Gabriel Garcia Marquez, One Hundred Years of Solitude by Toelke Essay Topics and Critical Commentary Essay Topics How does Marquez utilize vocabulary and syntax to achieve the "Marquez style"? (see Magical Realism) What is the significance of the title of the novel, One Hundred Years of Solitude ? Perhaps tie in your analysis with his repetition of the title in his Nobel prize acceptance speech Identify the most significant symbol in the novel and justify your choice. State one possible theme of the novel, and support your position. Give your opinion on why One Hundred Years of Solitude is considered an important novel in the canon of world literature, and why it was seminal in the nomination of Marquez as a Nobel Prize winner. Describe how the setting complements the primary themes of the novel. Describe the Marquez hero. Compare and contrast one aspect of this novel, with another you have read for this class. Instructor's Recommendation: I would like to see an essay on Marquez's unique style. The term "Magical Realism" is often applied to the style of Garcia Marquez's fiction. What does the term mean, and how does it apply to One Hundred Years of Solitude ? There are elements of the supernatural grounded in the everyday life of his characters, hence the combination of the terms magic and realism. What is its purpose? Illustrate your argument with examples.

Famous People: Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Lawrence Block
by Dennis Sellers, dsellers@maccentral.com
September 27, 1999, 7:00 am ET According to the Sept. 27 "New Yorker Magazine," Nobel Prize-winning, Columbian writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez maintains residences in Cuernavca, Mexico; Barcelona, Spain; Paris, France; Havana, Cuba; Cartagena, Columbia; and Barraquilla, Columbia. And he has an identical Mac in each one. (The model of the Mac isn't mentioned, says MacCentral reader Bob Simpson who sent this news nugget our way.) Another famous author is also a big Mac fan. Brian J. Little recently went to a small book-signing session with author Lawrence "Larry" Block in Charlotte, North Carolina. During a few minutes of conversation, Little discovered that the writer is not only a Mac user, but has a laptop G3 and a desktop PowerMac of uncertain vintage. "He did say that it's about time to replace it, so I spent a few minutes extolling the virtues of G4," says Little. Block is the author of the Bernie Rhodenbarr mysteries, as well as the Evan Tanner mysteries and the Matthew Scudder mysteries. He's also written at least two books on how to write good fiction, and has edited a number of crime-story collections. (If you've sent us an item for our Famous People column, please be patient. It will appear, but we've been swamped with entries. If you know of a famous person using the Mac, send it to Yours Truly at

"One Hundred Years of Solitude"
Start with this book, if you are new to Latin American writers, specifically the category of fiction called "magical realism." It is a wonderful story that combines the fantastic with the realistic. One Hundred Years of Solitude tells the story of the rise and fall, birth and death of the mythical town of Macondo through the history of the Buendía family. It is a rich and brilliant chronicle of life, death and the tragedy-comedy of man. From the jacket cover: "'In the noble, ridiculous, beautiful, and tawdry story of the Buendía family one sees all mankind, just as in the history, myths, growth, and decay of Macondo one sees all of Latin America." García Márquez writes with simplicity, ease and purity. I read this book twice before I went out and purchased it in hard cover so that I could always have it in my collection and read it again and again. If you have read this, but want more about Macondo, read

B C D ... Z by birthday from the calendar Credits and feedback Latin-American journalist, novelist and short story writer, a central figure in the so-called Magic Realism movement. The term was first used in the 1920s Germany to describe some contemporary painters, whose works expressed surrealistic visions. In the late 1940s the term was applied to literature by Cuban novelist Alejo Carpentier, who used the concept "lo real maravilloso" (marvelous reality). He recognized the tendency of Latin-American writers to combine fantasy elements and mythology with otherwise realistic fiction. However, García Márquez has considered himself fundamentally a realist who writes about Colombian and Latin American reality exactly as he has observed it. "There is a short but telling portrait of the novelist Gabriel García Márquez, who every morning reads a couple of pages of a dictionary (any dictionary except the pompous ) - a habit our author compares to that of Stendhal, who perused the Napoleonic Code so as to learn to write in a terse and exact style."

Author: Garcia Marquez, Gabriel
Date and Place of birth:
b. March 6, 1928, Aracataca, Colombia. Life and Works:
Latin-American author of novels and short stories, a central figure in the so-called magic realism movement in Latin-American literature. His grandfather died when he was eight years old, and due to his grandmother's increasing blindness, he went to live with his parents in Sucre, where his father was working as a pharmacist. Soon after he arrived in Sucre, it was decided that he should begin his formal schooling. He was sent to a boarding school in Barranquilla, a port city at the mouth of the Magdalena River. There, he acquired a reputation as being a shy boy who wrote humorous poems and drew cartoons. So serious and non-athletic was he that he was nicknamed "the Old Man" by his classmates. Gabriel Garcia Marquez began his career as a journalist for a series of liberal South American newspapers in the late 1940's.
