Dr. Domagk with the chemist, Dr. Josef Klarer
and Dr. Fritz Mietzsch in 1947 Professor Dr. Gehard Domagk (1895-1964) was one of the most eminent pioneers in the history of medicine. He made a revolutionary contribution to the treatment of infections by introducing the chemotherapeutic era. In the early 1930's, Professor Dr. Gerhard Domagk discovered at the Bayer research laboratories that particular sulphonamides had an antibacterial effect. His discovery, published in 1935, opened a new era in medicine. After thorough pharmacological testing, the sulphonamide agent with the name "Prontosil" was marketed in 1935. Prontosil from Bayer was the first medicine on the market made of sulphonamides. The clinical successes of the sulphonamide therapy drastically reduced death caused by infectious diseases . This made the pioneering work of Domagk nothing less than a revolution in medicine, which was honored in 1939 with the Nobel prize.

C. B. van Niel shows that photosynthetic bacteria use reduced compounds as electron donors without producing oxygen. Sulfur bacteria use H2S as a source of electrons for the fixation of carbon dioxide. He posits that plants use water as a source and release oxygen.

Wendell Stanley crystallizes tobacco mosaic virus and shows that it remains infectious. However, he does not recognize that the infectious material is nucleic acid and not protein. Together with Northrop and Sumner, Stanley is awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1946.
George Beadle and Edward Tatum jointly publish a paper on their experiments using the fungus Neurospora crassa
Salvador Luria and Max Delbruck provide a statistical demonstration that inheritance in bacteria follows Darwinian principles. Particular mutants, such as viral resistance, occur randomly in bacterial populations, even in the absence of the virus. More important, they occur in small numbers in some populations and in large numbers in other cultures. With Hershey, Delbruck and Luria are awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology in 1969.

1926 to 1950 Setting the scene Flying develops at a rapid rate after the use of aircraft in the First World War is so successful. In 1927 Charles Lindbergh makes the first nonstop solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean in 33.5 hours. The late 1920s sees the beginning of the Great Depression, a worldwide economic slump that continues into the early 1930s. The slump leads to massive unemployment, and about 20% of the British population is estimated to be on a very poor diet. In Germany Adolf Hitler's National Socialist party come to power, promising to solve Germany's economic and political problems. After re-arming Germany, Hitler is increasingly daring, until the invasion of Poland leads to a declaration of war between Britain and Germany in 1939. For the next six years all the efforts of Britain and her allies go into providing weapons, aircraft and munitions for the fight against the Nazis in Europe and against Japan in the Far East.. After the war there is a tremendous feeling of optimism, but in those countries most involved in the fighting, society has undergone a fundamental change. In the UK, women have worked throughout the war in the munitions factories, and on the land - doing jobs traditionally done by men. As a result, women do not want to return to the old days when they were regarded almost as their husband's property.

From 1901 onwards Nobel Prizes have been awarded in Chemistry Physics Physiology or Medicine Literature (66) and Peace (46), and since 1969 also in Economics (17) to 391 scientists, economists, peace activists/organisations and writers from today's EU member states or candidate countries. During their journey across Europe, our two Spring Students, Caroline and Marlene , have also tried to find out, who they were, when they were awarded the prize, which countries they came from and where they lived when they received the prize. In the list below you will find reference to the latter in brackets. All links below go to the marvelleous site of the Swedish Academy . So let me invite you to follow our two Spring Students on another, this time not political but scientific, trip across our continent. Comentario editorial
Historia del Premio Nobel
1931 Otto Heinrich Warburg. Alemania. Kaiser-Wilhelm-Institut (Actualmente Max-Planck-Institut) für Biologie Berlin-Dahlem, Alemania. 1883-1970.

1932 Sir Charles Scott Sherrington.

Chapter 2
"I will lift up mine eyes to the pills." Malcolm Muggeridge describing the age of modern medicine in a 1962 newspaper column
For those living in industrialized nations Muggeridge's paean to the power of pills is no hyperbole. The 20th century has seen an almost complete transformation in our understanding and treatment of infectious disease. Successful medications have reconfigured our approach to most bacterial and fungal infections while effective vaccines have been developed against infections such as smallpox, measles, typhoid fever, rubella, diphtheria, tetanus, yellow fever, pertussis and polio. In developing nations the story has been tragically different. Separated by poverty, geography, scarcity of antimicrobials and a lack of political will on the part of governments whose priorities may not be public health, individuals living in such areas have long been consigned to the health care margins. Nevertheless, the fact that these tools against infection exist and are still effective constitutes the health care miracle of the last 500 years. Apart from smallpox vaccines, quinine and penicillin, few of these breakthroughs have been accidental discoveries, stumbled upon by chance. Instead, they are the result of dedicated scientific effort and vast amounts of money, time and human labour expended over decades.

http://www.issx.org/hisjune.html
History of Xenobiotic Metabolism Reduction The process of enzymatic reduction was responsible for one of the greatest advances in human medicine-and a significant change in how drug metabolism was perceived. The history began in 1863 with E. Lautemann who had been fascinated by the ease with which quinic acid could be reduced to benzoic acid in the test tube and decided to examine it's metabolism in humans. He and two of his colleagues each ingested 8 g of calcium quinate and collected their urines. They found conjugated benzoic acid in all three urine samples. History of Drug Metabolism- Year 2000 Review Felix Hoppe-Seyler published the first study indicating the ability of the body to reduce nitro groups to the corresponding amines. He isolated indoxylsulfate following administration of o-nitrophenylpropiolic acid. The initial reaction in the conversion was presumed to be the reduction of the nitro group to a primary amine. In 1893 Karplus published an account of the conversion of picric acid (2,4,6 trinitrophenol) to 2-amino-4,6 dinitrophenol a reaction that had been postulated earlier by A.Rymsza.
