These are such spectacular sculptures and on such a grand scale! I would love to have any of them in my yard, assuming I could afford one. All of his designs are larger than life and my favorite is "Spirit of the Wind". The site also has pages for Kempf's bronze sculptures, and paintings. I personally wasn't impressed with his painting style, but liked both his bronze and wind sculptures. The history of Starr Kempf stated that he grew up in a Swiss Mennonite community not far from the Amish country in Ohio. Intrigued, I dug a bit deeper for some background on the Mennonites and how they differ from the Amish. Mennonites History of the Mennonites
I have often wondered how the Mennonites got their name. Thanks to this site, I now know this and other interesting facts. This site covers just about everything having to do with Mennonites, including news, congregations, other Mennonite links, and the church structure.

Red Cross
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an independent private humanitarian institution acting as a neutral intermediary in armed conflicts. Basing its actions on the International Humanitarian Law whose initiator it is, the ICRC provides protection and assistance to the victims, no matter whether they are prisoners-of-war or interned civilians, wounded or sick, displaced persons or population in occupied territories. The ICRC can offer its services to the victims of internal disturbances and tension, which are not provided for by the 1949 Geneva Conventions. ICRC delegates visit and improve the situation of political detainees. In order to successfully fulfill its tasks, the ICRC has a considerable administrative and operative structure in its Headquarters in Geneva. Delegates of ICRC work in the hottest and most problematic regions of the world.
There is a Central Tracing Agency at the ICRC whose activities include receiving, registering, conveying information to the relatives of victims of armed conflicts; searching for missing persons; reuniting-separated families; issuing of different documents and references, e.g. certificates of captivity, etc.

Statement delivered by Chris Lamb, Head of Humanitarian Advocacy Department, International Federation, to the Interparliamentary Conference, 105th Session, Havana
5 April 2001
President,
It gives me great pleasure to have the honour to address this 105th Interparliamentary Conference. I speak on behalf of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, which I am representing jointly with the Cuban Red Cross and its Secretary-General and Legal Adviser.
The Centenary date also falls, very appropriately, at the end of the International Year for Volunteers. We are particularly pleased that this IPU Session has had the opportunity to hear an address on volunteers and volunteerism by Ms Sharon Capeling-Alakija, the Executive Coordinator of UN Volunteers.
The International Federation, representing as it does one of the world's largest and most significant volunteer networks, is working especially closely with UNV to realize practical and beneficial results from the International Year.

Pick a Fact Blood Services Community Outreach Disaster Relief Fundraising History Preparedness Volunteerism For over 90 years, the American Red Cross-Southeastern Michigan Chapter (established 1909) has served the people of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. This is combined with well over a century of humanitarian service from the American Red Cross (established 1881) and the International Red Cross (established 1863). Here are some quick facts about the Red Cross. It takes six whole blood donors to make one dose of platelets. Platelets are critical for burn victims, open-heart surgeries and some chemotherapy and leukemia patients. The American Red Cross develops mission-related programs that meet community needs. This winter, the Southeastern Michigan Chapter through donations from the community distributed 8,620 blankets to 78 homeless shelters in Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. This is the second-largest distribution of blankets by the Chapter in its history. The American Red Cross was the very first Red Cross and Red Crescent Society to integrate disaster relief into its services in 1881. The Red Cross created the ability to respond to disasters of all kindsin war and peacetime. The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) later encouraged all Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies to integrate Disaster Relief into their operations.

its Symbol, and Clara Barton
In 1859, Swiss businessman Henri Dunant (1828-1910) visited the northern Italian battlefield of Solferino and was deeply affected by the impact of war on the lives and dignity of both combatant and civilian. The memoir he wrote, A Memory of Solferino , inspired the 1863 founding of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). Near the end of his book Dunant writes: "But why have I told of all these scenes of pain and distress, and perhaps aroused painful emotions in my readers? Why have I lingered with seeming complacency over lamentable pictures, tracing their details with what may appear desperate fidelity? It is a natural question. Perhaps I might answer it by another: Would it not be possible, in time of peace and quiet, to form relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in wartime by zealous, devoted and thoroughly qualified volunteers?" The aim of Dunant's proposals was twofold: on the one hand, to create in all countries voluntary "relief societies for the purpose of having care given to the wounded in wartime " and, on the other, to formulate an "international principle, sanctioned by a Convention inviolate in character, " which would serve as the basis and support for the relief societies.

History of the Red Cross
The Red Cross Movement, with over 100 million members worldwide, is the largest humanitarian aid organisation in the world today. It was founded by Swiss business man, Henri Dunant, following the battle of Solferino, northern Italy, in 1859 which resulted in over 40,000 dead or wounded. Dunant found himself in the middle of the battle between the French forces of Emperor, Napoleon III and the Austro-Hungarian Empire which occupied parts of Italy at that time. Horrified by the anguished cries of the war-wounded left to suffer and die on the battlefield, many of whom pleaded for the coup de grace, Dunant organised help from the nearest village, Solferino. The wounded, from both sides were ferried to makeshift hospitals in people's homes and barns.

Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (ICRC)
The work that is carried out by the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement (ICRC) through its network of collaborators covering 175 countries as well as some very remote areas in the world and bringing assistance and hope to the afflicted.
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is an impartial, neutral and independent organization whose exclusively humanitarian mission is to protect the lives and dignity of victims of war and internal violence and to provide them with assistance. It directs and coordinates the international relief activities conducted by the movement in situations of conflict.
On 24 June 1859, during the War of Italian Unification, Italian forces clashed with Austrian troops near the small town of Solferino in northern Italy. Henry Dunant was eyewitness of the results of this battle. Thousands of soldiers were lying unattended. Dunant and a local woman helped the wounded by giving water and dressing their wounds.
Dunant could not forget what he had witnessed and wrote a book about the misery. In 1862 his work, entitled "A Memory of Solferino" was published. Henry Dunant's book was a huge success and it was translated into many European languages.

History
Four Nobel peace prizes
Swedish industrialist Alfred Nobel, who died in 1896, provided in his will for a fund, the interest of which would be used every year to "reward persons whose activities were of the greatest benefit to humanity". In 1901, the first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Henry Dunant , founder of the Red Cross, whose life was devoted mainly to humanitarian cause. Living in poverty in a poorhouse at Heiden (Canton of Appenzell, Switzerland) in 1901, Dunant bequeathed the prize money to charitable causes. The International Committee of the Red Cross , subsequently, was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1917 and 1944, as tributes to its humanitarian activities during the two World Wars. In 1963, the ICRC and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies won the prize on the occasion of the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement's 100th anniversary. History of the Red Cross
The Red Cross is one of the oldest extant humanitarian organisations in the world, with the largest voluntary membership of any organisation with 100 million members in 170 different countries. It has won the Nobel Peace prize four times The Red Cross movement was founded by a Swiss man Henri Dunant after the battle of Solferino in Northern Italy, where over 40,000 soldiers died or were wounded. He was appalled by the suffering of the wounded and dying on both sides. He organised local people in to groups to help the wounded regardless of their nationality. This event scared him, and caused him to write the book "A Memory of Solferino" in 1862. He expressed the idea of forming "relief societies for training volunteers to care for the wounded in wartime …based on some international Principle". In 1863 Henri Dunant and four other citizens of Geneva formed the International Committee of the Red Cross I C R C. The first society was formed in Wurtemburg that year. In 1864, one year later, the Geneva Convention for the improvement of the condition of the wounded in armies in the field was formed and by 1867 16 countries had signed up agreeing to it. The movement spread quickly across Europe and America showing the success of Dunant s idea. The movement also spread into the Islamic world but they used the emblem of the Red Crescent as they associated the cross with Christian beliefs. The two symbols now have equal status and meaning. In 1901 Henri Dunant was awarded the Nobel Peace prize for his efforts.

In 1866 Alfred Bernhard Nobel of Sweden produced what he believed was a safe and manageable form of nitroglycerin called dynamite. He established his own factory to produce it but in 1864 an explosion at the plant killed Nobel's younger brother and four other workers. Deeply shocked by this event, he now worked on a safer explosive and in 1875 came up with gelignite.
By the time Nobel died on December 10th 1896, he had obtained a massive fortune. He left instructions that most of his money should be used to endow annual Nobel prizes. The very first awards were made in 1901 on the fifth anniversary of Nobel's death. The first winner was Henri Dunant , the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the main figure behind the Geneva Convention
The Nobel prizes are now awarded to those who have contributed most to the common good in the areas of Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Literature and Peace (a sixth for Economics, which is financed by the Swedish National Bank, was first awarded in 1969). The prizes have a large cash award and are given to organizations such as the United Nations peacekeeping forces, which received the Nobel peace prize in 1988 as well as individuals such as Nelson Mandela.
