Nobel Jews As the Nobel Prize marks its centennial,
Jews constitute 1/5 of laureates
Throughout the 20th century, Jews, more so than any other minority, ethnic or cultural group, have been recipients of the Nobel Prize perhaps the most distinguished award for human endeavor in the six fields for which it is given. Remarkably, Jews constitute almost one-fifth of all Nobel laureates. This, in a world in which Jews number just a fraction of 1 percent of the population. It is ironic that this international recognition has rewarded Jewish accomplishment in the same century that witnessed pogroms, the Holocaust, and wars that killed millions for no other reason than that they were Jewish. Certainly the Nobel Prize was not awarded to Jews because they were entitled to it, were smarter or better educated than everyone else, or because they were typically over-represented in the six fields honored by the award. Rather, all Nobel laureates have earned their distinction in a traditionally fierce competition among the best and the brightest, although politics and controversy have not infrequently followed in the wake of the Nobel.

Three Oberlin graduates have received the Nobel Prize. The recipients include Robert Millikan (1923), Roger Sperry (1981), and Stanley Cohen (1986).
The Nobel Prize is a truly international prize, global in scope and mission. Past prizes have acknowledged major contributions to mankind's progress and constitute distinct markers of important trends. The main reason for the prestige of the prize today, however, is the lasting importance laureates have made in their contributions to human development.
Robert Millikan , who graduated from Oberlin College in 1891, won the Nobel Prize in physics for his work on electrical charges and photoelectric effects.

Oberlin College Today
Diversity at Oberlin College
Oberlin students come from all around the United States and the world. This diversity is part of what makes Oberlin special. When Oberlin College admitted as students both men and women, it became the first coeducational college in the United States. The open-admissions policy "irrespective of color" proclaimed in 1835 meant that Oberlin College would also have black and white students studying together. Oberlin College was unique in its willingness to educate men and women, blacks and whites. Today Oberlin College still accepts students without any restriction by gender, race, or religion. Living and studying with people from different backgrounds provides valuable learning experiences .
Oberlin's Nobel Prize Winners
Oberlin College provides an outstanding education and its students have made outstanding contributions to the world. For example, three Oberlin College graduates have won the world-famous Nobel Prize. These are awards that are given out one a year in a worldwide competition to people who have done outstanding work in the fields of medicine, chemistry, physics, economics, literature, and the promotion of world peace. The Nobel Prize is named after a Swedish chemist, Alfred Nobel, who invented dynamite. When he died in 1896, Mr. Nobel's will set up the Nobel Prize. In 1923, Robert Millikan, class of 1891, was the first Oberlin graduate to win the Nobel Prize. He won the physics honor for his work that helps us understand about electrical charges and photoelectric effects. In 1982, he had a U. S. postage stamp issued in his memory.

Steps on the Road to Biotechnology 1859 Charles Darwin publishes On the Origin of Species , establishing the Theory of Evolution and its mechanism, natural selection. Evidence presented in the Origin of Species challenged both the accepted scientific and religious views of Western culture that had been taught for centuries. The first edition sold out on the day it was published. Theologians quickly labeled Darwin "the most dangerous man in England"... Yet, after reading it, Darwin's friend and colleague T. H. Huxley had a different reaction: "How extremely stupid not to have thought of that."
