Some Aspects of the Mission of the International Committee of the Red Cross
The International Committee of the Red Cross, being an institution unique of its kind, I feel I should say a few words about what it is and what its activities are. It is a private, independent body, composed only of Swiss citizens. At the present time there are eighteen members who were recruited by co-optation, that is to say invited by the Committee itself, to become members. The International Committee is, therefore, completely national by composition, but international in its mission. This is not a contradiction. The International Committee is admitted on the territory of belligerents for the sole reason that its members are citizens of a small country, with no political ambitions but with a tradition of complete neutrality. Governments can, therefore, have full confidence in its impartiality. The International Committee has no material power. It has no arms and would not even know how to resort to diplomatic maneuver. But its apparent weakness is offset by its moral authority. For just one hundred years now, governments have considered the existence of the International Committee useful.

Nobel Prize for Peace in both 1917 and 1944. It shared another Nobel Peace Prize with the League of Red Cross Societies in 1963, the year of the 100th anniversary of the ICRC's founding. The International Committee of the Red Cross was formed in response to the experiences of its founder, Jean-Henri Dunant , at the Battle of Solferino in 1859. Dunant witnessed thousands of wounded soldiers left to die for lack of adequate medical services. Soliciting help from neighbouring civilians, Dunant organized care for the soldiers. In 1862 he published an account of the situation at Solferino; by 1863 he had garnered so much support that the Geneva Society for Public Welfare helped found the International Committee for the Relief of the Wounded. In 1875 this organization became the International Committee of the Red Cross. The ICRC is now one component of a large network including national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. (The Red Crescent was adopted in lieu of the Red Cross in Muslim countries.) The governing body of the ICRC is the Committee, consisting of no more than 25 members. All the members are Swiss, in part due to the origins of the Red Cross in Geneva but also to establish neutrality so any countries in need can receive aid. The Committee meets in assembly 10 times each year to ensure that the ICRC fulfills its duties as the promoter of international humanitarian law and as the guardian of the Fundamental Principles of the Red Cross: "humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality."

The international committee of the red cross received three times the nobel PeacePrize, ie in 1917 and 1944, in recognition of its humanitarian activities

Four Nobel Peace Prizes
The four Nobel Peace Prizes awarded to the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, are a world recognition of its activities, its principles and guiding ideals.
The First Nobel Peace Prize, 1901, was awarded to Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross, who devoted his life to humanity and to alleviating human suffering. The International Committee of the Red Cross received three times the Nobel Peace Prize, i.e. in 1917 and 1944, in recognition of its humanitarian activities during the two world wars, and again in 1963, together with the League (now International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies) on the occasion of the centenary of the Movement.

About Us History International International The Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement began almost 140 years ago when on a hot June day in 1859 Henry Dunant, a Swiss banker travelling on business in northern Italy, witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino a horrifying and bloody conflict between 300,000 soldiers from Imperial Austria and the Franco-Sardinian Alliance. In 1862 Dunant published his recollection of this experience as A Memory of Solferino and remained convinced that the power of humanity could be engaged to alleviate suffering on a global scale. Vulnerable people exist in all societies, he argued, and should be afforded the same care and consideration. Some of the men wounded in battle lay where they fell for days bleeding and tormented by thirst, hunger, flies and burning heat. The dead were thrown into huge pits, along with others seriously injured but alive nonetheless. Amid the stench and sounds of pain and anguish, thieves moved from person to person, robbing both the wounded and the dead. Moved by the sight of the appalling injuries suffered by these young men, Dunant rallied villagers from the town of Castiglione della Pieve to assist and tend the wounded. These townsfolk were to become the first volunteers of the Red Cross. Would there not be some means, during a period of peace and calm, of forming relief Societies whose object would be to have the wounded cared for in time of war by enthusiastic devoted volunteers fully qualified for the task. Such Societies could even render great service during epidemics or at times of disaster of flood and fire; the philanthropic motives underlying their vocation would bring them into action immediately wherever and whenever they could usefully intervene.

On World Red Cross Day this year, the Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement is launching a global campaign to reduce HIV/AIDS related stigma and discrimination. World Red Cross Day 2002 August August 4-10 is National Missing Persons Week. This year, the International Tracing Service of Australian Red Cross is joining non-government tracing organisations, community groups associated with families and friends of missing people and police services around Australia to raise awareness of people who have lost contact with family friends and loved ones. 13th August is the anniversary of the formation of Australian Red Cross at Government House, Melbourne in 1914 by Lady Helen Munro-Ferguson, wife of the Governor-General. On our birthday we celebrate the remarkable achievements of Australian Red Cross members and volunteers in suburbs and towns across the country - the heart and soul of the organisation.

Thorvald Stoltenberg, President of the Norwegian Red Cross, presented UN Secretary General Kofi Annan and his wife Nane with the "Torstein Dales" memorial prize.
"Poverty and inequality are root causes of conflict and obstacles to peaceful development. The Red Cross Red Crescent struggles for peace every day through our network of millions of volunteers", said Federation President Juan Manuel Suárez del Toro.
"Economic exploitation creates vulnerability. Inequalities in terms of trade, in people's access to labour markets, to health and education, influence their possibility to make a livelihood. The consequences are on the agenda of the International Federation," pointed out Didier Cherpitel in the Nobel Prize Symposium.

Nobel turns 100: A century of honoring top achievers
In 1921, the Royal Swedish Academy awarded Alfred Einstein the Nobel Prize in physics for his experiments with the photoelectric effect. (CNN) A century ago, the first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded jointly to Jean Henry Dunant, the founder of the International Committee of the Red Cross, and Frederic Passy, the founder of a French peace society that laid a foundation for the United Nations. Today, as the Nobel committee prepares to announce its 100th awards, the organizations seeded by those two men are more viable than ever. So is the work of dozens of other Nobel laureates recognized over the decades in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine, literature and economics. Albert Einstein, Madame Curie, Martin Luther King Jr., Linus Pauling, Isaac Bashevis Singer, Nelson Mandela and Samuel Beckett are some of the well-known recipients of Nobel prizes. While the prizes are among the most prestigious awards in the world, they are not without controversy. Nobel laureates were often at the forefront of dramatic change in the 20th century, which saw an accelerated rate of scientific discoveries, along with two world wars and tremendous social upheaval.
