Sadat, 1974 [Video] in full MUHAMMAD ANWAR EL-SADAT, el-Sadat also spelled AS-SADAT (b. Dec. 25, 1918, Mit Abu al-Kum, al-Minufiyah governorate, Egyptd. Oct. 6, 1981, Cairo), Egyptian army officer and politician who was president of Egypt from 1970 until his death. He initiated serious peace negotiations with Israel, an achievement for which he shared the 1978 Nobel Prize for Peace with Israeli prime minister Menachem Begin . Under their leadership, Egypt and Israel made peace with each other in 1979. Sadat graduated from the Cairo Military Academy in 1938. During World War II he plotted to expel the British from Egypt with the help of the Germans. The British arrested and imprisoned him in 1942, but he later escaped. In 1950 he joined Gamal Abdel Nasser's Free Officers organization; he participated in their armed coup against the Egyptian monarchy in 1952 and supported Nasser's election to the presidency in 1956. Sadat held various high offices that led to his serving in the vice presidency (1964-66, 1969-70). He became acting president upon Nasser's death on Sept. 28, 1970, and was elected president in a plebiscite on October 15. Sadat's domestic policies included decentralization and diversification of the economy and relaxation of Egypt's political structure. It was in foreign affairs that Sadat made his most dramatic efforts. Feeling that the Soviet Union gave him inadequate support in Egypt's continuing confrontation with Israel, he expelled thousands of Soviet technicians and advisers from the country in 1972. The following year he launched, with Syria, a joint invasion of Israel that began the Arab-Israeli war of October 1973. The Egyptian army achieved a tactical surprise in its attack on the Israeli-held Sinai Peninsula, and, though Israel successfully counterattacked, Sadat came out of the war with greatly enhanced prestige as the first Arab leader to actually retake some territory from Israel.

His first novel was published in 1939 and ten more were written before the Egyptian Revolution of July 1952, when he stopped writing for several years. One novel was republished in 1953, however, and the appearance of the Cairo Triology, Bayn al Qasrayn, Qasr al Shawq, Sukkariya (Between-the-Palaces, Palace of Longing, Sugarhouse) in 1957 made him famous throughout the Arab world as a depictor of traditional urban life. With The Children of Gebelawi (1959), he began writing again, in a new vein that frequently concealed political judgements under allegory and symbolism. Works of this second period include the novels, The Thief and the Dogs (1961), Autumn Quail (1962), Small Talk on the Nile (1966), and Miramar (1967), as well as several collections of short stories.

October 16 ~  Peace Egypt During the Sadat Years Peace is more p r e c i o u s than a piece of l a n d ." ~ Anwar Sadat On this date in 1970, Mohamed Anwar El Sadat (1918-1981) was elected President of the Arab Republic of Egypt. Sadat was born in the Nile delta village of Mi Abu al Kawm to a family of 13 children. He and Prime Minister of Israel Menachem Begin negotiated the historic Camp David Accords with President Jimmy Carter . Both Begin and Sadat shared the 1978 Nobel Peace Prize Sadat courageously gambled everything for peace and called his dedication to Middle East peace his "sacred mission." "He who cannot change the very fabric of his thought will never be able to change reality, and will never, therefore, make any progress," Sadat explained. With Sadat's statesmanship, Egypt became the first Arab state to recognize Israel's right to exist. "There can be hope only for a society which acts as one big family, not as many separate ones," he said. There is an old Arabic Proverb that says, "Trust in Allah, but tie your camel." In embracing Israel, Sadat outraged the Arab world. At a Cairo military parade in, while looking up at air force jets overhead, he was assassinated by Islamic fundamentalists within his own army. The Birth of Mohamed Anwar El- Sadat (1918-1981)
President of the Arab Republic of Egypt (1970-1981)
President Mohamed Anwar El- Sadat - born in December 25, 1918 - assumed the Presidency of the Arab Republic of Egypt in 1970 upon the death of President Gamal Abdul Naser. He was a seasoned states man; one we should not forget.
Sadat's Presidency witnessed significant political events on national, regional and international arenas. Politically, the man managed to effect significant changes; in May 1971 Egypt had its first permanent constitution since the 1952 July Revolution, which restored to the country pluralism and the multi-party system ushured in 1976 bringing about more political and social freedoms. On the economic plane, Sadat laid the foundations of Openness to the world and the shift from centralized to market economy. He also managed to reopen the Suez Canal to international navigation in 1975. During his term of office, Egypt launched a liberation war to restore its territories from Israel in 1973. It was that military victory which restored to the Arab Nation its self confidence . The triumph paved the road to regional peace ,the first disengagement agreement between Egypt and Israel was implemented in 1974 and the second in 1975. President Sadat made his most valiant move in 1977 when he paid the historic visit to Jerusalem; paving the way for Egyptian-Israeli negotiations which culminated in the Camp David framework for peace in the Middle East in 1978 followed by the 1979 Egyptian-Israeli peace treaty by the virtue of which Israel withdrew from Sinai .The two countries then established diplomatic relations in 1982.

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.

Contents Cover Back Issues E-mail the Editor ... RU Home During the 1985-86 school year, Jehan Sadat graced the RU community as our first Distinguished Visiting Professor, sharing her wisdom and experience with students on the subjects of women in the Third World and the history of her homeland, Egypt, and inspiring all who came in contact with her. Today, her insight is all the more welcome. After a few years, however, she gradually resumed her role as educator, lecturer and activist. Currently, she is Associate Resident Scholar at the University of Maryland, where the Anwar Sadat Chair for Development and Peace was established and fully endowed in 1997. The wonders of email allowed me to interview her despite her incredible schedule. What follows are, in her own words (albeit condensed), her thoughtful responses to questions about the current state of the world.
Despite the protracted violence, I will not abandon the idea of peace. I will continue to give a message of peace and to remind others that my husband, who was the first to make peace, also gave his life for peace. The best way to improve the standard of living and the economic well-being of a nation is through the education and training of the people.
