This essay, "The Death of Andre Gide" is taken from
Gide, A Collection of Critical Essays
(Prentice Hall, 1970) If, as M. Singlin said to Pascal, "the greatest charity we can show towards the dead is to do what they would have wished us to do while they were still alive"-then, we should spare a great writer who has just entered into eternal life the conventional flatteries of a funeral oration. One of his greatest claims to fame is that never, in the whole course of his career, did he once stop trying to be absolutely honest about himself. I shall not daub this dead man's face with paint. Imperfect Christian though I am, it is as a Christian-and it is what he would have wished of me, and expected from me, that I now meditate beside his grave. I do not pretend to have misunderstood the deadly lesson of L'Immoraliste deadly for him, but also for us, in so far as we hearkened to it. If what Christians believe is true, then Gide knows now what all of us will know before long. What is it that he knows? What is it that he sees? When Lamennais lay dead, his brother wandered round La Chesnaie, sobbing out" "Feli, Feli where art thou?"

Mauriac, Francois 1885-1970, French writer. Mauriac achieved success in 1922 and 1923 with and Genitrix (tr. of both in The Family, 1930). Generally set in or near his native Bordeaux, his novels are imbued with his profound, though nonconformist, Roman Catholicism. His characters exist in a tortured universe; nature is evil and man eternally prone to sin. His major novels are The Desert of Love (1925, tr. 1929), (1927, tr. 1928), and Vipers' Tangle (1932, tr. 1933). Other works include The Frontenacs (1933, tr. 1961) and Woman of the Pharisees (1941, tr. 1946); a life of Racine (1928) and of Jesus (1936, tr. 1937); and plays, notably (1938, tr. 1939). Also a distinguished essayist, Mauriac became a columnist for Figaro after World War II. Collections of his articles and essays include Journal, 1932-39 (1947, partial tr. Second Thoughts, Proust's Way (1949, tr. 1950), and Cain, Where Is Your Brother? (tr. 1962). Mauriac received the 1952 Nobel Prize in Literature.

    One Question To Success
No love, no friendship can cross the path of our destiny without leaving some mark on it forever.
Men resemble great deserted palaces: the owner occupies only a few rooms and has closed-off wings where he never ventures. Every novel worthy of the name is like another planet, whether large or small, which has its own laws just as it has its own flora and fauna. I write whenever it suits me. During a creative period I write every day; a novel should not be interrupted. When I cease to be carried along, when I no longer feel as though I were taking down dictation, I stop. A good critic is the sorcerer that makes some hidden spring gush forth unexpectedly under our feet.
