African American Journey From Africa to America From Slavery to Freedom First Years of Freedom ... King's death
King, Martin Luther, Jr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
(1929-1968), an African American Baptist minister, was the main leader of the civil rights movement in the United States during the 1950's and 1960's. He had a magnificent speaking ability, which enabled him to effectively express the demands of African Americans for social justice. King's eloquent pleas won the support of millions of peopleblacks and whitesand made him internationally famous. He won the 1964 Nobel Peace Prize for leading nonviolent civil rights demonstrations. In spite of King's stress on nonviolence, he often became the target of violence. White racists threw rocks at him in Chicago and bombed his home in Montgomery, Ala. Finally, violence ended King's life at the age of 39, when an assassin shot and killed him. Some historians view King's death as the end of the civil rights era that began in the mid-1950's. Under his leadership, the civil rights movement won wide support among whites, and laws that had barred integration in the Southern States were abolished. King became only the second American whose birthday is observed as a national holiday. The first was George Washington, the nation's first President.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

The life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. As the father of the modern civil rights movement, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is recognized around the world as a symbol of freedom, peace, and nonviolent civil disobedience.
He was born January 15, 1929, the son of an Atlanta pastor. His grandfather was a founder of the Atlanta chapter of the NAACP. Growing up, King began to see the church the way his father did as a means for great social change for African-Americans.
During his studies at Morehouse College, the school's president (among others), encouraged King to do God's work in society by becoming a minister. He graduated from Morehouse as a minister in 1948 and went on to Crozer Theological Seminary in Chester, Pa., where he earned a divinity degree. Continuing his education, King went on to earn a doctorate in theology from Boston University in 1955. It was during his time at Boston University that he decided to accept the pastorate of Montgomery, Alabama's Dexter Avenue Baptist Church.
Just five days after the Rosa Parks refused to give her bus seat up to a white man, King was elected president of the Montgomery Improvement Association, which was formed by blacks who had decided to boycott Montgomery's bus system. King underwent personal trials as the result of his new position. He was convicted of trying to interfere with bus company operations and his house was bombed. As a result of his unwavering dedication, King became known nationally as a courageous leader and as an outstanding speaker. Montgomery's buses were desegregated after the Supreme Court declared Alabama's segregation laws unconstitutional.

Civil Disobedience
An essay written by Henry David Thoreau about his opposition to the Mexican-American War (1846-1848) and his willingness to spend a night in jail for refusing to pay a poll tax as a protest against the war. Dr. King read this essay while in school and would latter use many of Thoreau's ideas.
House Divided
Delivered by U.S. Senate Candidate Abraham Lincoln at the State Republican Convention held in Springfield, Illinois on June 16, 1858. Although Lincoln would lose the Senate race that year, this speech was important in his campaign for the Presidency two years later. "A house divided against itself cannot stand." I believe this Government cannot endure permanently half slave and half free.
Emancipation Proclamation

At the age of 15, he entered Morehouse College. At the age of 18, he was ordained a Baptist minister at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, the church led by his father and previously by his grandfather. After completing his studies at Morehouse, he entered Crozer Theological Seminary, graduating as valedictorian in 1951, and went on to earn a doctorate in theology from Boston University. During his theological studies he was exposed to the writing of Mohandas Gandhi, whose teachings formed the basis of Dr. King's philosophy of non-violence. In 1953, he married Coretta Scott with whom he had two sons and two daughters. In 1953, Dr. King became pastor of the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church in Montgomery, Alabama. In 1955, the arrest of Rosa Parks for refusal to give up her seat on a Montgomery city bus sparked the Montgomery Bus Boycott. Dr. King was called upon to lead the year-long boycott, during which he endured the first of many arrests for fighting unjust laws. Dr. King's stand against segregation and his commitment to working for non-violent social change catapulted him to national prominence.
