Beginning Instructional Design
Behaviorism
Basics of Behaviorism The Behaviorism Learning Theories are the earliest in the development of Instructional Design. This theory focuses on observable changes in behavior. It focuses on a new behavior being repeated until it becomes automatic. The Behaviorism theories were very popular in the 1960's. While some still follow their views, other learning theories have gained popularity. Behaviorists choose to examine the reflex action of a person after they received a stimuli. Behaviorists believe it is possible to explain learning without examining the mental processes. Behaviorists view the mind as a "black box". This mean they believe the mind reacts to stimulus and the subsequent behavior that results from this can be quantitatively measured. This ignores any of the thought process that may have occurred in the mind. Key Players in the Development of the Behaviorist Theory Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1849-1936) (Classical Conditioning) Background:
Theory: Classical Conditioning
Ivan Petrovich Pavlov was a Russian Physiologist of circulation and digestion. He is best known for his work in classical conditioning or stimulus substitution. He won the Nobel Laureate in Medicine for his work on the physiology of digestion. (Nobel e-Museum)

Responsible Thinking Process ® The following was a presentation by Taylor Knight, the son of LeEdna Custer-Knight, school psychologist at Clarendon Elementary School in Phoenix. LeEdna, along with George Venetis, then the school's assistant principal, had heard me express my ideas on school discipline at a conference they were attending. She and George invited me to their school and supported my effort at creating the program which is now called the responsible thinking process (RTP). After reviewing Taylor's presentation, at his mother's request, I quizzed him about perceptual control theory (PCT), which is the theory upon which RTP is based. I found Taylor with a good, basic understanding of PCT. Taylor recently presented the following at his school's science fair. A PAVLOVIAN EXPERIMENT BY Taylor Knight, age 11
assisted by Jack Still Test Design Our test is a modified form of Pavlov's famous behaviorism test featuring a dog, a bell, and dog food. But in this case we are using a person, a bell, and chocolate. The main test is; I ring a bell and feed Jack some chocolate, again and again leaving intervals in between each feeding, then after many feedings I ring the bell and do not give him any chocolate and see if he salivates more than average. Pavlov receives Nobel Prize for discovery of conditioned refl exes This year, Ivan Petrovich Pavlov (1849-1936) was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for his work on the physiology of the digestive glands, and particularly for his experiments on nervous stimulation of gastric secretions that led to the discovery of the conditioned reflexes. Pavlov’s research had significant influence in the fields of neurology and psychology, and its impact on education theory and practice was expressed a few years later in the U.S. through the development of the behaviorist school, particularly in the works of Watson, Thorndike and Skinner. Harrison (Scott) Brown was an American geochemist known for his role in isolating plutonium for its use in the first atomic bombs and for his studies regarding meteorites and the Earth's origin. He was one of 67 concerned Manhattan Project scientists at Oak Ridge to sign a July 1945 petition to the President, which said, in part, "...Therefore we recommend that before this weapon be used without restriction in the present conflict, its powers should be adequately described and demonstrated, and the Japanese nation should be given the opportunity to consider the consequences of further refusal to surrender." Born 26 Sep 1886; died 1977.
Archibald Vivian Hill was a British physiologist and biophysicist who received (with Otto Meyerhof) the 1922 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for discoveries concerning the production of heat in muscles, research which helped establish the origin of muscular force in the breakdown of carbohydrates with formation of lactic acid in the muscle. Hill's early experiments researched the effects of electrical stimulation on nerve function, the mechanical efficiency of muscle, energy processes in muscle during recovery, the interaction between oxygen and hemoglobin, and quantitative aspects of drug kinetics on muscle. Hill combined aspects of physics and biology, a discipline which he championed as biophysics.

THE LIBRARY OF THE COLLEGE
OF PHYSICIANS OF PHILADELPHIA
AND ITS RUSSIAN COLLECTION
Kevin Crowford
(Philadelphia, USA)
The College of Physicians of Philadelphia, a not-for-profit medical academy, was founded in 1787. A year later, in pursuit of the society's mission to disseminate medical knowledge of the day, a library was established at the College. Since its first few volumes were received as a gift John Morgan (1735—1789), founder of the first medical school in the United States (what is now the medical school of the University of Pennsylvania), the Library has grown into one of the largest collections of medical history resources in the U.S. The Historical Services Division of the Library was created to acquire, maintain, and preserve the rare book, manuscript, archival, and photograph collections.
The Historical Services Division of the Library contains over 300,000 books and journals published before 1966. Included in this total are 440 incunabula and more 12,000 pre-1801 imprints. There are strong holdings in anatomy, dermatology, neurology, obstetrics, gynecology, pathology and ophtalmology. The Library has particularly rich collections on homeopathy, tuberculosis, and yellow fever.
Originally designed as a working library for the local medical profession, the Library's acquisition policy from the beginning has focused on works in English or other languages. Therefore, the Library's holdings of materials in languages that do not use the Arabic alphabet are relatively small. However, Russian holdings make up for in importance what they lack in number.
