Molecular devices, systems and computers
Future generations of circuit engineers must grapple with molecular devices made of inorganic or biological molecules, interacting via quantum mechanical laws. These single-molecule devices will exploit a broad variety of exotic molecular scale phenomena, including ballistic transports, Coulomb blockade, quasi-particle tunneling, Aharoni-Bohm effects, etc., to dramatically reduce the feature size of present computers by several orders of magnitude, while greatly enhancing its functionality and speed.

NANOTECHNOLOGY
The first reaction is "I'm glad you guys (that includes women, of course) found a new name for chemistry . Now you have the incentive to learn what you didn't want to learn in college." Chemists have been practicing nanotechnology, structure and reactivity and properties, for two centuries, and for 50 years by design. What is exciting about modern nanotechnology is (a) the marriage of chemical synthetic talent with a direction provided by "device-driven" ingenuity coming from engineering, and (b) a certain kind of courage provided by those incentives, to make arrays of atoms and molecules that ordinary, no, extraordinary chemists just wouldn't have thought of trying. Now they're pushed to do so. And of course they will. They can do anything. Nanotechnology is the way of ingeniously controlling the building of small and large structures, with intricate properties; it is the way of the future, a way of precise, controlled building, with, incidentally, environmental benignness built in by design.

Videos Statement of 100 Nobel Laureates OSLO, Norway-December 7, 2001 (OTVNewswire) At the Nobel Peace Prize Centennial Symposium here yesterday celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Nobel prize, 100 Nobel laureates have issued a brief but dire warning of the "profound dangers" facing the world. Their statement predicts that our security depends on immediate environmental and social reform. The following is the text of their statement: THE STATEMENT: The most profound danger to world peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust.

The Dispossessed
by 100 Nobel Laureates
The following statement was released on December 7, 2001, by 100 Nobel Prize winners to coincide with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the first Nobel prizes. Although the statement began circulating among the laureates last summer, most of them signed it after September 11. The most profound danger to world Peace in the coming years will stem not from the irrational acts of states or individuals but from the legitimate demands of the world's dispossessed. Of these poor and disenfranchised, the majority live a marginal existence in equatorial climates. Global warming, not of their making but originating with the wealthy few, will affect their fragile ecologies most. Their situation will be desperate and manifestly unjust. It cannot be expected, therefore, that in all cases they will be content to await the beneficence of the rich. If then we permit the devastating power of modern weaponry to spread through this combustible human landscape, we invite a conflagration that can engulf both rich and poor. The only hope for the future lies in cooperative international action, legitimized by democracy. It is time to turn our backs on the unilateral search for security, in which we seek to shelter behind walls. Instead, we must persist in the quest for united action to counter both global warming and a weaponized world.

As this issue of Update goes to press, we've received a June 4 media advisory from the National Science Foundation, forwarded by Senior Associate Richard Smith, about a lecture on June 16: Nobel Laureate Eyes Nanoscale Manufacturing
In New Engineering Lecture Series
Nobel Laureate Heinrich Rohrer, inventor of the scanning tunneling microscope, will inaugurate a new National Science Foundation engineering lecture series with a talk titled "The Nanometer Age: Challenges and Chances."
Rohrer will discuss recent advances in precision nanoscale science and technology, which will permit building things molecule by molecule and heralding a class of made-to-order materials with streamlined structures and properties. Ultra precise medical instruments could permit surgeons to operate on individual cells. Materials dozens of times stronger than steel of the same weight could be produced. The ability to manipulate molecules would greatly contribute to an emerging field of science that explores how to arrange conditions so that atoms spontaneously assemble into specific molecular structures.
Rohrer and Gerd Binnig received the King Faisal Prize and the Hewlett Packard Europhysics Prize in 1984, and the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1986. Rohrer was inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame in 1994. He joined IBM's Zurich research laboratory in 1963.
