Abstract Single molecule detection by confocal fluorescence techniques opens up new accesses to medical diagnostics. It allows for a sensitive detection of particles present at extremely low titers as well as for an efficent screening of large varieties.
The basis of the method and problems of its application to virus and prion infections are discussed. The results also suggest a new way of quantifying Alzheimer's disease prior to clinical symptoms. Professor Manfred Eigen Molecular Diagnostics: Viruses, Prions and Alzheimer's Disease
Curiculum vitae
Manfred Eigen has always captivated the attention of his contemporaries by his ability to generate scientific insights from the latest findings in physics and molecular biology; however, unlike those whose propositions border on the fanciful, his ideas never digress from sound scientific knowledge. Initially his thoughts on molecular evolution, and thus the development of life on earth, centered around self-replicating molecules that existed about 3.8 billion years ago. From the very beginning these molecules must have possessed such diverse structures that they were subject to the process of natural selection. Many honors - in addition to the Nobel Prize and the Paul Ehrlich Prize already mentioned above - have been conferred on him. These include thirteen honorary degrees, numerous medals and memberships in national and foreign academies. Eigen is ranked as one of the leading internationally renowned scientists studying the molecular mechanism of evolution in nature.

Nobel Prize Winning Chemists Manfred Eigen The Nobel Prize In Chemistry 1967 Manfred Eigen was born in Bochum on May 9, 1927,the son of the chamber musician Ernst Eigen and his wife Hedwig, nee Feld. Eigen began his work on the problem of fast ionic reactions in solution in the period 1951-1953. encouraged to do so by the ultrasound absorption measurements carried out by his colleagues Konrad Tamm and Walter Kurtze. During the following years he developed a series of measuring techniques involving times down to the order of a nanosecond. At the same time he was appointed to the Scientific Council of the German Federal Republic. Eigen's scientific development is reflected in the ranges from the thermodynamics properties of water and aqueous solutions, and the theory of electrolytes, through thermal conductivity and sound absorption, to fast ionic reactions. In the years 1953-1963 followed the description of a series of novel measuring techniques used for the study of very fast reaction in the range from one second to one nanosecond. The gap between the region of classical reaction kinetics and spectroscopy was thus closed.

    The Nobel Prize within History
Since 1901 the foundation established by the Swedish inventor and businessman Alfred Nobel identifies worldwide outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, medicine or physiology, and (since 1968) economics, as well as in literature: It also honors an outstanding commitment to peace. The exhibition examines this history using three primary themes: the Nobel Prize and the First World War, the Nobel Prize at the time of the Third Reich, and the Nobel Prize in the post-war world.
    The Goettingen Nobel Laureates
The Laureates and the City of Goettingen
At four multi-media computers, information can be called up from a CD-ROM made for the exhibition. They let you find the research facilities and residences of the scientists on a digitized map of Goettingen, using the mouse. In the city itself, one encounters the great names everywhere. Memorial plaques hang on the sides of buildings where the laureates once lived. Not less than eighteen streets are named after Nobel Prize winners. Programs designed to support the dialogue between science and the public take place in the Otto Hahn Center in Goettingen's former train engine workshop.

    1965. Robert Burns Woodward

A Short History Boenhoeffer died suddenly in 1957 and Carl Wagner took on the position of institute director. Wagner was a "classical" physical chemist. He added solid state physics and kinetics of phase separation to the already broad research program, and at the same time generously supported the other activities in the institute. Manfred Eigen was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry 1967 for his work on relaxation kinetics and devoted his interests increasingly to biological problems. Wagner perceived this as the beginning of a new era in the development of the institute and resigned as its director, this function being then assumed by Eigen. In 1965 the Max Planck Society established an Institute for Spectroscopy with Albert Weller as director, also on the premises of the former AVA. However, the latter organization had been "resurrected" as the DLR Otto Creutzfeldt ), 'Biochemische Kinetik' (
