"Animal experimentation has been essential to development of all cardiac surgery, transplantation surgery, joint replacements and all vaccinations. The world is not flat." - Joseph E. Murray, M.D., Nobel Prize Winner 1990 Erwin NEHER and Bert SAKMANN - describe chemical communications between cells. Edmond H. FISCHER and Edwin G. KREBS - show cells can adapt pre-existing proteins for a job rather than make new ones from scratch. Richard J. ROBERTS and Philip A. SHARP - show how DNA and individual genes can relate differently in different circumstances. Alfred G. GILMAN and Martin RODBELL - show how individual cells interpret chemical signals, and separately how a chemical, guanosine triphosphate (GTP), enables us to see, smell and taste. Edward B. LEWIS, Christiane NUSSLEIN-VOLHARD and Prof. Eric E. WIESCHAUS – describe genetic control of early embryonic development.

1968Dr. Marshall W. Nirenberg, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, shared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for discovering the key to deciphering the genetic code. Dr. Nirenberg and two other researchers, working independently, with whom he shared the prize, made major advances in understanding the chemical mechanisms by which genetic language or information is translated into various proteins that determine the nature and characteristics of all living things. Dr. Nirenberg was the first NIH Nobelist and also the first Federal employee to receive a Nobel Prize. 1970Dr. Julius Axelrod, National Institute of Mental Healthshared the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with two scientists from England and Swedenfor independent research into the chemistry of nerve transmission. The three were cited for their “discoveries concerning the humoral transmitters in the nerve terminals and the mechanisms for their storage, release and inactivation.” Specifically, Dr. Axelrod found an enzyme that terminates the action of the nerve transmitter, noradrenaline. He also demonstrated that some antidepressant drugs act by preventing the reuptake of noradrenaline and thus prolong its action in the brain. 1972Dr. Christian B. Anfinsen

Nobelist's memoir mixes science and humanity
    By John Lenger

That's why Joe Murray's autobiography is a welcome antidote to the idea of surgeon as self-absorbed superman. When Murray performed the first successful kidney transplant at what was then Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston on Dec. 23, 1954, between identical twins Ronald and Richard Herrick, the doctor and his surgical team made medical history. The idea of replacing diseased organs - not just kidneys, but also hearts, livers, lungs, and so on - went from science fiction to science fact overnight. Since then, tens of thousands of organ transplants have been performed across the world - more than 20,000 in 1999 just in the United States - giving new life to those who had nearly run out of life, and hope. For his pioneering role, Murray shared the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with E. Donnall Thomas, a friend and colleague who graduated from Harvard Medical School in 1946 and is known as the "father of the bone marrow transplant."

Surgeon Joseph E. Murray is flanked by the world's longest-lived transplant recipient, Edith Helm (left), and her twin sister Wanda Foster. Edith received a kidney from Wanda in 1956 in a transplant procedure pioneered by Murray; the three gathered in May 1996 at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital in Boston to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the historic life-saving operation and unveil a permanent display tracing the surgery professor's groundbreaking, Nobel Prize-winning work in organ transplantation. Making Major Impacts On the World The following is a partial listing of scientific breakthroughs at Harvard University that have made major impacts on society, and on the world: Synthesized a cancer drug more powerful than any other in use. The most complex molecule ever made on a commercial scale, the drug is being tested on patients for whom no effective chemotherapy exists. Discovered a new type of material, called black silicon, which could lead to more efficient ways of converting sunlight to electricity, communicating by light, and monitoring the environment for evidence of global warming. Showed that it may be possible to replace brain cells lost to disease, accidents, or even aging.

Murray, Joseph E. American surgeon, b. Milford, Mass., M.D. Harvard, 1943. Trained as a plastic surgeon, Murray became interested in organ transplants, performing the first human kidney transplant in 1954 between two men who were identical twins. He continued to develop the process, creating new drugs that made it easier for nonrelatives to be donors. For his pioneering procedure he was awarded the 1990 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine, which he shared with E. Donnall Thomas. In later years Murray returned to plastic surgery, developing procedures to correct inborn facial defects in children.

North American Scientists Sweep This Year's Nobel Prizes
By Angela Martello Date: November 12, 1990 Advances in transplant science, synthetic organic chemistry, and the study of quarks have allowed six North American scientists to sweep this year's three Nobel science prizes. E. Donnall Thomas, 70, and Joseph E. Murray, 71, shared the Nobel Prize in medicine or physiology for their work in transplant medicine. Thomas, director emeritus of the Seattle-based Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center's Division of Clinical Research, was cited for his pivotal work on bone marrow transplantationa treatment often offered as a last hope for patients afflicted with various types of leukemia and other blood-related and genetic disorders. In 1956, Thomas successfully transplanted donor marrow into a human patient. Thomas's Nobel Prize came swiftly on the heels of another highly regarded award: He and six other researchers recently received the 1990 Gairdner Foundation International Awards in recognition of their contributions to medical science (see People, page 25 of this issue). Murray, professor of surgery, emeritus, at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston, was recognized by the Nobel committee for his pioneering work in transplant medicine. In 1954, Murray performed the first successful kidney transplant between identical twins. He later championed the use of organs from deceased donors and demonstrated that the application of whole body irradiation could induce immunosuppression, thus reducing the risk that the recipient would reject the donated organ.
