Vacation Stories
Five Science Fiction Tales
Translated and introduced by Laura Otis Introduction
In 1905, a collection of five Vacation Stories appeared. Its author called himself "Dr. Bacteria." Dealing with scientific ethics, biological warfare, and the social responsibilities of scientists, the Vacation Stories Originally, there were twelve Vacation Stories. Cajal wrote them early in his career, but he waited nearly twenty years to publish them. According to Cajal, the stories were unoriginal and stylistically defective. More probably, he feared that these "anti-religious, anti-establishment" tales would jeopardize his scientific funding (O'Connor 100). Cajal waited to publish them until his scientific reputation was well established, and he never circulated them generally, showing them only to trusted friends. If these are the five stories he chose to publish, we can only wonder what the other seven were like. Sadly, we will never know, since they were lost in Madrid during the Spanish Civil War (Tzitsikas 29). Cajal as Scientist Cajal won his Nobel Prize for showing that neurons were independent cells, disproving the prevailing hypothesis that they formed a physically continuous net. He shared it with Italian anatomist Camillo Golgi, who favored the nerve net idea but whose staining techniques allowed Cajal to see individual cells. Cajal's vision of dynamic, freely branching neurons gave rise to our current understanding of the nervous system. His beautiful, intricate drawings of neurons are so strikingand so accuratethat they are still used in neuroscience textbooks today.

Biography: Santiago Ramón y Cajal
Nobel Laureate (Medicine, 1906) Santiago Ramón y Cajal was born on March 1, 1852, at Petilla in Aragon, Spain. As a boy he was apprenticed first to a barber and then to a cobbler. He himself wished to be an artist - his gift for draftsmanship is evident in his published works. His father, however, who was Professor of Applied Anatomy in the University of Zaragoza, persuaded him to study medicine, which he did, chiefly under the direction of his father. (Later, he made drawings for an atlas of anatomy which his father was preparing, but which was never published.) In 1873 he took his Licentiate in Medicine at Zaragoza and served, after a competitive examination, as an army doctor. He took part in an expedition to Cuba in 1874-75, where he contracted malaria and tuberculosis. On his return he became an assistant in the School of Anatomy in the Faculty of Medicine at Zaragoza (1875) and then, at his own request, Director of the Zaragoza Museum (1879). On December 6, 1883 he obtained the degree of Doctor of Medicine at Madrid, after having been the day before unanimously nominated Professor of Descriptive and General Anatomy at Valencia. In 1887, after an examination, he was nominated Professor of Histology and Pathological Anatomy at Barcelona and in 1892 he was appointed to the same Chair at Madrid. In 1902 he was appointed Director of the "Investigaciones Biológica" and of the "Instituto Nacional de Higiene."

Santiago Ramon y Cajal contributed by Aundie Bishop Santiago Ramon y Cajal was best known for insisting that neurons were not joined as a continuous network but rather conducted their signals over long distances and gaps in one direction. His idea that the neuron is a discrete entity serving as the anatomical, physiological, genetic, and metabolic unit of the nervous system became known as the “Neuron Doctrine,” which is thought of as the most basic principle of neuroscience. He provided future scientists with a framework of nervous structure. Ramon y Cajal, born in Aragon, Spain, was the son of an anatomy professor who pushed him to study medicine although he had a passion for art. He first worked as an army doctor, but later served on the faculty at medical schools in Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia. During his time as a professor and researcher, Ramon y Cajal published over 100 articles in French, Spanish, and German scientific periodicals in the areas of Histology, Pathology, Anatomy, and the Neuoscience. He achieved international renown and lectured extensively throughout Europe.

    RASSEGNA STAMPA

The following is from the book Emil Seletz, Sculptor Dr. Cyril B. Courville, the author of the short biography of Cajal in Webb Haymakers's Founders of Neurology (Charles B. Thomas, publisher), introduced me to the greatness of Cajal. Cajal, Professor of Anatomy at the University of Zaragoza and later at Valencia, was probably the greatest neurohistopathologist of all times. The author of many books, he was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1906 for his work on special tissue staining. Dr. Courville - anatomist, neurologist and neuropathologist (and author of several books) had many traits of Cajal. He was very artistic. Many of his drawings of histopathology are contained in his original contributions in his studies of micropathology of brain injuries in his writings, and in his textbook on neuropathology attest to the exactness and beauty of his work. Dr. Courville was at one time President of the American Association of Neuropathology. I made the original portrait bust of Cajal for Dr. Courville from many photographs of Cajal that Dr. Courville obtained for me.
