Weather and rain have undone it again, And now you would never know There was once a road through the woods Before they planted the trees. It is underneath the coppice and heath, And the thin anemones. Only the keeper sees That, where the ring-dove broods, And the badgers roll at ease, There was once a road through the woods. Yet, if you enter the woods Of a summer evening late, When the night-air cools on the trout-ringed pools Where the otter whistles his mate. (They fear not men in the woods, Because they see so few) You will hear the beat of a horse's feet, And the swish of a skirt in the dew, Steadily cantering through The misty solitudes, As though they perfectly knew The old lost road through the woods . . . . But there is no road through the woods. Rudyard Kipling http://nobelprizes.com/nobel/literature/1907a.html

December 30 ~  Teach Us Delight Just So Stories "Teach us d e l i g h t in s i m p l e things." ~ Rudyard Kipling Born on this day in Bombay and educated in England , Rudyard Kipling (1865-1936) was a prolific writer of over 300 stories and poems . He is best known for his classic children's story The Jungle Book (1894, 1895), about a boy named Mowgli raised by wolves in the wilderness of India "The strength of the pack is in the wolf, and the strength of the wolf is in the pack," he wrote. The son of an artist, Kipling was a weaver of word magic , his vivid storytelling entranced. " Words are, of course the most powerful drug used by mankind," he said. Kipling was also a poet who celebrated British colonialism and patriotism, with Gunga Din (1892) and the controversial The White Man's Burden (1899), which asked the U.S. to take responsibility for developing the Philippines. He believed that the "chosen race" of Britain had the duty to civilize other races; this was "the white man's burden." In 1907, he became the first English author to receive the

RUDYARD KIPLING RUDYARD KIPLING was born in Bombay on December 30th 1865, son of John Lockwood Kipling, an artist and teacher of architectural sculpture, and his wife Alice. His mother was one of the talented and beautiful Macdonald sisters, four of whom married remarkable men, Sir Edward Burne-Jones, Sir Edward Poynter, Alfred Baldwin, and John Lockwood Kipling himself. Young Rudyard's earliest years were blissfully happy in an India full of exotic sights and sounds. But at the tender age of five he was sent back to England to stay with a foster family in Southsea, where he was desperately unhappy. The experience would colour some of his later writing. When he was twelve he went to the United Services College at Westward Ho! near Bideford, where the Headmaster, Cormell Price, a friend of his father and uncles, fostered his literary ability. , based on those schooldays, has been much relished by generations of schoolboys. Despite poor eyesight which handicapped him on the games field, he began to blossom. In 1882, aged sixteen, he returned to Lahore, where his parents now lived, to work on the
