How to use Bibtex
This document shows how to use Bibtex to create a bibliography in a LaTeX document by providing a simple example. To use bibtex you must
  • Create a database ( .bib ) file that describes the articles that you want to reference.
  • Specify the style and location of the bibliography in your LaTeX document.
  • Run latex and bibtex Why should you use Bibtex?
    • Let the style file worry about formatting the bibliography.
    • Avoid retyping the same references for your (or your friends) next paper (even if it is for a journal with a completely difference bibliography style).
    • It is more efficient.
    • It is not hard!
    Example Bibliography Database
Suppose we want to refer to two papers by Klitzing. Save the following as qhe.bib Notice that each article has a key (like klitzing:qhe ) which is used to cite the article.
    Example Latex file
Now the text of the paper goes in the file example.tex
    • Bibliography styles that can be used instead of prsty are abbrv alpha plain and unsrt . Many others are available on The Net
    • The before the prevents a line break before the
    Compiling the Example
    Now use the following commands
  • latex example
  • bibtex example
  • latex example
  • latex example (Note that as usual in LaTeX you do not need all these repetitions very time and that you only need to run bibtex if the references change).

Researchers from 5 universities win Nobel Prizes
The Washington Post Researchers at five American universities won the Nobel Prizes in physics and chemistry yesterday for their investigations of the behavior of matter at the very smallest scale. The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences awarded the physics prize to Robert Laughlin of Stanford University, Horst Stormer of Columbia University and Daniel Tsui of Princeton University for their discovery that under certain circumstances, electrons act like weird "quasiparticles" with only a fraction of the electrical charge that an electron is supposed to have. That work, the Nobel organization said, constitutes "a breakthrough in our understanding of quantum physics," the set of principles that describes how the fundamental units of matter and energy interact. In practical terms, it may improve understanding of microelectronic and optical devices.

University of California at Santa Barbara physicist Walter Kohn poses at his home yesterday. Kohn was awarded the Nobel Prize in chemistry. The chemistry prize went to Walter Kohn of the University of California at Santa Barbara and John Pople, a British citizen working at Northwestern University, for devising ways to calculate mathematically how chemical bonds among atoms form and change. The process is so difficult that Paul Dirac, one of the architects of quantum theory, observed in 1929 that they produced "equations much too complicated to be soluble."

6 July 1998 Modern-day Nobel Prize winning physicist will unveil campus memorial to Einstein A modern day Nobel Prize winning physicist will help the University of Nottingham pay a permanent tribute to one of his most distinguished predecessors on Friday July 10. Professor Klaus von Klitzing, from Stuttgart, will unveil a plaque in the Great Hall of the University's Trent Building to commemorate a lecture given there in June 1930 by Professor Albert Einstein. A special exhibition of press cuttings reporting the visit of the world-acclaimed scientist will be mounted in the Great Hall, together with other items associated with the visit, long prized by the University's Department of Physics. These include a blackboard with Einstein's chalked calculations, and the chalk he used on the occasion. The exhibition has been organised by Dr Michael Heath, a senior lecturer in the Department of Physics. Professor Lawrie Challis, Lancashire-Spencer Professor of Physics and a Pro-Vice-Chancellor at the University explained: "We have been looking for an opportunity to provide a permanent reminder of the Einstein lecture for some time. The visit of Professor von Klitzing, like Einstein a German Nobel Laureate in Physics, provided us with an ideal person to perform the unveiling ceremony". The chalk used by Einstein was `borrowed' by a Physics student many years ago but later returned to the Department. The University also has a clip of BBC film showing Einstein in the quadrangle of the Trent Building with the then principal of University College, Nottingham, Professor Hugh Stewart. Later in the day Professor von Klitzing, Director of the Max-Planck-Institute and the 1985 Physics Nobel Laureate, will receive the honorary degree of Doctor of Science at a degree ceremony in the University's Graduation Hall at the Sports Centre on the University Park Campus.
