    History
At the end of the 19 th century, the German annexation of Alsace and Lorraine led France to lose the Chemistry School of Mulhouse, which was at that time the best French school in chemistry. In 1878, Charles Lauth, one of its teachers, tried to get from the authorities the creation of a "Grande Ecole". Its vocation was to alleviate the lack of leading-edge chemistry executives in France and to provide its students an extensive scientific education thanks to which they can adapt themselves to the fast technologic changes of the industrial revolution.
The Ecole de Physique et de Chimie Industrielles of Paris was founded in 1882, and was named ESPCI in 1948. Since the creation of the school, its founders have laid emphasis on the pluridisciplinarity of the education. This will is illustrated by the introduction of Biology in the education in 1994.
The free ESPCI's education allows students from various social backgrounds to benefit from the education of the ESPCI.

NEWS For immediate release March 9, 1999 No. 174 CHAPEL HILL Dr. Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, the 1991 Nobel laureate in physics who has been hailed as the "Isaac Newton of our time," will speak at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill March 24. His lecture, "Bubbles, Foams and other Fragile Objects," is intended for a general audience. It will take place at 7 p.m. in the Tate-Turner-Kuralt Building auditorium, located at 301 Pittsboro St. on the UNC-CH campus. The public is invited to meet de Gennes at a reception preceding the lecture at 6:30 p.m. in the lobby. Both the reception and lecture are free and open to the public. De Gennes also will address undergraduate and graduate science students March 25 in 207 Venable Hall. His 4 p.m. lecture, "Naive Ideas on the Dynamics of Long Chains: DNA Entry in Electroporated Cells" is geared toward a scientific audience, but anyone may attend. Like Newton, the 17th-century scientist who established a set of basic laws explaining motion and gravity, de Gennes is known for reducing a broad range of complex phenomena to a few simple truths.

    WORLDWIDE UNIVERSITIES NETWORK
International collaboration is increasingly seen as an important indicator of success in the higher education sector and in February 2000 an alliance of eight UK and American universities was announced. The Worldwide Universities Network is being developed to take advantage of the growing global markets in teaching and research. The initial members of the alliance were the White Rose universities (Leeds, Sheffield and York) together with Southampton in the UK, and California (at San Diego), Pennsylvania State, Washington (at Seattle) and Wisconsin-Madison in the USA. The Universities of Manchester and Illinois at Urbana-Champaign have subsequently joined the Network. The universities have agreed to collaborate initially in research, postgraduate degree programmes and continuing professional development. They plan to produce common courseware, establish joint PhD supervision and develop uniform benchmarking standards.

9/16/98: Nobel Laureate in Physics To Deliver Silliman Lectures at Yale
New Haven, Conn. A French physicist who has been hailed as the "Isaac Newton of our time" for his ability to reduce a broad range of complex phenomena to a few simple truths will deliver the first Silliman Lectures of the 1998-99 academic year at Yale University. Pierre-Gilles de Gennes, who won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1991 for his discovery of rules describing how some materials shift from one state of being to another, will speak on the theme "Granular Materials: From Rice to Snow" during his visit to campus Wednesday-Friday, Sept. 23-25. He will present three lectures: "Granular Materials: An Overview of the Battlefield between Mechanics and Physics" on Wednesday; "Avalanches: A Tragedy in Three Acts" on Thursday; and "The Physics of Sand Dunes and the Problem of Desertification" on Friday. All three talks will be held at 4 p.m. in Davies Auditorium, Becton Center, 15 Prospect St. Each will be preceded by a tea at 3:30 p.m. in the Becton faculty lounge. Both the talks and teas are open to the public free of charge. De Gennes has been a professor since 1971 at the College de France and director since 1976 of the Ecole de Physique et Chimie, both in Paris. He is considered the world's foremost authority on soft matter, and has been credited with putting France's research at the forefront of scientific inquiry in this area.
