Alfred Day Hershey, pioneer in DNA research
Alfred Day Hershey, Ph.D., a Nobel laureate who spent the first 16 years of his career at the School of Medicine, died Thursday, May 22, 1997, at his home in Syosset, N.Y. He was 88. Hershey joined the Washington University Department of Bacteriology and Immunology in 1934 after receiving a doctorate in chemistry from Michigan State College. Inspired by department head Jacques J. Bronfenbrenner, he began to work with bacteriophages viruses that infect bacterial cells. At a time when few people were studying the chemical or genetic properties of viruses, Hershey developed ways to recognize and analyze viral genetic traits, believing that studies with such a simple form of life might reveal basic hereditary principles. In 1946, he produced the first convincing evidence that two strains of a virus can exchange genetic material if they infect the same bacterial cell. Hershey moved to the Genetics Research Unit of the Carnegie Institution at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory in New York in 1950. Two years later, he and geneticist Martha Chase discovered how bacterial viruses infect cells and provided a critical piece of evidence for the view that DNA, not protein, was the genetic material. They labeled the protein coat of one batch of phages with radioactive sulfur and the DNA core of another batch with radioactive phosphorus. Tracking the labels during infection, they observed that most of the protein label stayed outside the bacterial cell and could be removed with a blender, whereas the DNA label entered the bacterium and reappeared in progeny phage. This experiment proved that genetic information is in DNA, not protein, as some researchers had proposed.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel

Dr. Alfred Day Hershey
1969 Nobel Laureate in Medicine , Mr. Hershey was born on Dec. 4, 1908 at 515 E. Mason St. Owosso, MI, to Robert D. and Alma (Wilber) Hershey. He graduated from Owosso High School in about 1925 and later graduated from Michigan State University. Mr. Hershey became a geneticist and in 1969 was the recipient of a Nobel Prize for Medicine and Physiology for the discovery concerning the replication mechanism and the genetic structure of viruses. Dr. Hershey and two other fellow scientist claimed the Prize. He was affiliated with the Carnegie Institution of Washington, Long Island, New York, NY Alfred Day Hershey graduated from Washington University Carnegie Institution of Washington, Dept. of Genetics, Cold Spring Harbor in 1950. He shared the Nobel prize with Max Delbruck and Salvador Luria. Dr. Hershey was working on a little-studied organism called bacteriophage with phage researcher J.J. Bronfenbrenner at Washington University in St. Louis when he received a letter from a German scientist at Vanderbilt University, Max Delbruck . Delbruck said he had been reading Hershey's papers and was quite interested. He and Salvador Luria , had been studying phage themselves, and found interesting results. They invited Hershey to Nashville to see their lab and do some experiments. In 1943, Hershey formed the third point in the nucleus of the nascent American phage group. Hershey tells the story that in the late 1940s he and Luria both received job offers from the Carnegie's Department of Genetics at Cold Spring Harbor and Indiana University. Hershey was a quiet sort who mostly liked to be in lab doing experiments. Luria on the other hand, loved the excitement and stimulation of university life. Hershey went to CSH in 1950.

Through this invention became very wealthy from its profits. After he dies, in his will he wrote that some of his fortune should be used to endow annual Nobel prizes. He left approximately nine million dollars for these prizes. The prizes are awarded yearly to people whose work most benefited humanity. There are six different Nobel Prizes. They are the Nobel Peace Prize, the Nobel Prize in Physics, the Nobel Prize in Chemistry, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine , the Nobel Prize in Literature, and finally the Nobel Prize in Economic Sciences. He shared the prize with Francis Harry Compton Crick and Maurice Hugh Frederick Wilkins for their discovering of the molecular structure of DNA and its significance for information transfer in living material. DNA takes the shape of double helix resembling a ladder made of a pair of nitrogen containing nucleotides. They emerged the field of molecular biology into their work to understand the structure.
