According to Tibetan tradition, he was recognized at two years old as the reincarnation of the 13th Dalai Lama. These spiritual leaders are the human manifestation of the Bodhisattva of Compassion, who chooses to reincarnate to serve the people. Dalai Lama translates in English to Ocean of Wisdom. While studying Buddhist philosophy at the age of 16, he was called upon to assume the powers of head of state following aggression from China in 1950. In 1959 he was forced into exile in Dharamsala, India, now the capital of the Tibetan Government in Exile.

An Uprising ... Terminology explained A Boy Named Lhamo Dhondrub
On July 6 1935 in Taktser, a tiny settlement overlooking a broad valley in northeastern Tibet, the 14th Dalai Lama was born. The last of five children, Lhamo Dhondrub was born into a family of poor peasant farmers. The 13th Dalai Lama had passed away earlier in the same year. Shortly afterwards, the Regent of Tibet journeyed to a sacred lake called Lhamo Lhatso. According to Tibetan tradition, the lake was a window to the future. The Regent had a vision: he saw a turquoise and gold roofed three-storey monastery and a house with turquoise tiles. Two years later, a number of high lamas and dignitaries set out from Lhasa, the capital of Tibet. Travelling in different directions, they carried with them the knowledge of the secret vision. They hoped it would guide them to the Dalai Lama's successor, his next incarnation. Lama Kewtsang Rinpoche of the Sera Monastery headed a party that travelled east. In Amdo, Tibet's northeastern province, they found a monastery matching the Regent's vision. A house with turquoise tiles was close by; it was the home of Lhamo Dhondrub.

Many people know that Tibet is under Chinese colonial rule. But few are aware of the extensive human rights violations which are being perpetrated against the Tibetan people. Restrictions are placed on religious expression; monasteries and nunneries are attacked, nuns and monks are expelled and imprisoned. Tibetan children are forbidden to learn their own language or study their own culture!! Political dissidents are silenced through imprisonment, torture and death. Women are forced to undergo abortions and sterilizations. A deliberate cultural genocide is being perpetrated right now in Tibet, and the gentle, peaceful Tibetan culture is under a very real threat of becoming extinct if the world community does not act RIGHT NOW.
It is important for us, to US citizens, and everyone, because Tibet is a model of non violence and compassion. China has absolutely no regard of human rights. It has access to enormous amounts of uranium in Tibet. China sells the uranium to Iraq, Iran, Syria, and Pakistan. Chinas military is rapidly developing. The Tibet-India border is a very important geopolitical border. By the year 2010 China will become the 2nd largest economy. The current trade deficit with China is 35+Billion Dollars. AFL-CIO confirmed at least 12 Chinese Army corporations in the USA. Profits of these corporations directly support Chinas military. Numerous factories in China are staffed by prisoners.

People Of Peace Are The Poetry Of Mother Earth. People who express beauty and lyrical action from a vision of spirit in practicing mindful inner peace, who nurture peace between self and others, who work for peace between all others and live in peace with mother earth, taking from her sparingly in gratitude, giving back to her with generosity. Nobel Prize for Peace Acceptance Speech
given by Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet
As I publish the following speech, we are nearing the end of the year 2002. Tibet is still not free. The Dalai Lama and the Tibetan people still live in exile from their country. On December 10th, 1989, in Oslo, Norway, Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet accepted the Nobel Prize for Peace. This is the speech given in 1989, these are his words and this is his wisdom of compassion, love, freedom and nonviolence: Your Majesty, Member of the Nobel Committee, Brothers and Sisters: No matter what part of the world we come from, we are all basically the same human beings. We all seek happiness and try to avoid suffering. We have basically the same human needs and concerns. All of us human beings want freedom and the right to determine our own destiny as individuals and as peoples. That is human nature. The great changes that are taking place in the world, from Eastern Europe to Africa, are a clear indication of this. In China the popular movement for democracy was crushed by brutal force in June this year. But I do not believe the demonstrations were in vain, because the spirit of freedom was rekindled among the Chinese people, and China cannot escape the impact of this spirit of freedom sweeping in many parts of the world. The brave students and their supporters showed the Chinese leadership and the world the human face of that great nation.

PSU Hosts The World Peace Conference Six Nobel Peace Prize winners took part in a World Peace Conference hosted by Portland State University in May 2001 dovetailing with a three-day visit by the Dalai Lama. The conference aimed at exploring how spirituality can pave the path to world peace. "We wanted to take advantage of the Dalai Lama's visit," said Gary Alan Spanovich, executive director of the conference. The Dalai Lama, who won the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1989, visited Oregon to take part in lectures, workshops and public events in his honor. He spoke about his approach to world peace at a luncheon at the Hilton Hotel in Portland at the same day of the conference but was not able to join the panel discussion at PSU because he was scheduled to meet at that time with members of the local Tibetan community. Instead the Venerable Lhakdor, a religious assistant to the Dalai Lama joined the Nobel Peace laureates. The laureates that participated in the conference are Adolfo Perez Esquivel, architect, sculptor and Nobel Peace Prize winner in 1980 for championing human rights in Argentina and other Latin American countries; Robert K. Musil, executive director of Physicians for Social Responsibility, which shared the 1985 Nobel Peace Prize with International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War; William F. Shulz, executive director of Amnesty International, winner of the 1977 Nobel Peace Prize; Betty Williams, a 1976 Nobel winner for brokering the peace accord in Northern Ireland and Dr. Helen Caldicott, co-founder of International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.

New York, 29 May 1997 Of course my English is very poor, and I'm also getting older. So it is something difficult. I'll try to speak in my own English. Brothers and sisters, I'm extremely happy to participate in this Nobel Peace Forum. Some time ago, in Berlin, on one occasion, the former president of Costa Rica, Arias, when I briefly saw him, told me of this idea. I fully supported it. Now I'm very happy to see that his idea has materialized. I'm also very pleased to see that many other Nobel laureates fully support it. I think it's very encouraging. Also to see so many young people here, it seems that you are responding. Great to see that. (cheers) (applause) So that is what I often tell people. Anyway, from certain aspects, at the end of the century, one can almost certainly say it is a century of violence. Now we have to make every effort so that next century is a century of dialogue. (applause) So now, everybody is here, especially the young people, and also the media, I think more people will get this idea. Please try to make a contribution to each one. From there, from such efforts, then there is a real possibility of transformation of humanity.

THURMAN Watching CNN recently, I was suddenly transported into the Dalai Lama's study and meditation room in Dharamsala at 4 a.m. I have never joined him there myself at that hour, though I've known him for more than 30 years. So I was fascinated as he meditated and said his morning prayers, yawning occasionally, hiding nothing from the camera. At one point the filmmaker off-screen asked him what he was doing. He said, "Shaping motivation!" What? "Shaping my motivation for the day." The Dalai Lama, at 64, after six decades of study, practice and intellectual and spiritual attainment, was reinforcing his altruistic motivation to make his daily thoughts, words and deeds more beneficial to all beings. m o r e Gurus and Godmen Ever the mystical East, Asia in the 20th century produced a colorful array of godmen who attracted millions of followers, brought down governments and even had songs written about them by The Beatles

Volume 2 Issue 5 October-December 1998 Dalai Lama denies
any statement is forthcoming

THE Dalai Lama denied any statement was forthcoming on breaking the impasse over Tibet issue with the Chinese leadership, while talking to a group of Tibetan settlers in Washington D.C. on 7 November. The denial comes in the wake of heavy speculation that the Tibetan leader would make a major conciliatory gesture to China during his nine-day stay in the United States starting 4 November.
“There is going to be no statement,” the Dalai Lama said, emphasising on the need to discuss the matters internally with China first before making them explicit through public announcement. “It is more important to hold discussions with the Chinese government over the differences that block our desire for negotiations.”
Any public statement, made before China is taken into confidence and consulted with, might fail their confidence in the Tibetan sincerity for negotiations, His Holiness added.
The Tibetan leader said the two preconditions for talks — that Tibet and Taiwan are integral parts of China — laid by Chinese President Jiang Zemin in June in the United States made it binding on him to issue an official response. But there are problems, His Holiness added. “It is not easy to address the two preconditions. A lot of considerations have to be made in dealing with them. Specially the second one which involves many historical, legal and other factors,” His Holiness explained. The second precondition entails that His Holiness recognise Taiwan as a part of China.

China keeps up attacks on Dalai Lama
A buddhist nun called China's comments about the Dalai Lama as "an insult to Buddhism" In this story: 'Separating the motherland' 'Spiritual mission' RELATED STORIES By staff and wire reports BEIJING, China China has fired new verbal shots against the Dalai Lama renewing accusations that the exiled Tibetan leader was collaborating with pro-independence forces on Taiwan. A commentary by the official Xinhua news agency Sunday said the Dalai Lama's tour was "a political visit" driven by separatist motives he shares with officials in Taipei. The report came shortly before the Dalai Lama appeared alongside Taiwan Vice President Annette Lu at a gathering in Taipei where they issued a joint call for peace and understanding from Beijing. Vice President Lu, whom China has branded "scum of the nation" for describing Taiwan and China as "close neighbors but distant relatives," thanked the exiled spiritual leader for braving China's disapproval and showing concern for Taiwan.

And every one of us has a responsibility to act as if all out thoughts, words, and deeds matter. For, really, they do. Our lives have both purpose and meaning." - from Ethics for the New Millennium by Dalai Lama As I was reading Ethics for the New Millennium, I found it to be very interesting and thought provoking. In the book, The Dalai Lama calls for a non-religious spiritual revolution, a social revolution that would result in a world in which all in existence is treated with the respect and dignity inherently deserved. He discusses the causes and cures for the societal problems of today in a very convincing manner. This is a book that I will read many times. The Dalai Lama is the spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhism and formerly the ruler of Tibet. He is believed to be a reincarnation of the Buddha and the 14th Dalai Lama. It is said that when he dies, his soul will enter the body of a newborn boy. After being identified by traditional tests, the boy will become the new Dalai Lama.
