Philipp Lenard
Physiker (geboren 1862 in Preßburg, gestorben 1947 in Messelhausen), Professor in Breslau, Aachen, Heidelberg, Kiel und ab 1907 wieder in Heidelberg, erhielt 1905 den Nobelpreis für Physik für seine bahnbrechenden Arbeiten über die Natur der Kathodenstrahlen. Im Widerspruch zu seiner wissenschaftlichen Kompetenz stand allerdings in den späteren Lebensjahren sein Einsatz für die "Deutsche Physik", die sich zum Ziel gesetzt hatte, alles "Jüdische', insbesondere die Relativitätstheorie, aus der Physik zu entfernen. Nachdem ihm 1935 durch die Nationalsozialisten die Lehrbefugnis entzogen worden war, emigrierte er über Paris nach Philadelphia. Estudió Medicina en esta misma ciudad y en Estrasburgo, obteniendo finalmente la licenciatura en su ciudad natal en 1878. En reconocimiento a sus trabajos, se le encomendó la tarea de dirigir el Instituto de Fisiología de Berlín. Más tarde accedió a la Cátedra de Fisiología de Marburgo y fue titular de la misma en Heidelberg, ciudad donde falleció en 1927. Descubrió los ácidos nucleicos Experimentó en distintas campos de la investigación científica, llegando a trabajar con el famoso micólogo Bary, y siendo discípulo y ayudante del fisiólogo Hoppe-Seyler. A este bioquímico alemán le fue otorgado el Premio Nobel en Fisiología y Medicina en 1910 por sus contribuciones en el desciframiento de la química de ácidos nucleicos y proteínas, descubriendo los ácidos nucleicos, bases en la molécula de ADN, que constituye la sustancia genética de la célula. Además, este premio es reconocimiento a su labor en el desarrollo de la química celular y sus trabajos sobre proteínas, incluyendo las sustancias nucleicas.

Pøihlásil na tøistapadesát patentù ve všech státech svìta a málokdo se dožil uplatnìní svých vynálezù jako právì on. Jeho vynálezy byly výsledkem práce Nobelových laboratoøí v Nìmecku, Francii, Skotsku, Itálii a Švédsku. Své objevy realizoval v devadesáti továrnách a firmách dvaceti zemí pìti kontinentù. Pocházel z rodiny švédského chemika a podnikatele, ale rodina záhy odešla do Ruska, kde jeho otec díky vynálezùm protipìchotních a vodních min dosáhl velmi rychle váženého postavení. Alfred Nobel je znám pøedevším jako vynálezce smutnì proslaveného dynamitu (1867), ale obrovskou senzaci zpùsobil také jeho testament, který napsal na sklonku svého života 27. listopadu 1895 v Paøíži. Vyøízení pozùstalosti se protáhlo až do roku 1900, nebo nìkteøí zákonní dìdicové se snažili zpochybnit její platnost, a potíže nastaly také kvùli Nobelovu skuteènému bydlišti a váhavému postoji institucí, které mìly podle závìti pøevzít odpovìdnost pøi udílení penìžitých odmìn. Založení Nobelovy nadace a pøedpisy pro instituce oprávnìné udìlovat ceny schválil švédský král 29. èervna 1900 a první Nobelovy ceny byly udìleny již o rok pozdìji.

    American chemist, born March 12, 1880, London; died 1952.

    Method of wound irrigation in which the wound is intermittently irrigated with Dakin’s solution. Biography: Henry Drysdale Dakin ”Dale and I proved that a hen is not a duck” Born in London, Dakin was the son of a Leeds iron and steel merchant and was brought up in Leeds. He studied organic chemistry at the Victoria University, which was later renamed the University of Leeds. After graduating Dakin went to London in 1901 and worked at the Lister Institute of Preventive Medicine, then the Jenner Institute. It was here that he first became interested in enzymes and studied the mode of action of lipase. He went to Heidelberg to collaborate with the chemist Ludwig Karl Martin Leonhard Albrecht Kossel (1853-1927), who became the 1910 Nobel Laureate in physiology or medicine
