Heike Kamerlingh Onnes Click here for full size picture (b. Sept. 21, 1853, Groningen, Neth.d. Feb. 21, 1926, Leiden), Dutch winner of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1913 for his work on low-temperature physics and his production of liquid helium. He discovered superconductivity, the almost total lack of electrical resistance in certain materials when cooled to a temperature near absolute zero. From 1871 until 1873 Kamerlingh Onnes studied and worked at Heidelberg University, notably with the German physicists Robert Bunsen and Gustav Kirchhoff. Awarded a doctorate by the University of Groningen (1879), he taught at the Polytechnic School in Delft (1878-1882). From 1882 to 1923 he served as professor of experimental physics at the University of Leiden. Influenced by the work of Johannes van der Waals, Kamerlingh Onnes investigated the equations describing the states of matter and studied the general thermodynamic properties of liquids and gases over a wide range of pressures and temperatures. He founded (1894) and built up the Cryogenic Laboratory (now known by his name) that established Leiden as the low-temperature research centre of the world. From 1895 to 1906 he concentrated on perfecting cryogenic experimental techniques and studied metals and fluids at low temperatures. Having built an improved hydrogen-liquefaction machine two years previously, he succeeded in liquefying helium in 1908. Attempts to solidify helium were fruitless until Willem Hendrik Keesom, his student and successor as director of the Kamerlingh Onnes Laboratory, achieved the feat in 1926.

SUPERCONDUCTIVITY MILESTONES
Dutch physicist Heike Kamerlingh Onnes succeds in liquefying 4He. This allowed him to study the properties of many materials in the temperature range from 14K to 1K. It took till 1923 before this was acomplished in two other laboratories in Berlin and Toronto. So for 15 years the laboratory of Kamerlingh Onnes had the monopoly of doing research in this cold temperature range.
Dutch physicist Gilles Holst, an assistent of Heike Kamerlingh Onnes discovers superconductivity in (solid) mercury at temperature of 4 K. They used mercury because it was a metal which could be destilled and therefore easily be purified.
Kamerlingh Onnes is awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics for his research on the properties of matter at low temperature.
W. Meissner and his student R. Ochsenfeld discover the Meissner Effect.
Scientists report superconductivity in niobium nitride at 16 K.
Vanadium-3 silicon found to superconduct at 17.5 K.
Westinghouse scientists develop the first commercial niobium- titanium superconducting wire.
John Bardeen, Leon Cooper, and John Schrieffer win the Nobel Prize in Physics for the first successful theory of how superconductivity works.

wrote long letters to his family in Holland illustrated by numerous sketches. These letters afford us an insight into the colonial world of Indonesia and Eastern Asia at its apogee in the 1920's . The letters provide an added dimension by the glimpse we are given of the business empire of the famous 'Majoor der Chineezen' Tjong A Fie" in Medan. In December 1922 Harm and his Uncle Dolf left Amsterdam for Genoa where they boarded the liner 'Vondel' bound for the Netherlands Indies. It was the first time that Harm made the voyage but Dolf had made the journey fifteen times before.
They sailed via Port Said through the Suez Canal, Aden and Colombo to Sumatra. During the trip Harm wrote extensively to his family about life on board of the ship, illustrated by remarkably accurate sketches of his fellow passengers.

The Voyage of Harm Kamerlingh Onnes By DIRK A. BUISKOOL Recently there has been a revival in interest in travel journals about the former Netherlands Indies. Last year, Peter van Zonneveld's Naar de Oost appeared and we have also been witnessing a renewed interest in chronicles like Couperus' Oostwaarts and Du Perron's Scheepsjournaal van Arthur Ducroo . In the same period, the young artist Harm Kamerlingh Onnes joined his Uncle Dolf, a businessman in Sumatra, on a voyage to Indonesia. Harm Kamerlingh Onnes wrote long letters to his family in Holland illustrated by numerous sketches. These letters afford us an insight into the colonial world of Indonesia and Eastern Asia at its apogee in the 1920s. The letters provide an added dimension by the glimpse we are given of the business empire of the famous 'Majoor der Chineezen', Tjong A Fie in Medan. During the trip Harm wrote extensively to his family about life on board ship, illustrated by remarkably accurate sketches of his fellow passengers. Harm himself was particularly impressed by Mrs. Tip, enthraled by her delightful piano playing. Three weeks later the ship arrived in Belawan, the port of Medan, where Harm and Dolf disembarked.
