TEXT: U.N. RESOLUTION ON HUMAN RIGHTS SITUATION IN BURMA
(Deplores continued violations, calls for democracy)
United Nations, New York In a resolution passed during a plenary session December 12, the United Nations General Assembly deplored the continued violations of human rights in Burma (Myanmar) and strongly urged the Government of Myanmar to take all appropriate measures to allow all citizens to participate freely in the political process, and to accelerate the process of transition to democracy. The resolution also called upon the Government of Myanmar to release immediately and unconditionally detained political leaders and all political prisoners, and permit unrestricted communication with and physical access to Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and other political leaders by members and supporters of the National League for Democracy and to protect their physical well-being. The Government of Myanmar, the resolution said, should "ensure full respect for human rights and fundamental freedoms, including freedom of expression and assembly, the right to fair trial and the protection of the rights of persons belonging to ethnic and religious minorities, and put an end to violations of the right to life and integrity of the human being, to the practices of torture, abuse of women, forced labour and forced relocations, and to enforced disappearances and summary executions." The resolution also states that the U.N. General Assembly will continue its consideration of this question at its 52nd session.

The Nobel Peace Prize
October is the month when the names of the Nobel prize winners are made known to the world. The winners are the people who have proved worthy to be honoured that year for their significant contributions in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and work for peace. In addition, a Nobel memorial prize was established in 1968 ‹ The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel. Since 1969, this prize has been awarded at the same time as the five Nobel Prizes. Many other similar prizes are of course given by other institutions all over the world, but the Nobel prizes have maintained a unique position since the first one was awarded in 1901. There are many reasons for this, but probably one of the most important is the general trust in the thoroughness of the investigations and deliberations undertaken by highly qualified persons before each award is made In his will of 1895 Alfred Nobel stipulated that the scientific prizes and the prize for literature should be awarded by Swedish institutions. But the decision regarding the peace prize he left to a committee appointed by the Norwegian parliament, the Storting.

BACKGROUNDER ON THE
INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANIZATION
The International Labour Organization (ILO) was founded in 1919 as part of the League of Nations, and continues today as one of the expert agencies of the United Nations. With headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, the ILO functions on a tripartite basis: there is equal participation from representatives of governments, employers, and labour organizations. The ILO was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1969 for its work. Among its functions is the consideration of Complaints that a member state has failed to live up to the obligation to guarantee basic employment rights and principles found in a number of international Conventions of the ILO and the United Nations. These Conventions are documents setting out universal labour standards agreed to at international labour conferences of the ILO, and then ratified by member countries. Canada is a member of the ILO, and has specifically ratified many of its Conventions, including the basic 1948 Convention on Freedom of Association and Protection of the Right to Organize - which has been the basis of rulings upholding the right to strike and to free collective bargaining.

Created in 1919 by the Treaty of Versailles, the International Labour Organization (ILO) is mandated to promote social justice and respect for workers' rights throughout the world. It became a UN specialized agency in 1946. The ILO develops international labour conventions and recommendations that set the minimum standards to be followed in the areas under its mandate: freedom of association, the right to organize, collective bargaining rights, the abolition of forced labour, equality of opportunity and treatment, etc. It offers technical assistance in various sectors: vocational training and rehabilitation, employment policy, labour administration, labour law, staff relations, working conditions, management training, co-operatives, social security, labour statistics, and occupational health and safety. The ILO encourages the creation of independent employer and labour organizations, and facilitates their growth through training activities and advice.

DAW AUNG SAN SUU KYI RELEASED AFTER 19 MONTHS' HOUSE ARREST
Amnesty International warmly welcomes the release of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi,
leader of the main political party in Myanmar, the National League for
Democracy (NLD). She had been held under de facto house arrest by the State
Peace and Development Council (SPDC, the military government) since
September 2000.
"Her release is a very positive development in the human rights situation in Myanmar, and we hope that it will soon be followed by the releases of the hundreds of other prisoners held for their peaceful political views,"Amnesty said today. "The international community must continue to encourage the Myanmar government to make further improvements in the human rights and humanitarian situation there. At the same time the Burmese people need to have the opportunity to decide their own future. Freedom of expression is severely curtailed, and most Burmese are suffering from the effects of a

"The continued imprisonment of between 1200 - 1300 political prisoners, many of whom we believe are prisoners of conscience, held solely for their peaceful political activities, was one of the key issues discussed with the local authorities," Amnesty International said during a press conference held today in Bangkok, Thailand. The organization, which had been requesting access to Myanmar since 1988, welcomed the efforts made by the government officials in Myanmar to accommodate the delegation's requests and the frank discussions it held with Ministers, police and prison officials. During the visit, Amnesty International's delegation also met with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi - in her capacity as General Secretary of the National League for Democracy (NLD) and with members and supporters of the NLD. The delegates talked to representatives of various international organizations and the diplomatic and business communities as well as visiting detention facilities, including Insein Prison in Yangon and the Guard Ward at the Yangon General Hospital.
