Christian de Duve Christian de Duve received the "Nobel Prize in Medicine or Physiology" in 1974, and in that same year he founded the International Institute of Cellular and Molecular Pathology (ICP). Since then he has not only remained remarkably active in science and in promoting the ICP, but has also devoted much of his time, talents and enthusiasm to the advancement of scientific knowledge and to kindle the sparks that ignite investigative careers. At present Ch. de Duve is founding member of the Board of Directors of the ICP. Christian de Duve
Christian de Duve, who is of Belgian nationality, was born at Thames-Ditton (UK) on October 2, 1917. He studied medicine at the University of Louvain (Doctor of Medicine in 1941), after which he specialized in chemistry at the Nobel Institute, Stockholm and in biochemistry at the Department of Biological Chemistry, Washington University Medical School, St. Louis (USA). From 1947 to 1951 he was lecturer in physiological chemistry at the Catholic University of Louvain, later being appointed professor at the same university and head of the Department of Physiological Chemistry. In 1962 he was appointed Professor and Head of the Department of Biochemical Cytology at the Rockefeller University, New York (USA).
De Duve started his scientific career researching into diabetes and carbohydrate metabolism. Further studies led him to the discovery of the lysosome.
De Duve has published a great number of articles, and has sat on the editorial boards of the 'Journal of Theoretical Biology' and the 'Journal of Cell Biology' among other journals. He is still one of the editors of 'Subcellular Biochemistry' and of 'Preparative Biochemistry'. De Duve is an honorary member of various societies (e.g. the American Academy of Arts and Sciences), has received honorary degrees from the Universities of Turin, Leyden and Sherbrooke (Canada), and has received several awards including the Nobel prize for medicine in 1974 with Claude and Palade.
The concept of the cell and the discovery of cell organelles, such as the nucleus, the mitochondrion, and the myofibril, belong to the domain of the cell biologist. The study of their biochemical properties came much later. Another cell organelle, the lysosome, however, was discovered by a biochemist using biochemical techniques: Professor Christian de Duve. For this work he was awarded the Dr H.P. Heineken prize in 1973. As with many scientific discoveries, chance and the unpredictable played a significant part in the discovery of the lysosome.

Christian deDuve Lectures on the Origins and Evolution of Life at UCSD
by Casey Luskin
Graduate Student, Earth Sciences, Scripps Institute for Oceanography
On Thursday, April 5th, Nobel laureate Christian de Duve gave a free public lecture at UC San Diego, sponsored by the NASA Specialized Center of Research and Training (NSCORT / Exobiology) at the Scripps Research Institute and Scripps Institution for Oceanography. De Duve, who won the Nobel Prize for medicine in 1974 for discoveries concerning the structural and functional organization of the cell, titled his lecture, "Reflections on the origins and evolution of life." This was the 3rd talk sponsored by NSCORT2 years ago Freeman Dyson spoke on the origins of life. De Duve's lecture was very interesting, as he started off by saying that most of his life he's been a research biochemist, but only in the last few years has he become an "armchair" theorist with regards to the origins of life. De Duve is convinced that all of the necessary origins of life prebiotics could have come from outer space. He very briefly flashed an overhead as evidence for this claiming that the 1968 Murchison meteorite contains amino acids were found in the same proportions as they are produced by Stanley-Miller type experiments. He thus concluded that Stanley-Miller-experiment type processes were going on in outer space and producing amino acids in meteorites.

Premios Nobel de Fisiología y Medicina
Premio Nobel
