    The Nobel prizes
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made. In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

Abdel Nasser, Gamal (1918-1970) - Egyptian politician, prime minister 1954-56 and from 1956 president of Egypt (the United Arab Republic 1958-71). His nationalization of the Suez Canal 1956 led to an Anglo-French invasion and the Suez Crisis, and his ambitions for an Egyptian-led union of Arab states led to disquiet in the Middle East (and in the West). Nasser was also an early and influential leader of the nonaligned movement. Nasser entered the army from Cairo Military Academy, and was wounded in the Palestine War of 1948-49. Index

International Labour Organisation During World War II the Vichy government dissolved the CGT and arrested Jouhaux and turned him over to the Germans; he spent the rest of the war in a concentration camp. Returning to France, he was again secretary general of the reconstituted CGT, but in 1947 he split with the now Communist majority and established in 1948 the Force Ouvrière ("Workers' Force"), which stood between the Communists and Roman Catholic labour organizations. In 1949 he helped to found the International Confederation of Free Trade Unions, and on Nov. 5, 1951, he received the Nobel Peace Prize. ±¹Á¦³ëµ¿±â±¸(International Labour Organization/ILO)ÀÇ ¢¼³ÀÚ °¡¿îµ¥ ÇÑ »ç¶÷ÀÌ´Ù.

    Excerpts from his writings
Trotskyism versus Centrism in Britain - Part II
    THE MIDDLE OF THE ROAD
I f we were to leave aside the Revolutionary Socialist Party of Holland which stands under the banner of the Fourth Internationa1 we could assuredly say that the ILP of Britain stands on the left wing of the parties that adhere to the London-Amsterdam Bureau. In contrast to the SAP which has shifted recently to the right to the side of crassest petty bourgeois pacifism, the ILP has indubitably undergone a serious evolution to the left. This became definitely revealed by Mussolini's predatory assault upon Ethiopia. On the question of the League of Nations, on the role played in it by British imperialism, and on the 'peaceful' policy of the Labour Party the New Leader has perhaps carried the best articles in the entire' Labour press. But a single swallow does not make a spring, nor do a few excellent articles determine as yet the policy of a party. It is comparatively easy to take a 'revolutionary' position on the question of war; but it is extremely difficult to draw from this position all the necessary theoretical and practical conclusions.
