in 1916 and titled Life and Sun . Like his early short stories, the book was quite successful and established Sillanpaa as a major author of his day. Following his first novel, his reputation spread throughout the Scandinavian countries as he turned out novel after novel, edging his way into the hearts of his countrymen. However, it was Meek Heritage , a novel describing the Finnish Civil War with both sympathy and realism that earned him a Nobel Prize in 1939. This book, published in Finland in 1919, appeared on bookshelves while the Finnish Civil War was tearing his country apart. With its timely subject matter and the author's well-regarded writing skill, it was a tremendous success. In his works, Sillanpaa's country origins often surface and his love of the simple, peasant life is quite evident. The novels and stories he wrote ring clear with a strong nationalism and he remains one of Finland's favorite authors.

Finland

Finland is a country in northern Europe famous for its scenic beauty. Thousands of lovely lakes dot Finland's landscape, and thick forests cover almost two-thirds of the land. The country has a long, deeply indented coast, marked by colorful red and gray granite rocks. Thousands of scenic islands lie offshore.
Sweden lies to the west of Finland, northern Norway lies to the north, and Russia lies to the east. The Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia, two extensions of the Baltic Sea, border Finland on the south and southwest. The northernmost part of the country lies inside the Arctic Circle in a region called the Land of the Midnight Sun. In this region of Finland, the sun shines 24 hours a day for long periods each summer. Helsinki, the country's capital and largest city, is located in the south on the Gulf of Finland.
Most of Finland's people live in the southern part of the country, where the climate is mildest. Finns love the outdoors and the arts. They have a high standard of living and receive many welfare benefits from the government.
Most of Finland's wealth comes from its huge forests. They form the basis of the country's thriving forest-products industry, which includes woodworking and the manufacture of paper and pulp.
