Cecil Frank Powell was born on December 5th, 1903, at Tonbridge, Kent, where his father, Frank Powell, was one of a family of gunsmiths who had long practised the trade in the town. His grandfather, George Bisacre, had established a private school in the nearby town of Southborough and his family ties and influences therefore tended to encourage a regard for the value both of learning and the practical arts.
He attended a local elementary school and won a scholarship, at the age of eleven, to Judd School, Tonbridge. From there he won open scholarships to Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge , where he graduated with First Class Honours in the Natural Science Tripos (1924-1925).
As a postgraduate student, Powell worked in the Cavendish Laboratory under C.T.R. Wilson and Lord Rutherford until 1927 when he gained his Ph.D. and moved to the University of Bristol as Research Assistant to A.M. Tyndall in the H.H. Wills Physical Laboratory. He was eventually appointed lecturer, then reader and, in 1936, he visited the West Indies as seismologist of an expedition investigating volcanic activity. He returned to Bristol in the following year and in 1948 he was established as Melville Wills Professor of Physics.

Powell, Cecil Frank
(b. Dec. 5, 1903, Tonbridge, Kent, Eng.d. Aug. 9, 1969, near Milan, Italy), British physicist and winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1950 for his development of the photographic method of studying nuclear processes and for the resulting discovery of the pion (pi- meson ), a heavy subatomic particle. The pion proved to be the hypothetical particle proposed in 1935 by Yukawa Hideki of Japan in his theory of nuclear physics. In 1928 Powell was appointed research assistant at the Henry Herbert Wills Physical Laboratory at the University of Bristol. He became professor of physics at Bristol in 1948 and director of the Wills Laboratory in 1964. Between 1939 and 1945 he developed the necessary techniques for using sensitive photographic emulsions to record the paths of cosmic rays. In plates exposed at the top of high mountains or sent up in high-altitude balloons, cosmic-ray interactions were recorded, and, in 1947, the data revealed the existence of the pion ( ) as well as the process whereby it decays into two other particles, an antimuon (mu-meson) and a neutrino. Powell also discovered the antipion (

    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/P/Powell/1.html
Powell, Cecil Frank English physicist who investigated the charged subatomic particles in cosmic radiation by using photographic emulsions carried in weather balloons. This led to his discovery of the pion ( meson) 1947, a particle whose existence had been predicted by Japanese physicist Hideki Yukawa 1935. Powell was awarded a Nobel prize 1950.
Powell was born in Tonbridge, Kent, and studied at Cambridge, where he carried out research at the Cavendish Laboratory under Ernest Rutherford and C T R Wilson, taking photographs of particle tracks in a cloud chamber. From 1928 Powell worked at the Wills Physics Laboratory at Bristol University, becoming professor 1948.
In 1938, instead of photographing the cloud-chamber tracks, Powell made the ionizing particles trace paths in the emulsions of a stack of photographic plates. The technique received a boost with the development of more sensitive emulsions during World War II and Powell used it in his discovery of the pion. He collaborated with Italian physicist Giuseppe Occhialini (1907- ), and together they published Nuclear Physics in Photographs 1947, which became a standard text on the subject.
