J'ai honte !, par Claude Cohen-Tannoudji J'ai été pendant une dizaine d'années professeur à l'université Paris-VI avant d'être élu au Collège de France en 1973. Je continue depuis cette date à donner des cours de troisième cycle dans cette université. Tous mes travaux de recherche ont été et continuent à être effectués dans un laboratoire associé à Paris-VI. Je me sens donc directement concerné et interpellé par une motion récente du conseil d'administration de cette université demandant à l'Union européenne de ne pas renouveler le contrat cadre de coopération universitaire entre l'Union européenne et Israël et je m'estime en droit de donner mon opinion. J'ai honte pour ces collègues qui osent jeter un anathème sur d'autres collègues à cause de leur nationalité. J'ai honte pour ces collègues qui, devant un conflit douloureux où deux peuples souffrent cruellement et quotidiennement, choisissent de diaboliser l'une des deux parties plutôt que d'essayer de les rapprocher. J'ai honte pour ces collègues qui font semblant d'ignorer que les universités israéliennes sont des lieux de débat démocratique, où des voix fortes et nombreuses n'hésitent pas à s'élever pour s'opposer à la politique de leur gouvernement, où les contacts sont maintenus envers et contre tout avec les homologues palestiniens pour qu'une véritable collaboration puisse s'instaurer le jour où un accord de paix sera enfin réalisé. J'ai honte pour ces collègues qui font semblant d'ignorer qu'en pénalisant et en isolant ainsi les universitaires israéliens, ils donnent en réalité un coup de poignard dans le dos à la paix.

05 Novembre 1999 - SOCIETE ALLEGRE PRIVE LA FRANCE DE SOLEIL Assemblée. Le budget de la Recherche et des technologies Abandon du synchrotron de troisième génération Soleil, au profit d'un projet britannique avec Wellcome Trust. Cette décision a conduit le prix Nobel Claude Cohen Tannoudji à démissionner du Conseil national de la science présidé par le ministre. En adoptant dans la nuit de mardi à mercredi le budget de la Recherche et des technologies une majorité de députés (les communistes ont voté contre tout en approuvant le budget sur l'enseignement supérieur) a provisoirement donné raison à Claude Allègre. Un ministre qui a réussi à se mettre à dos une partie de la communauté scientifique en s'opposant, en particulier, au projet Soleil qui devait voir le jour à Orsay (Essonne) pour remplacer un Lure (Laboratoire pour l'utilisation du rayonnement électromagnétique) vieillissant. Jusque-là, la communauté scientifique française reste à la pointe de la maîtrise du rayonnement synchrotron qui, produit par des accélérateurs circulaires d'électrons, est utilisée par de très nombreux chercheurs mais également une vaste palette d'industriels pour étudier la structure de la matière. Elaboré depuis dix ans par le CEA et le CNRS, le projet Soleil (Source optimisée de lumière aux énergies intermédiaires du Lure) vise à doter la France d'une machine de troisième génération pour satisfaire des besoins scientifiques et industriels en forte croissance. Ce projet avait été soutenu par les précédents gouvernements et approuvé par tous les comités d'experts nationaux et internationaux qui l'avaient évalué. Hier encore le Conseil scientifique du CNRS s'est étonné du sort réservé à Soleil. Après un débat national sur l'intérêt de l'implantation géographique de ce synchrotron, la communauté scientifique s'était mise d'accord sur l'Ile-de-France où, à une forte majorité, les élus avaient voté la part des crédits relevant de leur responsabilité. Ce qui, s'ajoutant aux engagements du CNRS et du CEA bouclait le montage financier.

On aurait pu penser qu'il aurait été question de la paix au Proche-Orient. Mais non ! Pas du tout ! Il s'agit de regonfler les effectifs d'étudiants scientifiques dans les universités, de soutenir les recherches scientifiques d'avant-garde, de faire en sorte que la science ne soit pas dévoyée par des usages répréhensibles (comme si les scientifiques avaient montré dans le passé une quelconque efficacité sur ce plan !) ou d'aider les pays en voie de développement pour que ceux-ci ne deviennent pas les foyers de fanatismes aveugles. Bref, du vent ! Plus sérieusement, l'article vise à détourner notre attention de l'incroyable violence de la réalité, de l'évolution catastrophique du conflit sur le terrain. Il nous entraîne dans une sorte de discussion policée sur le rôle des universitaires, qui serait en soi porteur de valeurs morales. Ce faisant il disqualifie d'emblée une initiative qui ne se contente pas d'en rester au niveau de phrases lénifiantes sur les vertus d'un dialogue imaginaire dans le cadre d'un conflit imaginaire, mais qui tente d'avoir une prise sur une réalité complexe et difficile. En effet, les troupes de l'armée israélienne ont (provisoirement ?) mis un terme au dialogue.

Phillips and Claude Cohen- Tannoudji TBA - 10/15 By Terence Nelan ABCNEWS.com Oct. 10 Canadian Foreign Affairs Minister Lloyd Axworthy is one of the people associated with the fight against land mines (Reuters) A group that opposes land mines won the award today and had been one of the favorites. But it is always difficult to predict what the Nobel committee will do. This year, a record 130 individuals and groups had been nominated. 1,000 People a Year Each year, about 1,000 people submit nominations for the prize, many duplicating each other. Self-nominations are immediately disqualified. The exclusive list of those allowed to submit nominations includes: previous Nobel laureates; members of the Nobel Prize-awarding institutions; scholars working in physics, chemistry, or medicine; and officials and members of various universities.
