Nobel Prizes in Neuroscience
Part I
The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious honors that a scientist can be awarded. This article summarizes of the Nobel Prize-wining work by people who changed our view of the nervous system through their research and discoveries.

"in recognition of their work on the structure of the nervous system"
Camillo Golgi (Italy) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Santiago Ramon y Cajal (Spain) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
Cajal and Golgi shared the Nobel Prize for their tremendous contribution to our understanding o the anatomical structure of the brain. Interestingly, they both had different theories about the nature of contacts between nerve cell. Despite this, each scientists produced a large body of work and refined techniques histological techniques impacted future generations of neuroanatomists. Some of this work is described in a previous feature article

"for his work on the dioptrics of the eye"
Allvar Gullstrand (Sweden) Nobel Fnd. NPIA
This price was award for the furtherance of our understanding of the optic principles of the eye and its function in vision.

"for his work on the physiology and pathology of the vestibular apparatus"

(26 linear feet) Ms. Coll. 48 American Philosophical Society 105 South Fifth Street * Philadelphia, PA 19106-3386 Table of contents Abstract Working on bacterial viruses in 1945, Seymour S. Cohen offered the first systematic exploration of the biochemistry of virus-infected cells and of how viruses multiply. His subsequent research included delineating the phenomenon of thymineless death, developing derivatives of ara-A compound, working on RNA synthesis, studying the effects of polyamines on metabolic systems, and studying plant viruses (including viral cations). Much of his research has contributed to the chemical treatment of cancer and viral infections.
Background note: Seymour S. Cohen in his laboratory, ca.1963-1971? Seymour Stanley Cohen was born on 30 April 1917 in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Boys' High School in Brooklyn and then received a B.S. from the City College of New York in 1936. He was married in 1940 to Elaine Pear and later had two children, Michael and Sara. Cohen studied biochemistry with Erwin Chargaff at Columbia University, where he received his PhD in 1941. He had an Abbott Laboratory Fellowship from 1940 to 1941. In his thesis, "The Thromboplastic Protein from Lungs," Cohen focused on the isolation of thromboplastin from beef lung and the chemical and immunological characterization of particles of lipoprotein containing RNA.

Women Inventors of World Renown
A large number of women inventors have received world recognition through various international awards. Some of the most prestigious of these awards, and of widest geographical scope, are the Nobel Prize, induction to the National Inventors Hall of Fame (U.S.A.) and the WIPO Gold Medal for Inventors.
Nobel Prize
Ten women, from a total of 448 scientists, have been awarded a Nobel Prize in the sciences (chemistry, physics and physiology or medicine), from 1901 to 1997. Among them, Marie Curie is the only person up to date to have twice received a Nobel Prize in the sciences, each time in a different field of specialization: in Physics, in 1903, and in Chemistry, in 1911.
