A jurist, humanitarian, and internationalist, (October 5, 1887- ) is one of the world's foremost proponents of the legal as well as the moral recognition of the rights of man. Neither a pessimist nor an optimist, the peace laureate, eighty-one years old when awarded the prize in 1968, confessed that "men are not always good" but he has based much of his life's work on the premise that human responses can be constructive if states will transform the conditions that breed ill will into those that recognize the dignity of man.
Cassin has made his career in law as practitioner, professor, scholar, administrator, and promoter. The legal career which he began in 1909 in Paris, where he was a counsel at the Court of Paris, was brought to an end when he was inducted into the infantry in 1914. Severely wounded in 1916 by German shrapnel, he survived, but only because his mother, serving as a nurse in the field hospital to which he had been carried, persuaded the doctors to perform surgery. Although the injury he sustained was to give him acute discomfort throughout his life, he recovered, married Simone Yzombard of Marseilles, and entered upon his career as a professor of law at Aix late in 1916.
He moved to a professorship in law at Lille in 1920 and in 1929 to the chair of fiscal and civil law at the University of Paris, where he remained until his retirement from formal teaching in 1960. His teaching career included various scholarly assignments that took him to other countries. He lectured at the National School of Overseas Territories; undertook academic missions in Europe, French Africa, the Middle East, and the Far East; lectured at the Academy of International Law at The Hague, and at the

Presentation Speech by Mrs. Aase Lionaes , Chairman of the Nobel Committee , Norwegian Storting The last time the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to an individual was in 1964. The prize for that year was given to Martin Luther King . Today he is no longer alive. On April 4 of this year, so bitter a year for human rights, he fell at his post as leader of the Negroes' nonviolent struggle for their rights. His death was one of the most grievous losses ever suffered by the world's champions of peace and goodwill.
The Nobel Committee of the Norwegian Parliament gratefully remembers Martin Luther King and invokes peace for his memory.
On November 27, 1895, in the Swedish Club of Paris, Alfred Nobel signed his testament which later became so famous. This was almost exactly one year before his death on December 10, 1896, at San Remo in Italy.
As is well known, Nobel decided that the income from his fortune should be divided into five equal parts and given as prizes to those who had made the greatest contributions to mankind. There is one sentence in this very short testament of his which makes us think of this year's Peace Prize laureate, Professor Réne Cassin. That sentence is: "It is my express wish that in awarding the prizes no consideration whatever shall be given to the nationality of the candidates, so that the most worthy shall receive the prize, whether he be a Scandinavian or not."

Réne Cassin
Réne Cassin of France was one of the most influential members of the Commission on Human Rights. Having been a professor of civil law at the University of Paris, Cassin was an expert in international law with an impassioned concern for human rights. For these reasons, the delegates to the Commission on Human Rights selected Cassin to compose the first full draft of the Universal Declaration. This early draft would contain most of the rights and much of the language that would later be set forth in the final document. Réne Cassin spent his life defending the rights of men, women, and children. His dedication to bettering the lives of others and his contribution to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights were eventually recognized with a Nobel Peace Prize. As he worked to bring former enemies together around a common cause, so too he advocated human rights that must be enjoyed by all, regardless of nationality, culture, or religion. Cassin was one of the first diplomats of international prominence to voice concern for universal human rights. He also championed the cause of unilateral disarmament in the hope of preventing any future armed conflicts. By the 1920’s, his commitment to peace and human rights was famous throughout France, where he was lauded as "The Father of France’s Orphans." In 1924 Cassin was appointed to the French Delegation to the League of Nations.

Speech to the Decalogue Lawyers Society Rene Cassin Mr. President, May I first convey to you and to the members of the Decalogue Lawyers Society my gratitude for your kind invitation which was relayed to me in Paris by my friend Wourgast of the World Federation of War Veterans. My friends and comrades in the struggle for the rights of man, - humanity, though fragmented into tribes and other social groups at first and later formed into nations and empires, was conscious from its darkest and earliest beginnings of a brotherhood founded on religious and moral concepts rather than on material and economic interests. The Decalogue is one of the earliest formally recorded expressions of this community of principles. It was formulated, however as a series of imperative precepts: "Ye shall be holy, for I the Lord your God am holy. Honor thy father and thy mother. Keep the sabbath day." Or else in the form of interdictions: "Thou shalt not steal, thou shalt not kill, thou shalt not take the name of the Lord in vain." But never was it meant to appear as a proclamation of human rights or prerogatives. For thousands of years the religious organization of society made itself felt as an authoritarian concept – even when altruistic precepts were involved: The Bible reads "thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself."

III. Alfred Nobel And The Nobel Prizes Alfred Nobel is the man who invented dynamite. He is better known today, however, as the man who established some of the most prestigious prizes in the world. Born in 1833 in Stockholm, Sweden, Nobel from his youth had a dream of inventing an explosive so devastating it would deter humans from making war. Instead, his invention made war easier. Though he was a Swede by birth, he was very much an international man, being educated in St. Petersburg, Russia, where his family moved when he was a child. In St. Petersburg, he studied with private tutors, particularly showing interest in chemistry and languages. He mastered Swedish, Russian, English, French, and German. At the age of 17 he began two years of educational travel throughout Germany, France, Italy and to the United States. Then at the age of 19 he became a chemist, working with his father in St. Petersburg. The family returned to Sweden and in 1863 he was a chemist in his father's explosives factory at Heleneborg near Stockholm. In 1864 Nobel received a patent covering detonating charges and percussion caps. Called "The Nobel Igniter," it was to be called at a later time "the greatest discovery ever made in both the principle and practice of explosives." His 1866 invention of dynamite revolutionized mining, road building and tunnel blasting. In 1875 a later improvement was patented as blasting gelatine. In 1887 he patented ballistite, the first of the nitroglycerine smokeless powders. This was to serve as the basis for cordite which was eventually to change the use of firearms.
