Jean-Paul Sartre Dates:
Born: June 21, 1905 in Paris, France
Died: April 15, 1980 in Paris, France Nobel Prize in Literature: 1964 Biography: Jean-Paul Sartre was a French novelist and philosopher who is famous for his development and defense of atheistic existential philosophy. Sartre was unusual in that he wrote philosophy both for philosophers and for lay people. Works aimed at the former were typical philosophical books while works aimed at the latter were plays or novels. All expressed the same basic ideas, but in different forms. Sartre was active in the French Resistance when the Nazis controlled his country, and he tried to apply his existentialist philosophy to real-life political problems of his age. As a result, he remained through his life also a committed Marxist, although he repudiated the communist party in France.

Jean Paul Sartre
Jean-Paul Sartre (1905 - 1980) was a French existentialist philosopher, novelist and critic.
His longtime companion was Simone de Beauvoir , whom he met at the École Normale Superieure in 1929. There were two main periods in his career. The first period was defined by his work Being and Nothingness . He believed in the fundamental freedom of human beings and reflected on what he saw as the unbearable nature of that freedom. In the second major period in his career, Sartre was known as a politically engaged intellectual. He embraced Communism, though he never officially joined the Communist party. Major works: Nausea The Wall Being and Nothingness No Exit The Words The Flies , a play. Sartre was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1964, but refused it. He is buried in Cimetiere de Montparnasse, Paris, France. [Adapted from Wikipedia

Sartre, Jean Paul (1905-80), French philosopher, dramatist, novelist, and political journalist, who was a leading exponent of existentialism. Being and Nothingness. Critique of Dialectical Reason In his later philosophic work Critique of Dialectical Reason (1960; trans. 1976), Sartre's emphasis shifted from existentialist freedom and subjectivity to Marxist social determinism. Sartre argued that the influence of modern society over the individual is so great as to produce serialization, by which he meant loss of self. Individual power and freedom can only be regained through group revolutionary action. Despite this exhortation to revolutionary political activity, Sartre himself did not join the Communist party, thus retaining the freedom to criticize the Soviet invasions of Hungary in 1956 and Czechoslovakia in 1968. He died in Paris, April 15, 1980. Other Writings Sartre's other works include the novels Nausea (1938; trans. 1949) and the unfinished series Les chemins de la liberté (The Roads of Liberty), comprising The Age of Reason (1945; trans. 1947), The Reprieve (1945; trans. 1947), and Troubled Sleep (1949; trans. 1951); the biography of the controversial French writer Jean Genet, Saint Genet, Actor and Martyr (1952; trans. 1952); the plays No Exit (1944; trans. 1946), The Respectful Prostitute (1946; trans. 1947), and The Condemned of Altona (1959; trans. 1961); his autobiography, The Words (1964; trans. 1964); and a biography of the French author Gustave Flaubert (3 vol., 1971-72).

Jean Paul Sartre
Jean Paul Sartre was born in Paris, June 21, 1905 as the first child of a marriage entered into a little over a year previously. His father, Jean-Baptiste, had meanwhile died of an infection contracted whilst serving in the French navy, Jean Paul grew up in the home of his maternal grandfather, Karl Schweitzer.     This Karl Schwietzer was a professor of German language at the Sorbonne, the author of numerous published works, and also an uncle of the celebrated medical missionary Albert Schwietzer.    Other circumstances than the demise of his father also conspired to make Sartre's childhood difficult. He was noticeably small in stature and obviously cross-eyed besides being over-intelligent and bookish. His mother was also cloyingly affectionate.     The difficulty Sartre found in gaining acceptance, and his precociousness, together with grandfather Karl's tutoring, led to his putting together a book entitles Les Mots (The Words) which related the experience of himself and his mother in the Luxembourg Gardens in Paris in search of childhood playmates.
He was inducted into the French military following the outbreak of European war in 1939 and was detailed to serve in a meterological section charged with the management of weather balloons. He was subsequently captured in June 1940 and imprisoned into 1941 by the Germans.

Main Page Life Quotes Book Store ... Realm of Existentialism 1905-1980 French writer and philosopher. A leading existentialist , he wrote literary works, such as the autobiographical novel Nausea (1938) and the play No Exit (1944), and philosophical volumes that include Being and Nothingness (1943). Sartre declined the 1964 Nobel Prize for literature. Existentialism is nothing less than an attempt to draw all the consequences of a coherent atheistic position. It isn't trying to plunge man into despair at all. But if one calls every attitude of unbelief despair, like the Christians, then the word is not being used in its original sense. Existentialism isn't so atheistic that it wears itself out showing that God doesn't exist. Rather, it declares that even if God did exist, that would change nothing. There you've got our point of view. Not that we believe that God exists, but we think that the problem of His existence is not the issue. In this sense, existentialism is optimistic, a doctrine of action, and it is plain dishonesty for Christians to make no distinction between their own despair and ours and then to call us despairing.
