Henry Dunant
founder of the Red Cross Henry Dunant, who was born in Geneva on 8 May 1828, came from a very devout Calvinist family that practised charity. After incomplete secondary schooling, he was apprenticed to a Geneva bank. In 1853, he travelled to Algeria to take charge of the Swiss colony of Sétif. He started construction of a wheat mill, but could not obtain the land concession that was essential for its operation. After travelling to Tunisia he returned to Geneva, where he decided to approach Napoleon III to obtain the business document he needed. At the time, the Emperor was commanding the Franco-Sardinian troops fighting the Austrians in northern Italy, and it was there that Henry Dunant decided to seek him out. Thus it was that he came to be present at the end of the Battle of Solferino, in Lombardy. Returning to Geneva, he wrote A Memory of Solferino , which eventually led to the creation of the International Committee for Relief to the Wounded, the future International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Dunant was a member and acted as secretary. He was now famous and was received by heads of State, kings and princes of the European courts. But his financial affairs were floundering and he was declared bankrupt in 1867. Completely ruined, he was in debt for almost a million Swiss francs of the time. As a result of the scandal which this bankruptcy caused in Geneva, he resigned from his post as secretary of the International Committee. On 8 September 1867 the Committee decided to accept his resignation not only as secretary but also as a member. Dunant left for Paris, where he was reduced to sleeping on public benches. At the same time, however, the Empress Eugénie summoned him to the Tuileries Palace in order to consult him on extending the Geneva Convention to naval warfare. Dunant was made an honorary member of the National Red Cross Societies of Austria, Holland, Sweden, Prussia and Spain.

The following organisations have generously agreed to assist Landmine Expedition 2001 in their specific areas of expertise, as well as in the field. Danish De-mining Group
At the time of departure in August, Danish De-mining Group had kindly offered us assistance in crossing into Afghanistan to visit its de-miners in the field. Since then, the events in the US have meant that all demining operations have been shut down, at least temporarily. Certain demining operations may however resume immediately after the military campaign finishes, and we continue to monitor events in the hope that it may be possible to enter Afghanistan after the conflict ends. Handicap International
One of the 6 founding organisations of the International Campaign to Ban Landmines, Handicap International will support us in visiting its operations in the Balkans, the Middle East, Central and Far East Asia. Handicap International has three priorities: Reinforcement of local capabilities, support for development and integration initiatives and prevention of handicap-inflicting conditions.
Danish Church Aid has agreed to aid us in Kosovo by allowing us to visit its staff and missions. Its work includes clearing mines and acting as an advocate in reallocating cleared land to the rightful owners or people in need.

Nobel Peace Prize
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Nobel Peace Prize is one of five Nobel Prizes bequested by the Swedish industrialist and inventor Alfred Nobel . Four of the five prizes are awarded in Stockholm each year, but Nobel had stipulated in his will that the Peace Prize could not be awarded in Sweden. Instead the Norwegian capital of Oslo was chosen as the award site and a Norwegian Nobel Prize Committee is appointed to select the laureate for the Peace Prize. According to the will of Alfred Nobel the prize should be awarded "to the person who shall have done the most or the best work for fraternity between the nations, for the abolition or reduction of standing armies and for the holding and promotion of peace congresses".

Its mission, based on the Geneva Conventions of 1949: «to assure protection and assistance to victims of international and non-international armed conflicts, and internal troubles and tensions.» An impressive activity, both in its effectiveness... and discretion. UN Round-up Young People Involved in Humanitarian Issues Since 2000, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in close cooperation with Lithuanian Red Cross has been implementing a public information project specifically focused on spreading the knowledge of refugee needs, their protection and reception standards. Within the framework of this work, at the beginning of 2001 both partners initiated the Youth Summer School Project, the target of which is Lithuanian youth organizations. The project was meant to observe two important events: the 50th anniversary of the signing of the 1951 Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, and the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, which was held in September in Durban, South Africa. The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the International Committee of the Red Cross financially supported the initiative. The summer school, hosted by Klaipëda on 2-12 August, gathered the members of the Lithuanian Red Cross Youth, the Lithuanian Students Union ‘Ateitis’, the Lithuanian Rifle Union, Lithuanian Liberal Youth, Christian Democrat Youth, the Labour Youth Union, students from the Oriental Centre at Vilnius University and Klaipëda Christian College. It was opened by Cihan Sultanoglu, UN Resident Coordinator, and Rimantas Taraðkevièius, Mayor of Klaipëda.
