INTRODUCCION
Luego de haber sufrido un ataque primario y cuatro réplicas de paludismo, y aprovechando un período transcurrido en Roma, pude revisar con detenimiento la larga y enredada historia de la difusión de noticias sobre las virtudes de la Quina, cuya patria son los Andes de Colombia, Ecuador, Perú y Bolivia pero que originalmente fue conocida de la región de Loja en el Ecuador (Fig. 1).
La circunstancia del hallazgo y aceptación de la Quina, mejor conocida como cascarilla o corteza de Quina, constituye un episodio tan trascendental como oscuro de la historia de la medicina. Extraída de un género de árboles andinos, la Quina fue el único antídoto eficaz contra el paludismo durante los Siglos XVII, XVIII y XIX, hasta que aparecieron los compuestos sintéticos inspirados en la estructura molecular de la quinina. La adopción de la Quina significó un cambio de paradigmas en la medicina, pues los médicos tuvieron que abandonar las enseñanzas de Galeno, Hipócrates y Avicena sobre la causación humoral de las enfermedades. Por añadidura, la expansión del colonialismo europeo y del poblamiento en los trópicos del Viejo y Nuevo Mundo no hubiera sido posible sin este fármaco, que permitió poner coto al daño que los diversos tipos de malaria causan a la salud humana.
El "Padre de la Botánica" Carlos de Linneo bautizó el árbol de la Corteza de Quina como Cinchona en 1742 en su obra Genera Plantarum, en base a la memoria descriptiva leída en París en 1738 por el sabio y explorador francés La Condamine que un año antes había estudiado la planta en las montañas de Loja, y que la había llamado "Arbre du Quinquina" en francés. Para el nombre Cinchona Linneo se inspiró en cambio en un libro en latín publicado en 1663 por el médico genovés Sebastiano Bado, quien relataba que el ingreso de la Corteza de Quina en las prácticas curativas europeas se produjo cuando la esposa del Virrey del Perú, afectada de tercianas, fue sanada en forma milagrosa con esta amarga sustancia.
