    Winston Churchill Churchill, Sir Winston Leonard Spencer (1874-1965), British statesman, best known for his courageous leadership as prime minister during World War II (1939-1945). In 1900 Churchill was elected to Parliament. He later served as president of the Board of Trade, as home secretary, and as first lord of the admiralty. During World War I (1914-1918), naval problems and his support of the disastrous Gallipoli campaign forced his resignation from the admiralty. From 1917 to 1922 he filled several important positions, including minister of munitions and secretary for war. From 1924 to 1929 he was chancellor of the Exchequer. As such he returned Britain to the gold standard and condemned the trade unions during the general strike of 1926. Churchill succeeded Neville Chamberlain as prime minister in 1940. During the beginning of World War II, his pugnacity and rousing speeches rallied the British to continue the fight. He secured military aid and moral support from the United States, and after the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) and the United States entered the war in 1941, Churchill established close ties with American president Franklin D. Roosevelt and Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. Churchill also helped shape the map of postwar Europe. Despite his international reputation, he was defeated in the election of 1945. He was prime minister again from 1951 to 1955, but age and poor health prevented him from providing dynamic leadership. Churchill was also an able historian. His most famous works include A History of the English-Speaking Peoples (4 volumes, 1956-1958). He received the Nobel Prize for literature in 1953.

We shall fight on the beaches ... by Winston Churchill on June 4, 1940 at the WSC House of Commons I have myself full confidence that if all do their duty, if nothing is neglected, and if the best arrangements are made, as they are being made, we shall prove ourselves once again able to defend our island home, to ride out the storm of war, and to outlive the menace of tyranny, if necessary for years if necessary alone. At any rate, that is what we are going to try to do. That is the resolve of His Majesty's Government, every man of them. That is the will of Parliament and the nation. The British Empire and the French Republic, linked together in their cause and in their need, will defend to the death their native soil, aiding each other like good comrades to the utmost of their strength. Even though large tracts of Europe and many old and famous States have fallen or may fall into the grip of the Gestapo and all the odious apparatus of Nazi rule, we shall not flag or fail. We shall go on to the end;

Come potete controllare voi stessi.

d-Jan.24, 1965, London Winston Churchill, son of Lord Randolph Churchill, first came to public attention as a result of his escape from a prison in Pretoria during the Boer War. He was a war correspondent and had been captured. His political career began in 1900 with his election to Parliament as a Conservative. He joined the Liberals over tariff reform proposed by Chamberlain. In 1908 he was appointed president of the Board of Trade by Asquith and was home secretary in 1910. He was in the Commons until 1923 and a number of ministerial offices including First Lord of the Admiralty in the Asquith government (1911-15). He served in the trenches of World War I in France in 1915-16, returning to Parliament in 1917 to serve as minister of munitions under Lloyd George at the time the tank was being developed. After the war ended he served as secretary for war (1918-21). He was colonial secretary and was a major player in establishing the Irish Free State. Out of Parliament from 1922-24, Churchill returned as a Conservative representing Epping in 1924 and was made chancellor of the Exchequer (1924-29) under Baldwin. While chancellor he returned Britain to the gold standard and was noticed for his part in breaking the General Strike of 1926. He was again out of office (1929-39) but was a vocal critic of Conservative policy on India and especially Chamberlain's appeasement of Hitler and Mussolini.

Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
from 1940-1945 and 1951-1955 Sir Winston Churchill was born in Blenheim Palace in Oxfordshire, England on 30 November 1874. He was born into a family of statesmen that had been politically active since the 17th century. His childhood interest in the military led him to enroll in the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. After graduating with honors, in 1895 Churchill was promoted to second Lieutenant in the British Army and traveled around the world from Cuba to India. Churchill resigned from the military in 1899 to pursue a career in politics and journalism, as he had demonstrated talent in speaking and writing during his military service. During the last few months of World War II, Churchill became aware of the US plans to use an atomic bomb. He gave US President Harry Truman his approval in "principle" to drop the bomb on Japan before it had been successfully tested. On 26 July 1945, during the Potsdam Conference, Truman, Churchill, and Joseph Stalin of the Soviet Union issued an ultimatum to Japan. The Potsdam Declaration called on Japan to surrender unconditionally or suffer "prompt and utter destruction."

World War II
Out of office from 1929 to 1939, Churchill wrote and remained in the public eye with his support for Edward VIII in the abdication crisis of 1936 and with his vehement opposition to the Indian nationalist movement. He also issued unheeded warnings of the threat from Nazi Germany. When World War II broke out (Sept., 1939), Neville Chamberlain appointed him first lord of the admiralty. The following May, when Chamberlain was forced to resign, Churchill became prime minister. He was one of the truly great orators; his energy and his stubborn refusal to make peace until Adolf Hitler was crushed were crucial in rallying and maintaining British resistance to Germany during the grim years from 1940 to 1942. He met President Franklin Roosevelt at sea (see Atlantic Charter ) before the entry of the United States into the war, twice addressed the U.S. Congress (Dec., 1941; May, 1942), twice went to Moscow (Aug., 1942; May, 1944), visited battle fronts, and attended a long series of international conferences (see

Biography of Sir Winston Leonard Spencer Churchill
"You ask what is our policy? I say it is to wage war by land, sea and air. War with all our might and with all the strength God has given us and to wage war against a monstrous tyranny never surpassed in the dark and lamentable catalogue of human crime." Winston S. Churchill, in a speech to the British people, 1940. British statesman (1874-1965), World War II prime minister, noted orator, soldier and Nobel Prize winning author. Born on Nov. 30, 1874 at his family's ancestral home, Bleinheim Palace, to one of the most prominent families in the British history, Winston Churchill would grow up to become of the most important figures of the 20th century leading Great Britain during the darkest day of World War II where, as President John F. Kennedy once noted, he used the English language as a powerful weapon of war. Indeed, his use of the language in speeches, remarks and writings has made him one of the most quotable persons in history. His father was Lord Randolph Churchill, the second son of the Duke of Marlborough, while his mother was Jenny Jerome, the daughter of a wealthy American family. Short and red-haired and raised by a nanny until sent away to boarding school, Churchill was educated at Harrow and the Royal Military College at Sandhurst. In 1894, he was commissioned an officer in the 4th Hussars. Taking leave in 1895, Churchill paid the first of many visits to his mother's homeland, the United States, and saw his first action in Cuba as a war correspondent for the London Daily Graphic. He later served on the northern frontier in India and in 1898 fought at the decisive battle against the Dervish at Omdurman under Lord Kitchner where he participated in the last major cavalry charge of the British Army.
