Ernest Rutherford (1871 - 1937) neuseeländischer Physiker britischer Abstammung Ernest Rutherford wurde am 30. August 1871 in Brightwater, Neuseeland geboren Nach außergewöhnlichen schulischen Leistungen studierte er von 1890 bis 1894 in Christchurch (Neuseeland) und von 1895 bis1898 am Cavendish-Laboratorium in Cambridge (England). Die Entdeckung der Radioaktivität durch Antoine Henri Becquerel Hans Geiger und Thomas Royds. 1907 kehrte Rutherford nach England auf den Langworthy-Lehrstuhl in Manchester zurück. Für die Untersuchungen über den Zerfall der Elemente und die Chemie der radioaktiven Materie erhielt er 1908 den Nobel preis für Chemie. Rutherford arbeitete u.a. mit Radium, das ihm die Wiener Akademie der Wissenschaften lieh. Hans Geiger und Ernest Marsden entdeckten 1911 in Rutherfords Labor, daß einige Alphateilchen beim Durchstrahlen einer sehr dünnen Goldfolie stark abgelenkt werden. Daraus entwickelte er 1911 eine Streuformel sowie ein Atommodell, das auch heute noch in Schulen gelehrt wird. Niels Henrik Bohr entwickelte das Rutherfordsche Atommodell 1913 unter Berücksichtigung der klassischen Elektrodynamik fort; Henry Moseley schloß aus den Frequenzen radioaktiver Strahlen auf die Kernladungszahl der sie aussendenden Substanzen und ordnete sie demgemäß in das Periodensystem der Elemente Rutherford wurde 1914 zum Ritter geschlagen. 1919 gelang ihm die erste künstlich erzielte Kernumwandlung durch Beschießen von Stickstoff mit Alphateilchen. Sir. Ernest Rutherford Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. Thomson later asked Rutherford to join him in a study of the effects of passing a beam of X-rays through a gas. They discovered that the X-rays produced large quantities of electrically charged particles and these ionized atoms recombined to form neutral molecules. Working on his own, Rutherford then devised a technique for measuring the velocity and rate of recombination of these positive and negative ions. The published papers on this subject remain classics to the present day. In 1900 Ernest married Mary Newton, eventually having one daughter. His chief recreations were golf and motoring. He also violently opposed the rise of the Nazi party in Germany. In the 1930's, the last years of his life he helped Jewish refugees flee from Nazi persecution. He was said to be a very kind and gracious man. He died in Cambridge on October 19, 1937, following a short illness, and his ashes were buried in the nave of Westminister Abbey, just west of Sir Isaac Newton's tomb and by that of Lord Kelvin.
