This site has been compiled by a student at Western Washington University. It has a very simple layout and offers a selection of questions, themes and quotes for each of her novels including Beloved Jazz and Song of Solomon . It includes very useful chronologies of the novels, lists points for discussion and sets questions relating to various quotes from the novels. Aniina's Toni Morrison Page
Lots of information on all her books. The Jazz section has essays on the novel, a synopsis and some analysis. The two essays by Eric J. Bauer are particularly good. The first discusses the use of improvisation and music and the way it is expressed through Morrison's use of language. The second compares the use of language and narration in Jazz and Beloved . There is also an Interviews link that has a dozen or so interviews with Toni Morrison talking about her latest novel Paradise The section entitled Other Sources lists links to other Morrison web sites that some people may want to check out.

Click name to view titles Toni Morrison born 1931 in Lorain, Ohio is perhaps the most celebrated contemporary American novelist. Awarded the Nobel Prize for literature in 1993, Morrison powerfully evokes in her fiction the legacies of displacement and slavery that have been bequeathed to the African-American community. Morrison was born in Ohio, educated at Howard University and Cornell University, and is now a member of the faculty of Princeton University. Her most widely read novel is perhaps Beloved (1987), which won the Pulitzer Prize and was recently adapted for film. Song of Solomon which won the 1978 National Book Critics Award for fiction, is perhaps the most lyrical of her novels. In addition to Beloved and Song of Solomon , Morrision wrote 5 other novels including; Jazz Tar Baby Paradise The Bluest Eye , and Sula All of Morrison's fiction, from her first novel, The Bluest Eye , to 1998's Paradise , explores both the need for and the impossibility of real community and the bonds that both unite and divide African-American women. Morrison has also published a volume of critical work entitled Playing in the Dark: Whiteness and the Literary Imagination and has authored Dreaming Emmett , a play produced in 1986.

Her later fiction includes Beloved (1987; Pulitzer), a powerful account of the legacy of slavery, and Jazz (1992), a tale of love and murder set in Harlem in the 1920s. Toni Morrison's lyrical writing style and ambitious subject matter thrust African-American writers to the forefront of the American literary consciousness. Her strong female characters, often imbued with mystical talents, teach us about ourselves almost despite ourselves. In addition to building a fiercely loyal readership, Morrison's efforts have netted her the 1993 Nobel Prize in literature, a Pulitzer Prize (for "Beloved," 1987) and a National Book Award (for "Song of Solomon," 1977). Morrison also dedicates herself to teaching literature most recently at Princeton University. "I take teaching as seriously as I do my writing," she said as she accepted the position at the Ivy League school. FULL NAME

Toni Morrison (1931-...), a black American novelist, won the 1993 Nobel Prize for literature. The Nobel Committee cited Morrison for novels that give "life to an essential aspect of American reality." The committee also noted that she "delves into the language itself, a language she wants to liberate from the fetters of race. And she addresses us with the luster of poetry."
Morrison won the 1988 Pulitzer Prize for fiction for Beloved (1987). The novel tells the story of a former slave tragically haunted by memories of her life in slavery and the baby she killed to save the child from that fate. Beloved demonstrates Morrison's lyrical style, vivid characterizations, and ability to persuade readers to accept the unusual as real. Morrison's first two novels

Nobel laureate Toni Morrison, became the first African-American woman to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature. Her work might be best described in the words of famed opera singer Leontyne Price, "she paints pictures with words, and reading those words is like listening to music."
Toni grew up in Ohio, the daughter of former sharecroppers from the South. It was the Depression, and story-telling was the family's major form of entertainment. As a child she learned African-American folklore which might possibly explain her later knack for composing her lyrically written stories . Prior to writing her first novel, The Bluest Eye , published in 1969, Morrison took an undergraduate, then a graduate degree; taught literature; and was a book editor.

Readers' Comments: So glad to see some new comments. I'd like to get back to "freedom". Perhaps I'm defining it improperly or have never really known true freedom. I just finished "The Bluest Eye" and again there is a reference to freedom and love. At the end of the book, Morrison says, "love is never any better than the lover. Wicked people love wickedly, violent people love violently, weak people love weakly, stupid people love stupidly. but the love of a free man is never safe." Does that mean none of us is free? What is safe love? What does it mean to be free? I'd like to go back to the Hurston book. At the end, Janie is bitten by Tea Cake before she shoots him. There are references to the teeth marks on her. Are we to assume that she is also doomed? Phyllis < JROVNER1@OHIOU.EDU
