Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

10 October 1994
The Nobel Assembly at the Karolinska Institute
has today decided to award the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for 1994 jointly to
Alfred G. Gilman and Martin Rodbell
for their discovery of "G-proteins and the role of these proteins in signal transduction in cells".
Summary
It has been known for some time that cells communicate with each other by means of hormones and other signal substances, which are released from glands, nerves and other tissues. It is only recently that we have begun to understand how the cell handles this information from the outside and converts it into relevant action - i.e. how signals are transduced in cells.

Minutes of the 2039 th Meeting
Speaker: Robert D. Shull, National Institute of Standards and Technology Topic: The President, Mr. Ohlmacher, called the 2039 th meeting to order at 8:18 p.m. on February 3, 1995. The Recording Secretary read the minutes of the 2038 th meeting and they were approved. The President then read a portion of the minutes of the 431 st meeting February 2, 1895. The Nobel awards are announced in October in order to have sufficient time to make all the arrangements for the ceremony in December. After his death in 1896 Alfred Nobel provided in his will for awards to be made annually to those who had most benefitted humankind in physics, chemistry, medicine-physiology literature, and peace, specifying the areas in that order. A Nobel Memorial Award for economics was introduced in 1969. The events arranged by the Nobel awards committee began a week before the awards ceremony on the flight to Sweden with the other five US Nobel 1994 laureates, George Olah for chemistry, Martin Rodbell and Alfred Gilman for medicine, John Nash and John Harsanyi for economics, and their guests. The other laureates joining them in Stockholm were Kenzaburo Oe for literature and Reinhard Selten for economics. The events of the next ten days were dazzling and exhausting. The physics and chemistry laureates present lectures at the Royal Swedish Academy of Science two days before the award ceremony. The medicine laureates present lectures at the Karolinska Institute of Medicine and the literature laureates present lectures at the Swedish Academy. The peace laureates are selected by Norway and those awards are presented in Oslo.

Martin Rodbell, a Baltimore native who earned his undergraduate degree in biology at the university, is also the ninth Hopkins-connected Nobel laureate in medicine. Dr. Rodbell, 68, a retired scientist with the National Institutes of Health, was chosen last week to share the 1994 prize with Alfred G. Gilman of the University of Texas. They will split the prizethis year worth $930,000and be honored with this year's other Nobelists in Dec. 10 ceremonies in Stockholm and Oslo. The researchers were honored for work in the 1970s deciphering the communications system the human body uses to regulate cellular activity. Their work focused on G proteins, the substances on cell surfaces that serve as intermediaries between outside signals, transmitted by hormones or drugs, and the cellular proteins that respond to those signals. Dr. Rodbell is the third Hopkins graduate to win a Nobel in the 1990s, following two University of Chicago economists, Merton Miller Ph.D.'52, who won in 1990, and Robert Fogel Ph.D.'63, a winner last year. The university's first Nobel laureate was Woodrow Wilson, winner of the Nobel Peace Prize in 1919 and recipient of a doctorate in history in 1886. Three current faculty members are Nobel winners: biologist Christian Anfinsen of the School of Arts and Sciences and molecular biologists Hamilton O. Smith and Daniel Nathans of the School of Medicine. Go back to Previous Page Go to Gazette Homepage
