PACIFISTAS EN LA HISTORIA GANDHI Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi nació el 2 de Octubre de 1869 en Porbandar, India. Se convirtió en uno de los más respetados líderes espirituales y políticos del siglo XX. Gandhi ayudó a la liberación del pueblo hindú del gobierno colonial inglés a través de la resistencia pacífica, y es honrado por su gente como el Padre del la Nación India. Los indios llamaron a Gandhi Mahatma, que significa Alma Grande. A la edad de 13 años, Gandhi se casó con Kasturba, una niña de su misma edad. El casamiento fue arreglado por sus padres. Los Gandhi tuvieron cuatro hijos. Gandhi estudió leyes en Londres y volvió a la India en 1891 para ejercer su profesión. En 1893 aceptó un contrato de un año para trabajar como abogado en Sudáfrica. En esa época, Sudáfrica estaba controlado por los británicos. Cuando intentó reclamar sus derechos como ciudadano inglés fue atropellado, y pronto vio que todos los indios sufrían idéntico tratamiento. Gandhi se quedó en Sudáfrica 21 años luchando por los derechos del pueblo hindú.
