Introduction
The contribution of each research group is like one piece of colored glass in a stained glass window. Viewed together, these colorful pieces form a radiant picture of our understanding of living systems.
Photo: Donovan Marks for National Cathedral M any scientists across the country are united by one chief desire to improve our understanding of how life works. Whether they gaze at or grind up, create or calculate, model or manipulate, if their work sheds light on living systems, it may well receive financial support from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS). NIGMS is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), an agency of the United States Government that is one of the world's leading supporters of biomedical research. As the "General" in its name implies, NIGMS has broad interests. It funds basic research in cell biology, structural biology, genetics, chemistry, pharmacology, and many other fields. This work teaches us about the molecules, cells, and tissues that form all living creatures. It helps us understand and possibly find new ways to treat diseases caused by malfunctions in these biological building blocks. The Institute also supports training programs that provide the most critical element of good research: well-prepared scientists.

Fractal Developer Wins Wolf Prize, Science Historian is Elected to Congress, Robert W. Holley - Obituary
By Ron Kaufman Date: March 22, 1993, pp.22
  • Fractal Developer Wins Wolf Prize
  • Science Historian Is Elected To Congress
  • Robert W. Holley - Obituary Benoit B. Mandelbrot, a fellow at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., will be awarded the 1993 Wolf Prize in Physics by the Israeli-based Wolf Foundation on May 16. Since 1978, the Wolf Foundation has been granting $100,000 prizes for individual achievements in agriculture, chemistry, mathematics, medicine, physics, and the arts. This year, the prizes will be presented by Israeli President Chaim Herzog at the Knesset building in Jerusalem. "I never liked mathematics by itself. I didn't like its dryness or abstraction," Mandelbrot says. "So I spent all my life being a mathematician without being a member of the core mathematics community. I've always done things my own way, which is why all my work has been used by many different disciplines." In addition to gaining satisfaction from the cross-disciplinary utility of his work, Mandelbrot says, he is extremely pleased that fractals are easily understood by high school and college teachers.

Robert W. Holley For 7 years Holley's team engaged in a kind of molecular cartography. Their working terrain, bundled up inside a tiny yeast cell, was the tRNA molecule. The molecule itself is a chain of smaller organic molecules that can be compared to a string of pearls. Each pearl is strung along a strand composed of a sugary substance called ribosephosphate. Several organic bases combine with the molecules of ribosephosphate to form the pearls, which are called nucleotides. How the nucleotides are arranged along the strand is important because RNAs faithfully follow the DNA molecules' genetic blueprint in assembling the order of amino acids. The resulting chain of hundreds or even thousands of aminoacids is a protein. Arrangement of the nucleotides along the strand also determines the structure of the tRNA molecule. Holley's team determined the tRNA's structure by using two enzymes to split the molecule into pieces. Each enzyme split the molecule at location points for specific nucleotides. By a process of "puzzling out" the structure of the pieces split by the two different enzymes, then comparing the pieces from both enzyme splits, the team eventually determined the entire structure of the molecule. Since the molecule transports the amino acid alinine to its appropriate protein-building site, it was designated "alinine-tRNA."
