Then there are magicians, and you can have no idea how they do it. If you are not familar with the famous Feynman yet, you are going to be introduced to one of the most brillant and interesting scientific characters of this twentieth century.
If you are familar with Feynman, you will realize that the short biography below does not do justice to this brillant and interesting character.
To begin, Richard P. Feynman was one of the greatest physicists and scientist of the twentieth century.
Richard P. Feynman was the great teacher, theoretical physicist, and outspoken character of this twentieth century. A Nobel prize winner, Feynman was given this high honor for his work in quantum electrodynamics (QED). He shared this honor in 1965 with Julian S. Schwinger and Shinichiro Tomonaga for combined efforts in developing and laying down the fudamentals of this study of the interactions of light and matter.
Feynman's other contibutions to the field of physics include the famous Feynman diagrams, which map subatomic particle interactions in a simple, easy to understand, manner. Feynman could have also easily received a number of Nobel prizes for his work in the reformulation of quantum physics, his theory of superfluid helium, and other developments of quantum field theories.
The beginning of quantum electrodynamics began with Feynman convinced that an electron could not interact with its own field. The foundations of modern particle physics is based on Feynman's work. For example, Feynman's theories behind quantum electrodynamics, which explains the electromagnetic force in nature, have been applied to all other forces strong, weak, and gravitational. In particular, the particle theories of the nucleus have diagrams and theories based directly upon Feynman's quantum electrodynamics view. Mediating particles, quark interaction, and subatomic particle decays all have their roots in Feynman's methods and theories of QED.

"Sta scherzando Mr. Feynman!"

Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman Richard P. Feynam This book, among most of the other Feynman books, is really a collection of lectures the Nobel-prize winning physicist gave at one time or the other in the past 50 years. Lecture isn't quite the right word, they're well developed anecdotes about interesting things (exploits) Feynman has done or experienced, in childhood or as a student or professor later on. Some of the embellishment doesn't always ring true: I'll have to read one of his biographies (James Gleick's Genius is currently waiting on my shelf) to see if there's any history to some of it. Completely true or not, the book is extremely readable (the conversational style owing to its transcript nature helps also) and entertaining. Almost anything he talks about gives me the impression that I could easily do it myself, like breaking into safes or coming up with Q.E.D. theory. He's modest about his real work but sometimes comes off sounding like an ass when talking about tricks he played on people or other mean and-or funny things he did. I read another Feynman book a few years ago, and a few of the stories are the same (like the Los Alamos safe-cracking one) and probably most everything here is present in some other collections.

    Dr. Richard P. Feynman
Richard Feynman studied at MIT and received his doctorate from Princeton in 1942. His work while still an underclassman developed a new approach to quantum mechanics using the principle of least action. He replaced the wave model of electromagnetics of Maxwell with a model based on particle interactions mapped into space - time.

After the Second World War Feynman went to Cornell University where he became one of the major figures in the development of quantum electrodynamics (QED). During this period he also devised his own approach to quantum mechanics called the 'path integral' or 'sum over histories' approach. This has since been applied to quantum field theory and is now the standard formalism in many areas of the subject.

In this hour of Science Friday, we'll talk with playwright Peter Parnell about his new play Q-E-D. The play takes a look into the life of physicist Richard Feynman, known for (among other things) his distinctive personality, Nobel Prize (1965, for "fundamental work in quantum electrodynamics, with deep-ploughing consequences for the physics of elementary particles") problem solving skills, and bongo-playing.
What are the challenges of putting science on the stage? We'll talk about it and we'll talk with a friend of Mr. Feynman's about the challenges of being true to Mr. Feynman's memory. Call in with your comments and questions at 1-800-989-8255, and share your opinions online in our
